VPOD: La Friperie Finery and Fashion’s 10/10/10 Rule

vintage 1990s moschino pumps

Yesterday was October 10, 2010 or in shorthand, 10/10/10. Just think—we won’t be writing this date down again for 100 years!

And that got me thinking that Fashion has it’s very own 10/10/10 rule:

Good posture can make you look ten pounds lighter AND ten years younger AND can make your clothes look ten times more expensive.

Really! It’s true!

And here’s a perfect combination to prove it.

First, work on your posture. And if you don’t have years of ballet training under your belt to create the muscle memory that keeps you standing straight and tall, then I highly recommend Pilates training.

My brilliant personal Pilates trainer, Darien Gold, has two fantastic DVDs available to whip you into a lithe, balanced figure pronto.

darien gold the first seven pilates dvd darien gold intermediate pilates dvd

Start with The First Seven and work your way up to the Intermediate Mat Repertoire. It will be impossible for you to ever slouch again!

Then grab today’s VPOD, a pair of low-heeled, perfect-posture-providing vintage 1990s pumps by Moschino.

Finally, pair them with any one of a host of bargain finds from the La Friperie Boutique Inventory Reduction Sale like these goodies:

Then it’s time to strut your stuff.

With a head held high, a straight back, and a take-on-the-world attitude, no one will guess that these little beauties can all be had right now for starting bids under $11!

And there’s no need to tell. Just let’em think you snagged them at your local vintage boutique with waaaay higher price tags.

And that’s how Fashion’s 10/10/10 Rule works for vintage fashionistas!

Available at La Friperie Boutique.

P.S. Hurry! The sale ends October 14, 2010.

VPOD: Vintage Verdura Turquoise and Diamond Ring

vintage turquoise and diamond ring by verdura

“Any jewel that Verdura touches becomes a more interesting jewel.”
Vogue magazine

Imagine my surprise to be flipping through the pages of my October issue of Elle Decor and be stopped in my tracks by their fantastic feature on Verdura.

Fulco di Verdura was a duke turned jewelry designer whose exquisite creations and fascinating career took him to Paris, LA, NYC, Venice and Hollywood.

And his client list? It was filled with blue-bloods, Hollywood celebrities and Park Avenue mavens like Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Diana Vreeland, Babe Paley, Clare Booth Luce, Joan Crawford and, oh, let’s not forget the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

You can view a wonderful company history at Verdura.com or learn more from Patricia Corbett’s fantastic book, Verdura: The Life and Work of a Master Jeweler, with almost 200 color illustrations.

And should any of you be hearing engagement bells in your future, then take a peek at today’s VPOD.

This circa 2000 vintage 18k turquoise and diamond ring by Verdura is so much more interesting than a plain ol’ diamond and it’s a quite the bargain since it’s available at about $8000 less than its original retail price.

Come to think of it, that makes it a bargain for any vintage fashionista!

Available at Beladora.com.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Armonia Bikini & The Swimsuit Diet

vintage 1960s armonia bikini swimsuit

According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2006 and 2007–2008, over two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. And it’s big business since Americans spent $60 billion every year on diets, pills and programs to help them lose weight.

Now, I understand that sometimes medical issues can contribute to weight gain but the vast majority of the time, losing a few extra pounds comes down to plain ol’ willpower and discipline.

For instance, I was with a friend the other day driving back to my apartment and we passed a new cupcake bakery that opened on a nearby corner. My friend insisted she could never drive by that place every day without gaining 10 pounds.

Do I think about stopping for a yummy, gooey, sweet treat there every day? You betcha! Every single day.

Do I stop there more than once or twice a year? No way!

Why? Because I value my good health far more than the fleeting pleasure of ingesting loads of fat, calories and sugar.

Now you may not have a cupcake bakery near you but you will still face daily temptations. And beware, because we are heading into a dieting minefield on the calendar.

Halloween, Thanksgiving and Holiday parties are lining up one after another in quick succession. And that means it’s time for me to start my yearly Swimsuit Diet.

Forget counting calories. All this diet requires is a fantastic barely-there swimsuit hung in plain site in my closet. It serves as a clear daily reminder that a healthy body is waaaaay more important to me than a whole slice of cheesecake or one more glass of wine.

And by the way, you don’t ever have to actually wear the swimsuit you choose for inspiration. Take today’s VPOD for instance. This vintage 1960s bikini by Armonia is flirty and playful and, while just a tad too youthful for my 40-something body, would be a perfect hand-me-down to my niece after serving its inspirational purposes.

That makes it a double-duty find for this vintage fashionista!

Available at C. Madeleine’s.

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Judith Leiber Minaudiere and an Interview with Judith Leiber

vintage 1980s judith leiber minaudiere bag

Judith Leiber was the first woman to win a Coty Award and the first person ever to receive the award for a handbag.

Her handbags have been carried by many first ladies including Pat Nixon, Hilary Clinton, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush.

And while many women collect her gorgeous handbags, perhaps one of the most prolific collectors is Judith Leiber herself. To date, she’s collected about 900 of her bags and has over 200 on display at the East Hampton, NY museum that she founded with her husband in 2005.

To learn more about this talented and fascinating woman, be sure to read the compelling interview with Judith Leiber at Collectors Weekly.

Then, if you’re ready to add a Judith Leiber original to your collection, take a peek at today’s VPOD. This vintage 1980s crystal studded minaudiere is lined in gold leather and features a green cabochon emerald.

It’s a magnificent example of Leiber’s purse perfection for a vintage fashionista!

Available from Treasures & Pleasures at 1stdibs.
