Necklaces are so last year. The hot new accessory is the Necklush!

You can wear the multiple, seamless loops like a necklace or twist and turn them into a scarf or cowl. Each one is handmade and hand-printed so it’s a 7-day wait before your order will ship but it’ll be worth the wait!

This ingenious design, chosen by the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum to represent Etsy’s 220,000 sellers in the Design Triennial, is sure to become a favorite go-to with your jeans, leggings and tees.

And it’s a fab accessory for any fashionista!

I spent the most pleasant Saturday afternoon enjoying the fabulous fashion exhibit at the new Resnick Pavilion at LACMA.

Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail 1700-1915 features the museum’s groundbreaking acquisition of a major collection of European garments that spans over 200 years of fashion.

The show opened today and will run through March 6, 2011.

Here are some pics to whet your appetite:

If you’re in the LA area, be sure to put this exhibit on your must-see list.

And if the West Coast isn’t in your plans, then hop on over to the Fashion Costume Party at the LACMA website. Although touted as a children’s game, this interactive application will give you an up close and personal look of many of the exhibit’s highlights.

Enjoy!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Rhinestone Eyeglass Frames

Get ready for presbyopia! This almost universal condition usually strikes between the ages of 35 and 40 and, unlike some other signs of aging, there is no surgery to correct it.

It’s caused by the stiffening of the lens of the eye and causes the blurring in your short-range vision that creates the need for reading glasses. And I do mean glasses, plural. Since stress can intensify the problem, you may find that you actually need two or more pair of glasses with different levels of magnification, or “diopter strength.”

And while you can certainly stride into your local drug store and pick up a functional pair of reading glasses off a rack, if you’re a discerning fashionista you may prefer to style yourself in something that’s a little more eco-chic.

Enter today’s VPOD. This vintage pair of 1950s eyeglass frames of pearlized ivory lucite and a touch of rhinestone bling would be happy to accompany you to an optician for new lenses.

They’re a sweet little accessory for an aging vintage fashionista!

Available at Back Thennish Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage 1966 Scaasi Oscar Gown for Mitzi Gaynor

A September 2010 Los Angeles magazine poll reports that 19% of shoppers admitted to buying an item because a celebrity wore it. More interesting is that the same poll showed that 24% of sales clerks have LIED about telling a customer that a celebrity bought an item just to sell it!

Don’t get caught in this trap.

Learn what you like to wear. Discover what looks good on you. Listen to that tiny voice inside that will always guide you toward your best wardrobe choices.

Dressing authentically is what makes you cool, hip, chic and sophisticated. Dressing like a celebrity just because you think they’re cool…well, that’s plain ol’ imitation.

And consider this: Many, many celebrities don’t even dress themselves! They rely on stylists to tell them what to wear where and stylists are constantly being wooed and influenced by the fashion industry.

Of course, there are times when dressing like a celebrity makes sense.

If you’re building a vintage clothing collection, clothes worn by celebrities, especially at famous events like the Oscars, can be valuable investments.

Take today’s VPOD for instance. This stunning custom gown by Arnold Scaasi was worn by Mitzy Gaynor to the 1966 Oscars. The pink silk and tulle are embellished with sequins, paillettes and iridescent baubles that dazzle and shine.

Today’s value for this magnificent creation?

A cool $13,500.

What a gorgeous celebrity-owned find for a hard-core collector who just happens to be a vintage fashionista!

Available at Antique Dress.

I love the idea of heirlooms, those items holding special meaning to a person or family that are handed down from one generation to another.

And especially today, in our throwaway electronic world, heirlooms that are well-cared for and treasured through generations are both rare and valuable.

Whether they’re passed on at an important life milestone like a birth, death, or wedding, or simply kept in a family without any pomp or circumstance, heirlooms are always viewed as much more than pretty objects because they tingle with the love and energy of our loved ones.

Of course, not all of us have inherited grandma’s wedding ring or Uncle Henry’s pocketwatch. You may not have been the child entrusted with Aunt Harriet’s mink or the Finkle Family Bible. Perhaps you don’t even know your family history.

Well, fret not, dear friends. Anyone can embrace the heirloom spirit and birth a new heirloom at any time. Just find something you truly love, treasure it, then pass it on.

Today’s VPOD is a perfect example.  This magnificent beaded cotton coat from the 1920s has been lovingly cared for and yet somehow got separated from its original family. Why not adopt it and make it part of your family’s history?

It’s tomorrow’s heirloom for today’s vintage fashionista!

Available at Katy Kane.
