VPOD: Vintage 1960s Armonia Bikini & The Swimsuit Diet

vintage 1960s armonia bikini swimsuit

According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2006 and 2007–2008, over two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. And it’s big business since Americans spent $60 billion every year on diets, pills and programs to help them lose weight.

Now, I understand that sometimes medical issues can contribute to weight gain but the vast majority of the time, losing a few extra pounds comes down to plain ol’ willpower and discipline.

For instance, I was with a friend the other day driving back to my apartment and we passed a new cupcake bakery that opened on a nearby corner. My friend insisted she could never drive by that place every day without gaining 10 pounds.

Do I think about stopping for a yummy, gooey, sweet treat there every day? You betcha! Every single day.

Do I stop there more than once or twice a year? No way!

Why? Because I value my good health far more than the fleeting pleasure of ingesting loads of fat, calories and sugar.

Now you may not have a cupcake bakery near you but you will still face daily temptations. And beware, because we are heading into a dieting minefield on the calendar.

Halloween, Thanksgiving and Holiday parties are lining up one after another in quick succession. And that means it’s time for me to start my yearly Swimsuit Diet.

Forget counting calories. All this diet requires is a fantastic barely-there swimsuit hung in plain site in my closet. It serves as a clear daily reminder that a healthy body is waaaaay more important to me than a whole slice of cheesecake or one more glass of wine.

And by the way, you don’t ever have to actually wear the swimsuit you choose for inspiration. Take today’s VPOD for instance. This vintage 1960s bikini by Armonia is flirty and playful and, while just a tad too youthful for my 40-something body, would be a perfect hand-me-down to my niece after serving its inspirational purposes.

That makes it a double-duty find for this vintage fashionista!

Available at C. Madeleine’s.

VPOD: Vintage 1950s DeWeese Maillot Swimsuit and Petrie Point Designs

vintage 1940s deweese maillot swimsuit

Used to be that I’d spy a gorgeous but oh-so-tiny vintage 1950s swimsuit like today’s VPOD by DeWeese Designs and be oh-so-sad that I couldn’t squeeze my petite frame into it. But now I’ve learned that there is an equally fun option if you can’t wear one of these beauties—hang it on your wall!

Susan Petrie, founder of Petrie Point Designs, takes magnificent vintage swimsuits from the 1920s to the 1960s and turns them into timeless works of art. One of her pieces graced the cover of Interior Design Magazine last year and her work has been praised by the likes of Coastal Living Magazine, Hamptons Magazine, and Apartment Therapy.

She brilliantly pairs each hand-selected suit with just the right framing to really make each suit shine. Prices range from $700-$1900. So next time you’re gaping with awe at an itty-bitty teeny-weeny yellow polka dot bikini (or a dandy DeWeese like our VPOD), just call Susan and put a frame on it!

It’s a wonderful decorating alternative for a vintage fashionista!

Swimsuit available at Adore Vintage.

VPDO: Vintage 1940s Catalina Pin-Up Bikini Bathing Suit

vintage 1940s catalina pin-up bikini swimsuit bathing suittropical flower close up from vintage 1940s catalina pin-up swimsuitvintage 1940s catalina pin-up bikini swimsuit bathing suit

Catalina was founded in 1907 by John C. Bentz and persuaded such Hollywood luminaries as Marilyn Monroe, Ginger Rogers and Joan Crawford to appear in its swimsuits in early ads. But the company is perhaps most well-known for its relationship with the Miss America Pageant.

The Miss America Pageant began in Atlantic City in 1921 and during its early years, the swimsuit competition was the main event. All contestants had to wear the same suits and Catalina became a sponsor and began outfitting all the contestants in their swimwear.

Of course, one-piece suits were the norm back then. Today’s VPOD, an amazing 1940s pin-up bikini by Catalina would have been considered far too risque at the time (although it’s quite tame compared to the bikinis worn by today’s Miss America contestants). This fetching number features a bandeau top, bottom with peek-a-boo side seams and those amazing tropical flowers.

It’s a suit with plenty of sex appeal for a vintage fashionsta!

Available from Kakkoii Mono.
