VPOD: Vintage 1960s Broadtail Fur Coat and the California Proposed Fur Labeling Law

vintage 1960s broadtail fur coat

Under current California law, a garment must have at least $150 worth of fur before it requires a label stating it’s made from real animal fur. But that may be about to change thanks to the work of California Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco.

At the request of The Human Society of the United States, she has introduced a bill in the California legislature that would require that all garments containing fur be labeled with the animal and the country of origin. If passed, California will join five other states who already have similar legislation.

Now certainly whether or not to include fur in a wardrobe is  a controversial issue and one that each fashionista has to come to terms with on her own. But with the huge improvements in fake fur that are being made, it is becoming harder and harder to distinguish faux from real. We believe that every fashionista deserves to be fully informed about her fashion choices so she can make them with awareness, so we think this labeling law is a great idea.

And while there’s no word if it will apply to vintage furs, we believe vintage dealers should make every effort to keep their clients fully informed as well. Of course, if you do choose to wear fur, we hope you’ll pass new by and choose a vintage version like today’s VPOD instead.

This vintage 1960s broadtail coat with fox collar is a real beauty for a vintage fashionista!
