VPOD: Vintage 1960s Kenneth Jay Lane Coral & Turquoise Necklace

Fake handbags will always be a big No-No in my world but the “Fabulous Fakes” of Kenneth Jay Lane are a big Yes-Yes-YES!

This shoe designer at Christian Dior launched his company in 1963 in New York City. Since then he has amassed a wide celebrity fan base that’s included Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Nancy Reagan along with current collector Gloria Vanderbilt. You may have seen his pieces worn by Paris Hilton, Sarah Jessica Parker and the Duchess of Windsor.

His gift? Making costume jewelry as glamorous (and coveted) as million-dollar pieces, which has slowly pushed auction prices for his early work into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Fortunately, you can grab today’s VPOD, a vintage 1960s Kenneth Jay Lane coral and turquoise necklace, without having to mortgage your house.

Perfect with a minimalist linen shift dress and oh-so-lovely with a crisp white blouse, this beauty is on sale for 50% off!

And if you’ll be anywhere near Palm Beach between now and May 1, be sure to make a stop at the Norton Museum of Art to view the exhibit Fabulous Fakes: The Jewelry of Kenneth Jay Lane.

It’s a must-see for a vintage fashionista!

Balenciaga: Spanish Master is an an unprecedented fashion collaboration between The House of Balenciaga in Paris and the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute, showcasing more than 70 items of Balenciaga clothing and accessories.

The exhibit, conceived by Oscar de la Renta, Chairman of the Institute’s Board of Directors, and curated by Hamis Bowles, European Vogue’s Editor-at-Large, will run through February 19th at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute in NYC and will then be expanded for presentation as the exhibit, Balenciaga and Spain, at the de Young Museum in San Francisco from March 2 to July 4, 2011.

Masterpieces shown in this collection include Balenciaga’s 1939 “Infanta” gown, the embroidered 1957 wedding dress of Balenciaga’s Spanish muse (the Marquesa de Llanzol), matador boleros and flamenco-inspired dresses.

It’s a must-see exhibit for a vintage fashionista!

I spent the most pleasant Saturday afternoon enjoying the fabulous fashion exhibit at the new Resnick Pavilion at LACMA.

Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail 1700-1915 features the museum’s groundbreaking acquisition of a major collection of European garments that spans over 200 years of fashion.

The show opened today and will run through March 6, 2011.

Here are some pics to whet your appetite:

And if the West Coast isn’t in your plans, then hop on over to the Fashion Costume Party at the LACMA website. Although touted as a children’s game, this interactive application will give you an up close and personal look of many of the exhibit’s highlights.

Enjoy!

VPOD: Shopping in Paris & Something to Wear Exhibits

We celebrate America’s birthday this weekend and that naturally makes one think of America’s birthplace, Philadelphia. And any fashionistas visiting the City of Brotherly Love this summer may want to pop in to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to catch two complementary exhibits: Shopping in Paris: French Fashion 1850-1925 and Something to Wear: Fashion in Print 1850-1925.

Now, as you know, we tend to concentrate on contemporary vintage over here at Zuburbia. Yes, contemporary vintage–it’s quite the oxymoron! But it just means that we focus on vintage clothing that, regardless of the decade, is still considered stylish, fashionable and wearable today…and that pretty much rules out the bustles and hoop skirts of the late 19th century.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate learning about this earlier fashion history. So we think we’d enjoy perusing the displayed books, periodicals, film clips and ephemera in these two exhibits. And we suspect we’d be ooh-ing and aah-ing over the nearly 25 rarely or never-before-seen garments, including designs by the House of Worth and Lanvin.

Yes, that would be a wonderful afternoon delight for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Valentina: American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity

Kohle Yohannan, author of Valentina: American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity, says that “Valentina’s interest in collecting and wearing vintage clothing and accessories was decades ahead of its time.” And while she ran a successful couture business from the 1920s to the 1950s that rivaled the likes of Charles James and Mainbocher, and dressed women with the last names of Astor, Vanderbilt and Hearst, she is a designer that has remained in relative obscurity.

But that’s about to change. The Museum of the City of New York is currently showcasing Valentina’s work in an exhibit that runs through May 17th, 2009. A vast array of her work and items from her personal couture collection will be on display and definitely worth a visit. Can’t make it? Then the accompanying book by Kohle Yohannan is the next best thing to being there.

They’re both wonderful eye candy for a vintage fashionista!
