VPOD: Vintage Art Deco Sterling Peacock Ring

I attended a seminar this past weekend and whenever I pass out business cards at these events I inevitably get asked why I chose a peacock feather as a brand logo.

There are two reasons, actually.

First, there is how much peacock symbology aligns with my vision of Zuburbia.

For instance, peacocks represent pride in appearance and integrity and challenge us not to be afraid to show our true colors. And while peacocks appear in the mythology of many cultures, ultimately they stand primarily for Beauty, Knowledge and Power, which is the message I try to share every day:

the BEAUTY that is unique to every woman
the KNOWLEDGE that we should seek every day
and
the POWER that we share to change the world

Second, the peacock appears to be my own personal totem animal, appearing unexpectedly and often in my life. For instance, I snapped the picture above as I entered the Redwood City Sofitel Hotel at check-in last Wednesday. This beautiful mural was painted on a wall of the portico and I spied this proud little fella every time I walked through the lobby.

So, with peacocks on my mind, it’s no surprise that I chose this fab ring as today’s VPOD.

This Art Deco sterling silver peacock ring has fine detail and sparkling rhinestones and would be a fine reminder that you possess enormous reserves of beauty, knowledge and power all your own.

What an empowering find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Hobe Multi-Stone Nugget Ring

Unlike most fashion bloggers in America, I won’t be Monday morning quarterbacking all the gowns that walked the Oscar Red Carpet. Instead, I’d like to bring some attention to Joanna Zelman’s article on the Huffington Post celebrating the nominated environmentalists this year.

While many of you may be familiar with Natalie Portman’s eco-shoe line or may have noticed that four out of five of this year’s Oscar-nominated documentaries dealt with environmental issues, you might not know that…

…Colin Firth has two fair-trade cafes and an ecological store in Britian

…Mark Ruffalo has lobbied tirelessly to end fracking (a process to retrieve natural gas from shale)

Dark Swan, 127 Hours, and The Social Network all received EMA Green Seals for being environmentally friendly

I think a few moments of praise, perhaps even a round of applause for these green efforts should be sprinkled in among the heaps of criticism being thrown around this morning about the unmitigated disaster that was last night’s Oscar show.

It reminded me that when you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one.

If you’re going to create a mishmash then stick with jewelry, like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1970s Hobe multi-stone nugget ring somehow captures the magic that turns chaos into beauty.

It’s a praise-worthy find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Verdura Turquoise and Diamond Ring

“Any jewel that Verdura touches becomes a more interesting jewel.”
Vogue magazine

Imagine my surprise to be flipping through the pages of my October issue of Elle Decor and be stopped in my tracks by their fantastic feature on Verdura.

Fulco di Verdura was a duke turned jewelry designer whose exquisite creations and fascinating career took him to Paris, LA, NYC, Venice and Hollywood.

And his client list? It was filled with blue-bloods, Hollywood celebrities and Park Avenue mavens like Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Diana Vreeland, Babe Paley, Clare Booth Luce, Joan Crawford and, oh, let’s not forget the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

You can view a wonderful company history at Verdura.com or learn more from Patricia Corbett’s fantastic book, Verdura: The Life and Work of a Master Jeweler, with almost 200 color illustrations.

And should any of you be hearing engagement bells in your future, then take a peek at today’s VPOD.

This circa 2000 vintage 18k turquoise and diamond ring by Verdura is so much more interesting than a plain ol’ diamond and it’s a quite the bargain since it’s available at about $8000 less than its original retail price.

Come to think of it, that makes it a bargain for any vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Emmons Poison Ring

For centuries, poison rings have been used to conceal lethal substances. Famous deaths attributed to poison rings include the ancient Greek orator Demosthenes and the Carthaginian general Hannibal while tales abound of Cesare Borgia, a famous nobleman during the Renaissance, wearing a poison ring that he used to help bring down political rivals. It’s all very James Bond, don’t you think?

And it only took a few centuries for American capitalism to spy an opportunity. Several companies now offer poison rings that are specially designed to hold Viagra and Cialis pills. But don’t let that stop you from grabbing one of these ingenious little gems for yourself.

Today’s VPOD, for instance, is a very feminine vintage poison pill by Emmons. And although I strongly recommend NOT using this ring to store poison, it could come in quite handy to hold a pill, lip balm or solid perfume.

It’s an inexpensive conversation starter for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Great Estate Fabulous Finds.
