VPOD: Polka Dot Power for Storage Boxes and a Vintage 1960s Polka Dot Dress

I’m not the biggest fan of polka dots in fashion. For me personally, I tend to find them a bit, well, polka-dotty! And the older you get the harder it becomes to pull off this whimsical print.

But don’tcha just love a challenge?

Me, too!

So with a wee bit of internet surfing, I discovered today’s VPOD. This lovely summer dress mixes dotted swiss with a bold geometric print for a combo that’s not too sweet, not too flashy, but just right.

Of course, there are other simple ways to add a few extra servings of polka dots into your fashion diet.

If you can’t bear the thought of wearing the print from from head-to-toe, try sporting a polka dot scarf for the day, grip a polka dot clutch or grab a fun piece of jewelry that will have’em seeing spots.

And don’t forget about your humble abode which might also benefit from the quick style boost a few polka dots can bring. One dotted pillow, lamp or throw may be all you need to bring a smile to your face.

Plus I love this idea for making the boring, ho-hum job of storing year-end documents a little more fun. Head down to your office supply store and pick up a packet of colorful round price stickers to brighten up those plain ol’ cardboard document boxes. Who says filing can’t be fun?!

This is the power of polka dots for Vintage Crusaders.

Dress available at Great Lake Outfitters.

VPOD: Exclamation Points, Joy and A Punctuated Vintage Dress

vintage 1950s exclamation point dress

vintage 1950s exclamation point dress 2

When it comes to punctuation marks, exclamation points are definitely my favorite.

I mean, commas and periods don’t strike me as particularly special. They’re just utilitarian and necessary.

Semi-colons and colons often leave me befuddled.

And while I do deliberately use a lot of question marks (which definitely come in a strong second), I still hope that when the tally is taken upon my final breath that I will have lived a life with far more exclamation points than the average gal.

Now all of us use punctuation marks as we’re creating and living our life stories, but most people limit exclamation points to the Big Moments: graduations, weddings, births, dream jobs, dream houses, long sought-after awards.

Somehow, though, I’ll bet that the guys and gals who go through life with the biggest smiles on their faces are the ones who have figured out how to add exclamation points to all their not-so-special days, too.

I mean, there’s a huge difference between

Off to work.

and

Off to work!

And while you might envy actors who are able to recite lines that have punctuation marks added in all the appropriate spots, don’t you prefer being able to PLACE THE EXCLAMATION POINTS IN YOUR OWN LIFE STORY WHEREVER YOU PLEASE?

One theory suggests that the origin of the exclamation point comes from the Latin word for joy, IO, and that the exclamation point was born when someone wrote the “O” underneath the “I”.

So just think of every exclamation point that you can add to your life story as adding an extra helping of joy.

You can think

Time to do the laundry.

or

Time(!) to do the laundry.

or

Time to do the laundry!

It’s really up to you.

Of course, you can also add quite a few exclamation points quite easily with today’s VPOD, an amazing 1950s dress that is punctuated all over with these joyous symbols.

It’s a fabulous style exclamation for a Vintage Crusader!

VPOD: A Clean Slate and A Simple Vintage Dress

Personal Project Resolution by Jessica Patterson

vintage khaki dress

One of the great pleasures of the New Year for me is cracking open a fresh journal and flipping through the blank pages while imagining the stories, adventures, and yes, even the potential trials and tribulations, that I’ll be committing to ink in the days ahead.

Before our digital age, the watch keeper on ships would keep a slate tablet near the helm on which he recorded speeds, distances and headings on the voyage. If there were no problems, when the shifts changed, the new watch keeper would simply “wipe the slate clean” and start recording all over again.

For me, my new journal every year is a clean slate just waiting for the next chapter in my story to be written.

And since I believe that we are all co-writing the script that is our lives, I believe it’s important to spend some time thinking — and dreaming — about the stories we’d like our pages to contain.

Equally important, though, as I discovered during a coaching call last week, is deciding what to put to rest now that 2011 is past. To what and to whom have you been directing your energy and attention that no longer needs, warrants or deserves your energy moving forward?

Hmmm…I’ll let you stew on that one for a moment…

Completing this introspective process of examining and dreaming is just Step One of the Clean Slate Process that a New Year brings.

The vital step, Step Two, is to actually commit your resolutions, goals, priorities, or whatever you want to call them, to paper. Write’em down ladies and you stand a much greater chance of seeing’em happen!

This poster by Jessica Patterson gives you plenty of space to do just that and it also offers a helpful reminder in its small print:

Mistakes are important sometimes, and part of this “resolution,” by nature, includes learning from and improving upon lackluster efforts and failures (should they happen to happen).

You see, the good news is that you don’t have to wait for January 1 every year to start with a Clean Slate. If you find you’ve fallen off the Resolution Wagon in March, just dust yourself off and hop back on!

Every day of your life dawns fresh and new with the opportunity to always improve upon yesterday.

Every day you exercise your creative freedom to make the same or different choices.

Every day you choose to engage in habits and activities that support and enrich you or you choose to engage in habits and activities that don’t.

Every day you interact with people who lift you up or you interact with people who bring you down.

So if you’re gonna build up one muscle this year to really change your life, forget about your triceps or quads and focus all your concentration and effort on strenghtening your Choice muscle. It will have the greatest effect in every area of your life including health, relationships, business and even style.

And should you be interested in a Clean Slate for your closet, simply let go of all the dazzle, glitz and glam for a while and step back to a more organic, pure palette like the one offered by today’s VPOD, a simple khaki cotton dress.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Halter Dress and Rethinking Leftovers

vintage 1970s halter dress

Leftovers again?!

