VPOD: Protecting Your Assets and Vintage 1970s Earrings

Sure it can be hard to keep a secret, but our computer passwords are secrets worth keeping.

When I used to audit companies back in the day, I was always surprised to see how many people kept their passwords posted at their desks or taped inside their top drawers or written on index cards that were tucked underneath their desk blotters.

I always thought these folks were playing with fire and I swore I would NEVER make that mistake. Still, in the last year, I’ve been the victim of cyber-crime not once, but twice.

First, imagine my surprise when I was showing my parents Zuburbia.com for the first time and discovered that every catalog page was displaying Google Ads! Some enterprising crook had somehow hacked in to my site and placed very unattractive Google ads on all the e-commerce pages so he could pocket pennies and dimes from the clickthroughs.

Then a few months ago my server company contacted me because I was exceeding my file capacity. A little investigation quickly revealed that all those files didn’t belong to me. They belonged to some other company who had hacked in and parked them on my server thinking I wouldn’t notice.

As you can imagine, I’ve since become much more savvy about my computer passwords.

Here are a few tricky tips I’ve implemented to create more secure passwords that you might also find helpful:

* Since you shouldn’t use personal information or easily obtained data for your passwords (like names of family members, pets, license plate numbers, etc.) try using a mnemonic itstead. The password Mhall is easy to remember since it’s the first letter of each word in the phrase Mary had a little lamb.

* To make your password even more secure, be sure to include a few capital letters so Mhall becomes MhAlL.

* Then, since this password is still too short for some sites, tack on a numerical extension or integrate numbers within the password itself. MhAlL could become 8MhAlL4 or MhAlL84.

* Since you should change your passwords frequently but NOT write them down, it’s helpful to use a consistent naming convention. For instance, next month I might change my password to FfOsRtS84 or 8FfOsRtS4 (for Fashion fades only style remains the same).

Of course, we don’t just need to protect our internet assets like unauthorized access to our Facebook pages or online checking accounts.

Remember I told you recently about my neighbors’ break-in on January 30?

Well they were dismayed to discover that the wedding ring that was stolen wouldn’t be covered by their insurance because it exceeded the $1,000 limit for jewelry on their Renters Policy.

Should you be the lucky recipient of a glitzy Valentine’s Day gift like today’s VPOD, a pair of gorgeous ruby and seed pearl dangle earrings from the 1970s, be sure to thank the gift-giver and then call your insurance agent pronto to make sure they’ll be protected from loss or theft.

These are just smart moves to protect the assets of Vintage Crusaders!

VPOD: Vintage Dangle Earrings and The Lipstick Index

vintage dangle earrings

Time magazine reported on something called The Lipstick Index last week.

The term was coined over a decade ago by Leonard Lauder, then-chairman of Estee Lauder. He used The Lipstick Index to refer to the fact that when times get tough, shoppers may stop buying non-essentials but they’ll still spend money on little luxuries. Like lipstick.

During the last recession in 2001, for example, the overall economy declined but lipstick sales soared. And it’s happening again.

Time magazine reports that lipsticks sales are up 14% this year, and nail polish, the latest bellweather product, has seen sales rise an astonishing 54%!

But if you’re in the mood for an inexpensive style pick-me-up you don’t have to limit yourself to the cosmetics aisle. There are plenty of budget-friendly vintage belts, scarves and jewelry choices, too.

Take today’s VPOD, for example.

These bold little vintage clip danglers will only set you back $15—about the cost of one Estee Lauder lipstick or two lipsticks of the drugstore variety.

They’re fun recession finds for a Vintage Crusader!

Available at Decatique Studios.

VPOD: Vintage Filigree Art Glass Duster Earrings and Being Cool

vintage art glass filigree duster earrings

We’ve often heard about retailers and brands offering celebrities money to wear their clothes and use their products. In fact, we’ve also heard the scuttlebutt when these same brand ambassadors are caught out in public sipping a rival brand’s beverage or wearing a rival brand’s pair of jeans.

But now, this celebrity branding has taken an interesting new twist.

It seems that the teen chain Abercrombie & Fitch has offered Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, reality star of Jersey Shore, a substantial payment to STOP wearing the brand’s clothes.

It seems “The Situation” is not “brand-appropriate,” according to David Cupps, senior counsel for Abercrombie & Fitch.

