VPOD: Vintage 1960s Lederer Alligator Handbag

vintage lederer alligator handbag

What’s living at the bottom of YOUR handbag?

Today’s LA Times reports that a Georgia woman recently decided to clean out her purse and discovered an old lottery ticket worth $189,302 hiding out down there!

And while I can’t promise that cleaning out your own handbag would be as exciting as this, I can promise that taking five minutes today to remove all the old receipts, gum wrappers, and other detritus will give you a small sense of accomplishment and a big boost of organization.

In fact, it just might motivate you to hit the trunk of your car, the pantry and yes, even your closet, as it kicks off a Spring Cleaning frenzy.

Of course, it’s a lot easier to keep clutter under control when you limit the size of your bag from the get-go. So take a look at today’s VPOD.

What this vintage 1960s alligator handbag by Lederer lacks in size it makes up with a huge boost of classic style.

It’s a winning find all its own for a vintage fashionista!

Did you notice at the Fall 2011 Louis Vuitton fashion show that some models paraded down the runway in handcuffs while holding on for dear life to their structured handbags?

In an article at Vogue.com, the body language expert Lillian Glass, Ph.D. explains that this showed self-confidence, self-assurance and made a statement that they had nothing to hide.

She also explains the meaning behind the way the Celine models held their bags like “too-heavy sacks of groceries” and explains just what Prada models’ cozy holds on their bags were attempting to say.

Now whether you think there’s a deep psychological meaning to how you hold your handbag or you think this is all a bunch of baloney, there’s no doubt that any woman who carries a vintage handbag is definitely making a statement.

For instance, take today’s VPOD.

Whether you choose to hold this vintage patent leather and gold handbag behind your back a la the Louis Vuitton girls sans handcuffs or at your side in a more traditional manner, you are definitely telling the world that you prefer to listen to that still silent fashion voice inside of you instead of the loud one blasted from megaphones by the fashion industry.

That makes this bag a very expressive find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD HI/LO: Vintage Handbags

Not every gal — or every outfit! — cries out for an oversize handbag. Sometimes a more demure, more ladylike choice is just what the fashion doctor ordered.

So take a look at today’s prescriptions in another HI/LO feature.

Today’s VPOD features both a lizard and a crocodile handbag.

One of these beauties is the genuine thing with a somewhat higher price tag but the other is an oh-so-very-affordable vinyl version.

Can you guess which is HI and which is LO?

They’re both classic finds for vintage fashionistas!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Satchel Bag and Packing Light

vintage 1970s satchel bag

Today I will achieve the impossible.

I leave for a 10-day trip to visit my family in Pennsylvania and I’ll pack only a carry-on suitcase that fits in the overhead compartment and a tote bag.

I know, I know — it’s gonna be a challenge. But since I’m visiting family I can skimp on my toiletries and I have no red-carpet events on the calendar, just casual evenings with friends.

Considering my daughter was one of eight random travelers who got bumped from her international flight to Calgary on Sunday because the plane was overweight(!), I’m determined to assist my fellow passengers by traveling light.

The tricks? Strict editing. Lightweight fabrics. Planning. Rolling, not folding. And remembering my deep dislike for waiting around at luggage carousels!

Of course, having the perfect tote bag is also super-important and today’s VPOD would fit the bill perfectly.

This vintage 1970s bag from a French flea market is made of synthetic leather and is the perfect size to fit my trusty Mac laptop, headphones, wallet, iPhone, lip balm, moisturizer, and healthy snack.

It’s a very bon voyage find for a vintage fashionista!

P.S. I’m taking the red eye so there will be no VPOD tomorrow.  The VPOD will return on Friday.

vintage 1980s judith leiber minaudiere bag

Judith Leiber was the first woman to win a Coty Award and the first person ever to receive the award for a handbag.

Her handbags have been carried by many first ladies including Pat Nixon, Hilary Clinton, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush.

And while many women collect her gorgeous handbags, perhaps one of the most prolific collectors is Judith Leiber herself. To date, she’s collected about 900 of her bags and has over 200 on display at the East Hampton, NY museum that she founded with her husband in 2005.

To learn more about this talented and fascinating woman, be sure to read the compelling interview with Judith Leiber at Collectors Weekly.

Then, if you’re ready to add a Judith Leiber original to your collection, take a peek at today’s VPOD. This vintage 1980s crystal studded minaudiere is lined in gold leather and features a green cabochon emerald.

It’s a magnificent example of Leiber’s purse perfection for a vintage fashionista!
