VPOD: Vintage Fur Trim Vest Top and Hybrids

vintage jacques aran fur trim vest top

Last week the Natural Resources Defense Council announced their campaign to raise federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards to 60 miles per gallon by 2025.

And when you consider that auto industry analyst, Alan Baum is quoted on hybridcars.com as tracking 27 new hybrids and plug-ins that will appear in the next year alone and says that by 2015 there should be more than 108 models for us to choose from, this fuel standard goal seems almost doable.

Of course, if you’re not yet ready to trade-in your set of wheels for an auto hybrid, you can always consider a fashion hybrid.

Take today’s VPOD for instance. This very hip fur-trimmed vintage piece is a fashion hybrid — part vest, part top — that promises you exceedingly high style mileage for your wardrobe dollar.

What an eco-conscious find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Beaded Cardigan Sweater and a Food Revolution

I am so glad to hear that ABC gave a second-season order to Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, with six new episodes to be filmed this winter and broadcast in 2011.

As someone who completely revamped her diet well over a decade ago (I won’t touch meat, fish, hydrogenated oils, food colorings or preservatives, for instance) I am a definite fan of Jamie Oliver’s crusade for healthier eating in America.

So I was quite taken aback when Jamie Oliver appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and revealed some key differences between the food served at McDonald’s here in the States and the food served at home in his native England.

For instance, in England, the only milk sold or served at McDonald’s is semi-skim organic. ALL of it is skim organic!

But that’s not all.

McDonald’s recently received a “Good Egg” award from Compassion in World Farming because by the end of this year all McDonald’s in the European Union will be serving only 100% free-range, cage-free eggs. 100% free-range, cage-free eggs!

The only difference in these standards, according to Jamie Oliver, “is the public and what they expect.”

Clearly the British expected more and demanded more and they got it.

And that makes a gal like me, who values her health and animal welfare, wonder why there aren’t more Americans demanding the same sort of positive changes here in the US.

Of course, the lack of chemical preservatives in my diet does affect my thinking. Proof positive? I spied today’s beautiful VPOD with its beaded amber waves of grain and immediately started thinking about genetically modified wheat! (Which is also a no-no on the Kincaid Diet Plan, by the way.)

Fortunately, however, you don’t need to fret your pretty little head over “Frankenfoods” to don this gem.

And that makes it a fabulous find for even the most health-conscious vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Wool and Suede Cape

vintage 1980s wool and leather cape

I’m at the University of Berkeley this entire week for a speaking gig and it’s freezing! I guess I’m one of those weather wimps from southern California now because even though the digital temperature reads 68 degrees, the bitter, damp chill feels more like 40 degrees to me.

And as my teeth chattered and I watched all the college co-eds scurry to their classes this morning, I couldn’t help but wish I had packed a Fall beauty like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1980s charcoal grey cape with black suede appliques would be oh-so-hip with leggings but quite professional with black trousers. And it looks like it could head-off those biting headwinds and keep a heat-challenged gal like me toasty warm with plenty of style.

It’s a fine Fall find for a vintage fashionista!

Very Vintage Hosiery and Tights

vintage tights

Though this photo is about the shoes, (let us not forget to show our reverence to the pretty vintage shoes here) I really want to talk about what’s adorning these legs.

Flashy hosiery is timeless. Any of these could be worn today and spectators would believe that they’re brand new (though they are all probably being held up by garters and the fabric lacks as much stretch as today’s tights).

Did you know…

It wasn’t until the 40’s/50’s that women in dance and theater began sewing their stockings to their briefs that the idea for pantyhose was born, and it took till the 60’s for them to become near as easy to wear as they are today.

Despite all the heavy machinery necessary to hold these babies up, I would proudly sport any of them!

Oh, how I love leg adornment!
