VPOD and GIVEAWAY: Vintage Swimwear

Vintage Swimwear by Jill Salen

Vintage Swimwear by Jill Salen

Jill Salen, a freelance costume maker and lecturer
at the Royal Welsch College of Music and Drama,
has already tackled Corsets and Lingerie as topics.

In her new book, Vintage Swimwear,
she takes us on a journey through 130 years of swimwear,
from the modest garments of the 1880s through the bikinis of the 1970s.

The book includes more than 25 historically accurate and annotated patterns,
two of which include complete step-by-step sewing instructions.

Interestingly, the swimsuits featured in the book were held by museums
that would not allow Jill to touch the garments,
so she developed the patterns by sight,
holding measuring tapes up to and alongside the garments.

But the book doesn’t only contain patterns.
I discovered some fascinating tidbits of information.
For instance, did you know that as late as 1964
the Vatican banned bikinis in Catholic countries?

Fashion historians, fashion students, dressmakers
and costume designers will find the book invaluable.

And if you don’t sew, like moi, it’s a simple recipe:
Take one copy of the book,
add a punchy fabric,
mix in one talented seamstress
and voila!

You’ve got your own one-of-a-kind version of the cover suit!

Available at Amazon.

VPOD: Vintage Cole Gold Lame Swimsuit and Soul Surfer

soul surfer book

I have yet to see the movie Soul Surfer, which chronicles the true story of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton, but I am so inspired by her courage and bravery.

Bethany entered her first surf competition at the age of eight. Thirteen years later, while surfing, she was attacked by a 14-ft tiger shark which bit off her left arm. Bethany battled to survive after losing 60% of her blood and underwent multiple operations.

And while most people would have given up surfing after this and considered it an end to their careers, Bethany miraculously survived, returned to her board a month later, and won her first National Title just a little over a year after her horrifying attack.

This story makes it seem a little silly to be afraid of someone noticing your not-so-perfect thighs when you wear your swimsuit, doesn’t it?

As for me, while I love being near water and around water, you’ll seldom find me in water or on water. And since I don’t enjoy swimming, diving, snorkeling, sailing, surfing, wakeboarding, parasailing, or jetskiing, I can indulge in a swimsuit that is less athletic and far more glamorous like today’s VPOD.

This vintage Cole gold lame swimsuit is designed especially for landlubbing sun bathers who prefer the sand to the waves.

And it’s a glowing find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Lipstick Whiskey.

There are two sets of beautiful vintage photographs of Rose Marie Reid swimsuits available on eBay. Note that these are ORIGINAL photographs that were once used for swimsuit advertising campaigns, not reproductions.

And interestingly, one set’s current bid is 10 times higher than the other set’s!

Which is why I wanted to remind everyone how important it can be to take a peek at a seller’s other auctions before you do your bidding. Perhaps someone really, really wanted one of the pictures in one of the sets but maybe that someone didn’t even realize a second set was available!

In any case, I have my eye on these bathing beauties.  If you want to bid or also watch the bidding fun unfold, just click the links.

Set 1 and Set 2 both available at Kathleen’s Vintage Addict.

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Bill Blass Ruffle Swimsuit

vintage 1980s bill blass ruffle swimsuit

Abercrombie & Fitch stirred up a frenzy this week by offering padded swimwear tops for tweens at their Abercrombie Kids stores.

And in my completely unscientific discussions with mothers recently about this issue, I discovered there are passionate arguments on both sides.

In one corner are moms who believe the idea is totally ridiculous and an attempt to sexualize girls at an even younger age. They’re raging with emotion.

In the other corner are moms who recognize that some girls develop earlier than others and insist that this type of padding can actually make their daughters feel less self-conscious about their changing bodies. They’re so over all the fuss.

And interestingly, one mom pointed out that Sears and Justice have offered padded bikini tops to girls for a few years now without any of this uproar.

Look, I’m all about raising girls to have healthy body images and strong self-esteem. For me, that means regardless of whether a young girl is wearing a padded bikini top or an unpadded bikini top, whether she’s in a tankini or maillot or heck, even skinnydipping, she understands that she is more than her body.

She isn’t ashamed of her body but she also isn’t flaunting or using her body in any way other than to inwardly celebrate the fact that this miracle machine allows her to breathe and walk and play and live life to the fullest each and every day.

She recognizes her body is something to be cared for and respected and honored and that other people’s opinions about her clothing choices are less important than how her own clothing choices make her feel and act.

And now that I have that off my unpadded chest, please let me know your opinion below and then take a look at today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1980s never-worn swimsuit by Bill Blass has a playful, sassy, youthful appeal but it’s strictly for grown-up gals who happen to be feeling a little cha-cha-cha.

What a pretty little find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Posh Vintage.
