VPOD: Vintage 1960s Armonia Bikini & The Swimsuit Diet

vintage 1960s armonia bikini swimsuit

According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2006 and 2007–2008, over two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. And it’s big business since Americans spent $60 billion every year on diets, pills and programs to help them lose weight.

Now, I understand that sometimes medical issues can contribute to weight gain but the vast majority of the time, losing a few extra pounds comes down to plain ol’ willpower and discipline.

For instance, I was with a friend the other day driving back to my apartment and we passed a new cupcake bakery that opened on a nearby corner. My friend insisted she could never drive by that place every day without gaining 10 pounds.

Do I think about stopping for a yummy, gooey, sweet treat there every day? You betcha! Every single day.

Do I stop there more than once or twice a year? No way!

Why? Because I value my good health far more than the fleeting pleasure of ingesting loads of fat, calories and sugar.

Now you may not have a cupcake bakery near you but you will still face daily temptations. And beware, because we are heading into a dieting minefield on the calendar.

Halloween, Thanksgiving and Holiday parties are lining up one after another in quick succession. And that means it’s time for me to start my yearly Swimsuit Diet.

Forget counting calories. All this diet requires is a fantastic barely-there swimsuit hung in plain site in my closet. It serves as a clear daily reminder that a healthy body is waaaaay more important to me than a whole slice of cheesecake or one more glass of wine.

And by the way, you don’t ever have to actually wear the swimsuit you choose for inspiration. Take today’s VPOD for instance. This vintage 1960s bikini by Armonia is flirty and playful and, while just a tad too youthful for my 40-something body, would be a perfect hand-me-down to my niece after serving its inspirational purposes.

That makes it a double-duty find for this vintage fashionista!

Available at C. Madeleine’s.

VPOD: Bikini Babe

Where I grew up, at least in my family, there was no swimming in lakes after August 15 because of some old wive’s tale that I never quite understood. But with Labor Day fast approaching, summer swim days for a lot of folks are numbered. So why not make one last splash with today’s VPOD.

This early 1960s bikini has both a patriotic and nautical feel with its bold red and white stripes, blue trim and gold anchor hardware. Plus the boy cut bottoms and full coverage top show just the right amount of skin–not too sexy but not too reserved either.

It’s an all-American find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Senorita Hollywood.

VPOD: Pretty in Pucci

A vintage dealer from Ohio once told me about going to a garage sale, walking up to the attic and finding it loaded from end to end with garment racks and boxes of amazing vintage clothes that were all old stock with hanging price tags. Well, she pinched herself and then bought the entire room! Of course, she did! This is a dream for any vintage dealer and if you’re lucky it might happen once in a lifetime.

Today’s VPOD comes from a dealer with a similar story. Unsold stock, showroom samples and more had accumulated in an old warehouse from the 60s and now this vintage is offered to you, brand new. Take today’s VPOD, for instance.

This Pucci bikini and matching jacket are stunning! But in case you’re not a fan of yellow, they have it available in another color and size too!

It’s a summer treat for a vintage fashionista!

Available at ML Vintage.

VPOD: Crystal Princess

From my own informal poll, it’s clear that most women hate buying swimsuits. Beyond the awful lighting in the dressing rooms and those three-way mirrors that force you to glimpse parts of yourself that you generally don’t see, swimsuits often don’t run true to size so it can take hours to find one that fits and is practical for your age and body shape.

However, if you’re one of those girls who’s blessed with flat abs who never gets her swimsuit wet and believes that looking fabulous beats comfort, then today’s VPOD is for you!

This 1970s Giorgio di Sant Angelo bikini is tan nylon mesh and covered with hand-placed cut crystals.

It’s definitely not for a mom headed to the kiddie pool or water park, but it is a smashing find for a Riviera-bound vintage fashionista!

Available at Swank Vintage.