But here’s the thing (and I wish I could get this point across to all the school kids filled with angst because their parents can’t afford to buy them the hottest pair of sneakers or jeans this fall):

Wearing a label doesn’t make you cool!

Didn’t Abercrombie just prove that by offering to pay off The Situation?

If the act of wearing an Abercrombie label made you cool, the company wouldn’t have a problem with him sporting their clothes, right?

Instead they’re really saying here’s a guy who isn’t cool, who doesn’t embody what we think of as cool and we don’t want him in our club. Let’s pay him to go away.

Enough already!

What makes you cool or uncool isn’t someone else declaring you cool or uncool or wearing a brand that the culture has declared cool or uncool.

Cool is what happens when you own your own power.

When you aren’t afraid to proclaim YOU to the world.

When you don’t hide behind your beauty or your intelligence or your quirkiness or your creativity but when you embrace it and amplify it so it can’t help but glow brightly for those around you to see.

Cool ISN’T embracing someone else’s idea of cool and it’s definitely not embracing some brand’s idea of cool or some celebrity’s idea of cool.

That’s just imitation.

And while imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, it’s also an easy way to cheat the hard work of discovering who YOU are and the uniqueness that only you can bring to the table.

I think of people who rely solely on brands to help define their style and identity as Label Snobs.

They think because they’re wearing a label that it somehow makes them better or cooler than the folks who aren’t.

And you know what? The other insecure people of the world will agree with them.

But the rest of us know better.

We’re not opposed to labels. We love a beautifully crafted designer piece as much as the next gal. But, here’s the difference:

We don’t buy something simply because of its label.

We make our purchases based on more important personal criteria that include:

* Do I love it?
* Is it well crafted?
* Does it fit my style statement?
* Is it in my budget?
* Can I see myself wearing it multiple times in multiple ways?
* Does the manufacture and the production of the item align with my values?

And today’s VPOD fits the bill.

Maybe these fine vintage filigree art glass duster earrings aren’t marked Haskell or YSL but they’re still fabulous finds for a cool Vintage Crusader!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Bakelite Enamel Necklace

Vintage Bakelite Enamel Figurals Egyptian Necklace

vintage bakelite enamel egyptian necklace

She was Hollywood royalty and a glamour icon both on and off the screen. And now we mourn Elizabeth Taylor, the lovely lady with the legendary lavender eyes.

As pointed out in the LA Times tribute to her extraordinary life, Elizabeth Taylor loved to eat, she loved men and she loved jewels. But perhaps her greatest achievement was her tireless work related to AIDS. Back in 1985, when AIDS was still mostly being talked about in whispers, she chaired the first major AIDS fundraiser and went on to co-found the first national organization devoted to AIDS research.

So while her six-decade career in entertainment will leave behind film performances to be enjoyed by millions, the $270 million that her efforts have raised for AIDS prevention and care leave behind an even greater legacy.

Today’s VPOD pays tribute to Elizabeth Taylor for one of her most well-known performances as Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile.

This vintage Bakelite and enamel necklace and earring set feature images of both Cleopatra and Caesar as well as helmets and horse heads.

It’s a fine find for any Elizabeth Taylor fan who is also a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Jean Muir Tweed and Leather Dress

vintage jean muir tweed and leather dress vintage jean muir tweed and leather dress 2

Have you ever slipped on a dress in a changing room while you were out shopping and immediately known, even before looking at yourself in a mirror, that you had found The One?

It’s amazing how sometimes the energy of a dress just matches your energy perfectly. How it hugs your body like a glove. How it hits in all the right places. How it makes you feel almost as comfortable as you do in your own skin.

If you love this feeling, then I encourage you to explore the fashion world of Jean Muir.

This British designer died in 1995 but she left behind a wonderful collection of vintage dresses known for their simple, flattering, feminine shapes. And perhaps that’s because Jean Muir herself made sure to slip into each one during her fittings. She insisted this was the only way to feel if there was something wrong in the design. And this attention to detail, and this dedication to the comfort of women everywhere, is worth celebrating.

Today’s VPOD features a yummy vintage tweed Jean Muir dress with leather trim and leather belt. Buttons down the back and concealed side pockets add extra charm.

It’s a delightful and classic Muir find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Katy Kane.
