VPOD: Vintage 1960s Ruffle Tier Prom Party Dress

Vintage 1950s ruffle tier prom party dress

In one scene from Sex and the City 2, Samantha and Miley Cyrus both arrive at a Red Carpet event wearing the same dress. Fashion disaster, right?

I mean, a dress would have to be super-extraordinary to transcend the decades (and years of gravity!) that stand between a teenager and a woman in her fifties. And this particular dress, cut up to here and down to there, fell far short of that super-extraordinariness.

Let’s face it. Some dresses are just Young. Fresh. Youthful. They’re made to be worn during that time of innocence before life jades a girl with all its hard knocks.

And call me be old-fashioned, but after staring with horror at the prom dresses that Google showed me recently, my advice to the tens of thousands of gals shopping for prom dresses this year is this:

Go ahead and be a girl! There’s plenty of time to be a woman in the years ahead.

The designers of yesteryear, of course, understood this. I dare you to find a 1950s or 1960s prom dress cut up to here or down to there!  Which is not to say that these dresses didn’t show some skin. Or couldn’t make a girl feel glamorous. But they also weren’t designed to be appropriate for the Hollywood starlets of the era who were long out of high school.

Now I’m not suggesting that every girl don something frilly (or “flurry” as my daughter used to say). But for gal who appreciates nostalgia, likes pretty, feminine things, and isn’t afraid to take her time growing up, then traditional vintage can truly be her friend.

Take today’s VPOD for instance.

This 1960s prom dress in baby pink is oh-so-pretty and a refreshing option for a gal who wants to convey the message of pretty princess and not sexy siren.

It’s a beautiful age-appropriate find for a teenage vintage fashionista!

And any budding brides can follow her lead with today’s VPOD.

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Pink Slip

vintage 1950s slip 2

These days a lot of Americans are afraid of receiving a pink slip but not vintage fashionistas!

Now I know that not every woman embraces vintage into her wardrobe. Some people are very turned off by the idea of wearing old or used clothing. So I always consider it a victory when someone is able to open their minds and exercise their fashion muscles. And like so many things in life, it all starts with baby steps.

Maybe someone inherited a piece of jewelry that they start wearing and enjoy. Or a good friend gives them a vintage silk scarf as a gift. Next thing you know, they start looking at old and used clothing a little differently and start thinking, “Why not?” instead of “Why would you?”

And vintage lingerie is another fine way for these vintage virgins to dip their toes into the vintage fashion waters. With vintage lingerie, you can wear vintage on the inside until you’re brave enough to wear vintage on the outside! And there is still plenty of new old stock left on the market which means you can actually wear a “new” item that is several decades old.

Today’s VPOD is a beautiful example that dates from the 1950s. And you have to admit that sleeping in a lovely little slip like this with lace, piping and satin straps feels much more feminine that an old concert tee.

It’s a gorgeous, grown-up find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Tulle and Lace Prom Gown

Vintage 1950s Pink Lace and Tulle Prom Gown

Vintage 1950s Pink Lace and Tulle Prom Gown 2

May is here and that means lots of young American girls are preparing for that high school rite of passage known as Prom. Just today, the New York Post reported on this year’s most popular fashion trend for this big event:

Prom is going porn this year.

The days of dressing like a lady are over — with teens preferring to parade around at their first big dance looking more like strippers than schoolgirls.

The hot trend is slutty chic — with cleavage-revealing frocks, bellybutton-baring gowns and dresses made of barely enough fabric to make a washcloth.

What?!? Does this upset anyone besides me?

The article goes on to report that one of Saks best-selling dresses this season is a little (and I do mean little) leopard number with a bare-midriff that looks like something a belly-dancer would wear. What?!?

Do these gals realize that their clothing choices send a message? Have they asked themselves what that message might be? (And if they haven’t, where are their moms or aunts or older sisters to help advise them?)

And as if this isn’t bad enough, don’t get me started on what’s happening to our littlest young ladies. Where I might have played dress-up as a little girl and worn high heels for play, three-year-old Suri Cruise has been photographed wearing silver peep-toe heels made for children out on the town.

So today I want to take a moment to encourage our young women to stay true to themselves and dress in what makes them feel pretty, confident and vibrant not because it’s what everyone else is wearing, but because it’s what they consciously choose to wear. Because they understand that whatever dress they choose for prom will reflect their personal values. Because wearing clothes that draw attention for attention’s sake won’t make you feel good about you. Because dressing for any event shouldn’t be about making an impression but rather about making an expression of your authentic inner self.

Yes, there is plenty of societal pressure for teens to bare as much as possible as soon as possible because that’s what they see teen celebrities doing. But certainly not every young lady wants to attend prom looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman before her makeover.

So for the few willing to be brave enough to refuse the skin-tight, down-to-there and up-to-here dresses on the market and willing to instead choose a conservative, feminine and oh-so-pretty gown, I present today’s VPOD.

This 1950s lace and tulle gown by Harry Keiser can easily be worn off the shoulders to bare some skin but with a message that says “I’m a lady” instead of “I’m a lady of the evening.”

It’s a beautiful age-appropriate choice for a young vintage fashionista!
