VPOD: Vintage 1940s Jersey Knit Hat

vintage 1940s jersey hat

If you still hear your mother’s voice ringing in your ears telling you to “Wear a hat!” because you lose most of your body heat through your head, you should know that this is a myth that has since been debunked.

The myth seems to have originally been based on a U.S. Army experiment back in the 1950s that dressed volunteers in Arctic survival suits with only their heads uncovered. Now, as you might expect, those volunteers lost most of their body heat through their heads. After all, it was the only part of their bodies left exposed!

But the conclusion drawn from the data, written up in a U.S. Army survival manual in the 1970s, that hats should be worn in cold weather because 40-50% of body heat is lost through the head, is just simply incorrect.

In fact, when the body’s at rest, according to Barry S. Brown, a professor at the University of Arkansas, “heat loss through the head accounts for only 7-10% of total heat dissipation.”

He points out, however, that wearing a hat in cold weather is still strongly advised. So why not grab today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1940s jersey knit wool cap with floral fabric flowers will keep you warm and look quite chic when the cold wind doth blow.

It’s a sensible winter find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Mustard Wool Coat with Fur Cuffs

Mustard has always been associated with medicinal properties. The ancient Greeks believed it was created as a gift to mankind by Asclepious, a god of healing, and mustard plasters are still used today.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the condiment, which was probably first cooked up by the Romans. But I do love the color of yellow mustard.

It’s a sure-fire way to punch up your home decor or your closet. Of course, not every gal can pull off today’s VPOD.

But if you have light skin and dark hair like this model, this vintage 1960s wool coat and its head-turning shade is a perfect pick. Its mod, minimalist styling looks quite contemporary and clocks in at less than $100!

It’s a perfect fashion accompaniment to a vintage fashionista!.

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Wool and Suede Cape

I’m at the University of Berkeley this entire week for a speaking gig and it’s freezing! I guess I’m one of those weather wimps from southern California now because even though the digital temperature reads 68 degrees, the bitter, damp chill feels more like 40 degrees to me.

And as my teeth chattered and I watched all the college co-eds scurry to their classes this morning, I couldn’t help but wish I had packed a Fall beauty like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1980s charcoal grey cape with black suede appliques would be oh-so-hip with leggings but quite professional with black trousers. And it looks like it could head-off those biting headwinds and keep a heat-challenged gal like me toasty warm with plenty of style.

It’s a fine Fall find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Louis Feraud Coat

“Fashion is an opportunity to be chic, to conspire between reality and desire.” – Louis Feraud

Women love men who love women and one designer who loved and adored us and proved it with every stitch was Louis Feraud.

Beloved by the Parisian elite in the 1960s, stylish women traipsed through the streets in his fabulous designs looking oh-so-polished and chic. A team player, he assembled a group of experts that included color gurus and stylists to come up with what he called “weather forecasts” to predict fashion trends as he was always looking toward the future.

And he did a heck of a job because now the future is here and today’s VPOD, a vintage 1960s wool coat he designed for Saks Fifth Avenue, looks as stylish as ever with its clean lines, sharp trim and meticulous craftsmanship.

It’s a Feraud fantasy for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s YSL Yves Saint Laurent Wool Cape

Here’s a great dinner party question for you:

“If you could have one superpower what would it be?”

The ability to fly? Invisibility? Telekinesis?

NPR featured a piece on this issue over the weekend and the surprising part was that almost everyone knew immediately which superpower they’d choose but no one was interested in using their superpower to help others.

As for me, I’d want to be a caped crusader in today’s VPOD with the ability to take away physical and emotional pain. This vintage 1970s wool cape from Yves Saint Laurent’s Ballet Russe collection is a museum quality collector’s piece and an ultra-chic way to fight fashion crime.

It’s a powerful find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Time’s Up Vintage.
