VPOD: Memorable Days and Vintage 1990s Gianni Versace Punk Leather Shorts

I presented a short talk to about a hundred people on Sunday and I began with a number:

17, 288

That’s the exact number of days I was alive when I opened my eyes on Sunday morning.

And except for one young lad who was celebrating his 17th birthday and had lived a mere 6,205 days, most of the people in the audience had clocked upwards of 11,000 days in their lives.

You, too, have lived thousands and thousands of days.

But how many of those days do you remember?

I mean, you remember the happy milestones, right?

A graduation, a wedding, a birth, a coveted award, the day you moved into your dream home or you opened the doors of your business.

And you remember what I call your Meteor Moments — those events that happened while you were sailing down life’s highway in one direction but got slammed onto a completely different trajectory.

Maybe you were hit by the Divorce Meteor or the Bankruptcy Meteor or the Cancer Meteor.

But of the thousands and thousands and thousands and THOUSANDS of other ordinary days, you probably remember very few.

And of these, isn’t it interesting that often a day when you were six or seven years old is easier to remember than Tuesday morning from two weeks ago?

Certain days, certain memories, are so clear that decades later you can still smell the salt air or taste the sweetness of the cake or identify the exact shade of orange in the sunset or hear the drumming beat of the music.

And yet you often completely forget even these hyper-clear memories for years at a time until something you see or hear or smell triggers you to remember them again.

When I traveled to Costa Rica with my daughter more than a decade ago, I arrived at the hotel and discovered that I forgot to bring my camera battery. With no chance of replacing it, I was devastated at the thought of having no pictures to remember the trip.

But what a gift this was!

Knowing I couldn’t rely on my camera lens to remember the trip for me, I knew I would have to really experience my days in Costa Rica if I wanted to remember them. This meant I was much more present and alive in each and every moment.

I engaged with the line of ants crawling up the wall of the bathroom. I felt the squishy mud seeping into my sneakers as I dismounted my horse on the ride up the mountain. I noticed the air whipping past my cheeks as I held tight to the zip line and sailed across the canyon.

Of all the vacations I’ve enjoyed in my life, it is this one — the one where I was forced by circumstance to feel most alive in the moment — that has imprinted the strongest memories in my consciousness.

Being present will always be the most important step in remembering more of your life but there are other things that help you bear witness, too, and it’s perfectly okay to utilize these tools. If keeping a journal, looking at photographs, holding on to mementos or recording conversations helps you access your memories later on then by all means use them!

Perhaps this is why so many of us have a garment that we wore on some memorable occasion tucked away in the back in the closet.

Of course, I still haven’t figured out if outfits help to create memorable moments or if moments just make outfits more memorable!

Either way, I think we can all agree that dressing in clothes that celebrate your unique sense of style will always help you to be more memorable to others.

Which means the gal who sports today’s VPOD, a pair of vintage 1990s studded punk leather shorts by Gianni Versace, will be unforgettable.

VPOD: Canon4Kids, NCMEC and a Vintage 1960s Leather Coat

Two Saturdays ago, I woke up at 7:40am when I heard a knock on my front door. I peeked through the blinds and saw an LAPD officer.

Uh-oh.

My heart started pounding because police officers never knock on doors to deliver good news like winning the lottery.

In this case, they were checking to see if I had noticed anything missing or had seen or heard anything suspicious the night before. It turns out that my next-door neighbors living in the house attached to mine had been robbed overnight.

“What time did it happen?” I asked.

“Well, they went to bed about 11:30 or so…” he started to reply.

“Wait! They were home?!?!”

Yes! They were fast asleep in their bedroom while their home was invaded and their electronics and wallets stolen.  Neither they nor their dog nor their parrot —  who squawks non-stop all day long — heard a thing.

Even more surprising was that they have an alarm system. But the thieves found an unarmed window and let themselves in.

As you can imagine, this immediately put me on high alert and the last two weeks have seen all kinds of improvements to my own security like padlocks for my garden gates, additional outdoor dawn-to-dusk lighting, a new security system, timers for lights, and blinds for all the windows.

canon4kids ncmec

Perhaps because crime and security has really been on my mind, I was particularly affected this morning when I read the Canon4Kids ad on the back page of USA Today.

It had pictures of 32 missing children and reminded me that more than 2,000 children are reported missing in the United States every day. Two thousand children per day!!!

My heart breaks thinking of these children and their families. Even more shocking is that, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), the majority of these children aren’t taken by strangers but are taken by people they know.

So if you have children, I strongly encourage you to visit www.missingkids.com for information and resources on how best to protect them.

If you’re still teaching your kids the old-fashioned “stranger-danger” message that NCMEC deems ineffective, you need to learn how to deliver more relevant, age-appropriate messages that will empower and protect your children in potentially dangerous situations.

As my neighbors recently discovered, after you or your family is the victim of a crime it’s too late to prevent it.

