VPOD: Vintage 1980s Stripe Sweater

vintage 1980s stripe sweater

Say hello to Fall and the first official day of Sweater Weather!

Everyone warned me when I moved to southern California that I’d miss the change of seasons. After all, I grew up near the Poconos where Mother Nature puts on a magnificent display of colorful leaves for a few weeks every year.

But surprisingly, even in LA, there are four distinct seasons. Sure, those seasons are a lot more subtle, but that just means you have to pay a little more attention.

And after sweltering in an oven called Tempe for the last few days—the temperature is hovering about 107 degrees in the afternoons—I’ll be reaching for a lightweight sweater when I return to the cooler 60 degree evenings in LA this weekend.

Today’s VPOD would be a perfect choice. This unlabeled multi-color striped lightweight knit from the 1980s looks like a Missoni descendant and is simply charming with its keyhole neckline and wooden loop closure.

It’s a pretty Fall find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Lanvin Dove Print Dress

World Peace.

That’s what I wished for as I blew out my birthday candles this year.

Seriously.

And I think perhaps it’s because I was reading Sebastian Junger’s War at the time, a fascinating and disturbing book that details what life is really like for our troops in Afghanistan.

Unlike many Americans I don’t have any personal friends or family serving overseas, and yet I can honestly say that I think about our troops each and every day…When I’m planning a trip back East to visit family and I think of all the families separated by war…When I’m eating a delicious, nutritious meal and remember all of the men and women serving our country who survive on MREs…When I’m enjoying a simple pleasure like a hot shower and know the people protecting my freedom are suffering harsh conditions.

So you can see my attraction to today’s VPOD, a vintage 1970s dress by Lanvin with a print that celebrates a universally recognized symbol of peace: the white dove.

In 1949, Pablo Picasso created a lithograph featuring a white dove for the International Peace Congress in Paris and artists everywhere took up his charge, including Jules-Francois Crahay, the designer for Lanvin who used this unique print.

It’s a very peaceful dress for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Thinking Outside the Enid Collins Box

Enid Collins collectors are clapping their hands in glee because a collection of 49 Enid Collins handbags are currently being auctioned on eBay!

Collins of Texas began making these whimsical, kitschy bags in 1959 in two varieties: the box bags shown here and canvas bucket bags decorated with paint, sequins and rhinestones in themed designs.

But I want to encourage everyone to “think outside the Enid Collins box.”

The wooden handbags need not be carried as purses. They also look quite charming when displayed on a desk, cupboard or vanity and are the perfect size to hold hair accessories, pencils, coupons, and more.

That makes them very versatile finds for vintage fashionistas!

VPOD: Vintage 1990s Lace-Up Suede Boots

I remember a teacher from junior high always reminding us that “Health is Wealth.” And the older I get the more I appreciate how true this is.

But while I exercise, eat right, wear sunscreen, meditate, and pretty much do everything I can to stay healthy, my one vice is high heels.

Oh, I’m aware of the dangers. A recent study from Iowa State University just confirmed with sensors, accelerometers, and force platforms that yes, indeed, high heels change the way we walk and alter our body posture in a way that puts strain on our ankles, knees, hips and lower backs. Make no mistake. Prolonged wearing of high heels can contribute to joint degeneration and knee osteoarthritis.

But interestingly, one part of the study focusing on impact and heel height showed that the peak impact came at two inches and that wearing higher heels actually had the same impact as wearing flats!

And that’s just the excuse I’d need to snag today’s VPOD.

These 1990s blue suede platform boots from Barney’s NY have sexy laces and an oh-so-perfect three-inch heel.

They’re a perfect find for a shoe-lovin’ vintage fashionista!

Available at Santoki Vintage.