I clearly remember how my sister and I would whine about leftovers when we were growing up because not a morsel of food was ever wasted in our house!

And I thought this weekend after Thanksgiving might be a fine time to re-think leftovers from a more mature point of view.

According to WastedFood, Americans waste as much as half the food produced each year. That’s over 100 billion pounds a year, enough to fill a football stadium every single day!

When you read statistics like this, you realize how ridiculous and sad it is that anyone in our country should be going to bed hungry.

And our propensity for leftovers isn’t limited to food. It applies to clothing, too.

According to Eartheasy, 12 million tons of textile waste is generated in North America every year. That amounts to about 68 pounds per household, 90% of which could be recycled.

And then there’s the growing tsunami of e-waste.

The International Association of Electronics Recyclers has projected that as we upgrade and replace our cell phones, computers, televisions, DVDs and video game systems, about 3 BILLION electronic units will be scrapped in the next decade.

The solution?

Well, unlike leftovers from the Thanksgiving table which will hopefully be consumed by the end of the weekend, these clothing and electronic leftover problems can be helped by shifting our focus downstream.

In other words, consider buying used whenever possible to extend the life cycle of items.

It’s definitely something I’ve been embracing more and more.

My car? Used.
My scanner? Used.
My camera? Used.
My steamer? Used.
My leather jacket? Used.

I think there’s often an association that used somehow means inferior but sometimes these “used” items are hardly used at all. And, often, what’s obsolete for one user is actually an upgrade for someone else.

So with your own used items, instead of simply taking the easy way out and throwing them in the trash, consider disposing of them downstream, too.

A computer that’s too sluggish for you may be a real lifesaver for a college student who needs a reliable word processor to format his papers.

A soldier overseas would love if you’d donate your old cellphone to Cell Phones for Soldiers so they can recycle it properly and convert it into a calling card for him to use.

A teenage girl would be oh-so-grateful if you’d send that bridesmaid dress you’ll never wear again to Donate My Dress so she has something to wear to her prom.

And many nursing homes and assisted living facilities would be happy to welcome your gift of gently used books and magazines.

Of course, thoughtfulness and consciousness during the purchase process are equally important.

*Will your child really benefit from ANOTHER plastic doodad or stuffed animal?
*Do you really need ANOTHER black skirt to hang next to the three already in your closet?
*Could you BORROW a drill from a friend to hang your pictures instead of purchasing one that you won’t use again for three years?

Given similar price and quality, wouldn’t you PREFER to purchase an item that takes sustainability into account?

Perhaps that’s why I love vintage clothing so much. It’s not only good for our pocketbooks but it’s good for the environment.

As vintage fashionistas, we already have a preservationist spirit. The thought of these beautiful garments landing in landfills makes us C-R-A-Z-Y! Let’s face it, we love LEFTOVERS when it comes to clothing. So just imagine what we can do together for our communities and our planet if we apply that spirit to other areas of our lives!

That’s why I’m working on a course that I’ll be offering in 2012 called 30 DAYS TO A GREENER LIFE. And I do hope you’ll join me!

Buying great vintage dresses like today’s VPOD will be just one of the many simple and easy suggestions. This vintage 1970s halter dress is a colorful addition to your closet. It’s offered by one of my favorite vintage shopping haunts here in LA which has finally opened an online boutique.

And it’s full of fabulous leftovers just like this for stylish Vintage Crusaders!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Suede and Silk Dress and Getting Perspective

vintage 1960s suede and silk neiman marcus dress 2

vintage 1960s suede and silk neiman marcus dress

I woke up this morning feeling like I was hit by a truck.

Oh, that’s right, I was.

Yesterday I was rear-ended on the 101 Freeway by a Chevy Trailblazer that pushed me straight into the Prius in front of me.

A car sandwich, let’s call it, with me and my Honda as the center fixings.

And when you realize you’re being hit, you know you can’t do anything but surrender to the moment, but you also don’t know what the outcome’s gonna be.

And that’s a little scary.

Fortunately, in this case, it all worked out okay.

I ended up with the worst of it and that’s just a nasty scar on my clavicle from the seat belt and minor aches and pains. Plus my car has a few boo-boo’s, too.

But I have to tell you, that feeling of complete awareness, of complete aliveness, that happens in the moment you’re  being hit, well, it’s a real wake-up call to what’s important.

Or perhaps, I should say, to what’s not so important.

For instance, I promise that if you’re ever slammed by a pick-up truck you won’t care if you’re wearing the hottest brand of jeans.

And you’ll notice your handbag is going to careen into the dashboard whether it’s a Louis Vuitton or a $9.99 clearance special from Target.

And the moisturizer that costs you $295 a jar isn’t gonna protect your pretty cheekbones any better than the bargain brand if they hit the windshield.

Clearly and quickly, so many of the things that we obsess about and think matter get pushed into their proper perspective.

One of my mentors had a very serious accident while he was in college and discovered in his moment of pure awareness that you’re only gonna care about three things:

Did I live?
Did I love?
Did I matter?

The key is using minor accidents like this — what I think of as taps on the shoulder from the universe — to re-examine priorities and make sure the path you’re taking is the one you want to be on.

But don’t wait for the proverbial truck to hit you to start doing that!

You can stop worrying about silly things like labels and what’s in and what’s out and all that other nonsense right now.

Today’s VPOD, for instance, features a fabulous unlabeled suede and silk dress from Neiman Marcus. It’s just right for Fall for a gal who knows the label on the inside of her dress doesn’t make her look stylish. It’s the energy she brings to the world that makes her dress look stylish.

That’s the different perspective you have when you’re a vintage fashionista!
