VPOD: VIntage 1950s Rose Marie Reid Swimsuit

Rose Marie Reid was the Queen of Swimwear in the 1950s ruling an empire that produced 10,000 suits a day and posted sales of $14 million by 1958. She had a knack for hiding figure flaws and pioneered the use of tummy control panels, wire bra cups, boning and adjustable straps for swimwear. A Mormon, she refused to design immodest bathing suits and while her company did ultimately create bikinis, she refused to participate in their design.

But hidden behind her business success was a personal life filled with challenges. Her children lived in another country for years while she built her business. Two of her grandchildren died in her swimming pool. She faced financial ruin in later years when her fortune was squandered by financial advisors.

Today’s VPOD features just one stunning example of her work. This 1950s bathing suit features a halter tie and a diagonal slash print that optically slims the body.

It’s a fine choice from the Queen of Swimwear for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Pucci Poolside Bikini

Bikini season is a few months away–sooner if you’re planning a Spring break. And as you sculpt your body into bikini-worthy shape with diet and exercise, it’s nice to know that a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine reports that the type of diet you use to slim down doesn’t matter as much as sticking to it.

That’s right. You can forget yo-yo, crash or fad diets. But it won’t make one ounce of difference if you follow Atkins, the Zone, Volumetrics, Weight Watchers, the South Beach Diet, the Sonoma Diet or any others. Like a lot of areas of life, it’s persistence that pays off.

Well, that plus healthy eating and exercise. One in a million can look like Heidi Klum without effort but the rest of us mortals have to work at it. And if you need just a little more motivation, take a look at today’s VPOD.

This 1960s Pucci bikini is a fabulous reward for all your hard work. And if bikini season approaches and you still feel like you’re 10,000 crunches short, you can just dangle this little beauty like a carrot and keep on crunching.

It’s a sexy poolside Pucci for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Beachside Glamour

In a recent article, Madonna’s trainer, Tracy Anderson, shared her fitness philosophy along with some tips for keeping fit. With swimsuit season around the corner, if you’re putting in your requisite one hour of exercise per day, six days a week, and your body still doesn’t look anything like Madonna’s, check out Tracy’s recommendations here.

Of course, you can always just trade in your string bikini for today’s VPOD. This authentic 1930s suit by Catalina will hide a multitude of flaws. And these retro-style suits are all the rage this season.

It’s a true beach beauty for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Retro Beach Babe

My daughter leaves this afternoon to spend New Year’s in the Canary Islands and I’m pretty sure none of the swimsuits she’s packed provides as much coverage as today’s VPOD. It’s hard to believe that back in the 1920s, suits with even more coverage than this one used to spark gang-like battles in which women were actually arested for defying laws against scanty beachwear.

Compared to a skimpy string bikini, this little number appears downright grandma-ish but retro prints (especially large, colorful florals) are back in fashion. And a suit like this is just perfect for sun-bathing. Accessorize with heels, a skinny little belt, oversize sunglasses and a floppy hat for an oh-so-glam retro Hollywood look.

It’s a fun beach find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Greasy Waitress Vintage.