So please don’t put off having another chat with your kids. Do it today. Yes, your pre-teen may roll her eyes and cry out “Mommmmmm” but that annoying conversation may someday save her life.

And be sure to do a quick security assessment of your own living quarters pronto.

Everything I recently did to better protect myself were all things that I should have done four years ago when I moved into my home.

How, I wonder, did I let them keep getting pushed off?

How did I find the time and money to get my hair done, go to Pilates, buy gifts for family and friends and yet not find the time and money to do these critical things for my own safety?

How? Because we never think it will happen to us.

Oh, if only it was as easy to protect ourselves from crime as it is to protect ourselves from the weather!

Today’s VPOD features a fabulous vintage 1960s leather coat that will keep all the nasty elements at bay.

It’s a safe and secure fashion choice for a Vintage Crusader.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Suede and Silk Dress and Getting Perspective

vintage 1960s suede and silk neiman marcus dress 2

vintage 1960s suede and silk neiman marcus dress

I woke up this morning feeling like I was hit by a truck.

Oh, that’s right, I was.

Yesterday I was rear-ended on the 101 Freeway by a Chevy Trailblazer that pushed me straight into the Prius in front of me.

A car sandwich, let’s call it, with me and my Honda as the center fixings.

And when you realize you’re being hit, you know you can’t do anything but surrender to the moment, but you also don’t know what the outcome’s gonna be.

And that’s a little scary.

Fortunately, in this case, it all worked out okay.

I ended up with the worst of it and that’s just a nasty scar on my clavicle from the seat belt and minor aches and pains. Plus my car has a few boo-boo’s, too.

But I have to tell you, that feeling of complete awareness, of complete aliveness, that happens in the moment you’re  being hit, well, it’s a real wake-up call to what’s important.

Or perhaps, I should say, to what’s not so important.

For instance, I promise that if you’re ever slammed by a pick-up truck you won’t care if you’re wearing the hottest brand of jeans.

And you’ll notice your handbag is going to careen into the dashboard whether it’s a Louis Vuitton or a $9.99 clearance special from Target.

And the moisturizer that costs you $295 a jar isn’t gonna protect your pretty cheekbones any better than the bargain brand if they hit the windshield.

Clearly and quickly, so many of the things that we obsess about and think matter get pushed into their proper perspective.

One of my mentors had a very serious accident while he was in college and discovered in his moment of pure awareness that you’re only gonna care about three things:

Did I live?
Did I love?
Did I matter?

The key is using minor accidents like this — what I think of as taps on the shoulder from the universe — to re-examine priorities and make sure the path you’re taking is the one you want to be on.

But don’t wait for the proverbial truck to hit you to start doing that!

You can stop worrying about silly things like labels and what’s in and what’s out and all that other nonsense right now.

Today’s VPOD, for instance, features a fabulous unlabeled suede and silk dress from Neiman Marcus. It’s just right for Fall for a gal who knows the label on the inside of her dress doesn’t make her look stylish. It’s the energy she brings to the world that makes her dress look stylish.

That’s the different perspective you have when you’re a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Gianni Versace Tassel Leather Jacket to Celebrate Versace Coming to H&M

vintage 1980s gianni versace tassel leather jacket

Ladies, start your engines and mark your calendars so you can race on over to H&M on November 17th to grab some goodies from the Versace collection!

Women’s Wear Daily and The Telegraph are reporting that Versace has come on board for H&M’s latest designer collaboration. That means this November you’ll be able to find Versace silk and studded leather dresses along with high heels and costume jewelry, plus you’ll be able to snag a little something for the man in your life from the menswear collection and a little something to jazz up your abode from the homewear collection.

And while we may never know what caused Donatella, who in the past has refused such diffusion line offers, to suddenly change her mind, I’m sure we’ll see tons of Versace fans scratching their heads all the way to the checkout.

Of course, if you’re a non-vegan and you prefer to lead a more sustainable fashion life, then you may want to let those crowds battle it out in November and just grab today’s VPOD instead.

This vintage 1980s Gianni Versace tassel leather jacket is buttery soft and oh-so-yummy.

And it’s the real deal for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Ungaro Rabbit Fur and Leather Coat

When you’ve been in the vintage clothing business as long as I have, it’s inevitable that you will see the same vintage clothing item show up more than once. And it’s always surprising when it does. I often think, “Amazing! I used to own that dress,” or “I remember seeing that dress a few years back in a vintage shop.”

Now certainly the chances of you donning a vintage ready-to-wear item and seeing someone wearing the same piece as you is infinitesimally low. In fact, it will probably never happen during your lifetime!  But it is possible.

Of course, you won’t have that concern with today’s VPOD. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece that was produced for the Ungaro runway in the 1980s and then was too expensive to put into production.

Created from white rabbit fur and hand-painted leather in an abstract print, this amazing vintage coat features wide lapels that sparkle with iridescent beads and paillettes and a matching belt that extends the theme with fur on one side and leather on the other.

It’s a magnificent find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Frock NYC.
