VPOD: Vintage 1960s Broadtail Fur Coat and the California Proposed Fur Labeling Law

vintage 1960s broadtail fur coat

Under current California law, a garment must have at least $150 worth of fur before it requires a label stating it’s made from real animal fur. But that may be about to change thanks to the work of California Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco.

At the request of The Human Society of the United States, she has introduced a bill in the California legislature that would require that all garments containing fur be labeled with the animal and the country of origin. If passed, California will join five other states who already have similar legislation.

Now certainly whether or not to include fur in a wardrobe is  a controversial issue and one that each fashionista has to come to terms with on her own. But with the huge improvements in fake fur that are being made, it is becoming harder and harder to distinguish faux from real. We believe that every fashionista deserves to be fully informed about her fashion choices so she can make them with awareness, so we think this labeling law is a great idea.

And while there’s no word if it will apply to vintage furs, we believe vintage dealers should make every effort to keep their clients fully informed as well. Of course, if you do choose to wear fur, we hope you’ll pass new by and choose a vintage version like today’s VPOD instead.

This vintage 1960s broadtail coat with fox collar is a real beauty for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Faux Fur Convertible Coat

Talk about balanced reporting! Today’s New York Times featured two fashion articles that talk about fur: “Fashion Feels Furs Warm Embrace” reported that almost 2/3 of designers showing in New York used real fur in their collections (shame! shame!) while “Can Sackcloth Have Fur Trim” detailed Karl Lagerfeld’s use of what he calls “fantasy furs” which are (surprise! surprise!) actually fake!

Fur is a billion dollar industry–that’s billion with a “b”–which means that there are plenty of “lobbyists” who woo designers to use fur in their collections. But just like the dieter who exercises self-control and refuses dessert, each fashionista has the power to just say no. So if you must wear fur, then please, please, choose a faux version or even better yet, choose a vintage faux fur like today’s VPOD.

This ingenious gem from the 1960s is really two coats in one with a bottom that zips off so that the top of the coat can be worn as a cropped jacket. Your pocketbook will love the $60 price tag and your conscience will love that it didn’t harm one hair on an animal’s head.

It’s a lovely faux fur choice for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Gray Glamour Wool Coat

When searching for vintage clothing online, it’s important that you use the right keywords to find what you want. And heaven forbid you’re looking for something gray, because well, there’s gray (the American spelling) and then there’s grey (the British spelling). Of course, since vintage clothing sellers on both sides of the pond spell this color both ways without any sensible rhyme or reason, the wise online vintage shopper knows to plug both spellings into their search engines.

If you do, you’ll be rewarded with a treat like today’s VPOD. This 1960s vintage wool coat in charcoal gray has a cozy faux fur lining plus faux fur trim, offset toggle buttons, pockets and a whole lot o’ style.

It’s a surefire way to savor gray if you’re a vintage fashionista!

Available at Mill Street Vintage.
