Conservationists are celebrating the annual arrival of Monarch butterflies in Mexico with a sigh of relief since researchers recorded a 109% increase in their numbers this year.

Last year saw the smallest amount of forest covered by the creatures in the last 17 years and concerns were rising that extreme weather, fires and deforestation were posing a serious threat to the Monarch’s survival.

And you gotta hand it to these little guys and gals. They make over a 2,000 mile migration from Canada over the US and into Mexico each year (which certainly puts your morning commute into perspective!).

If you get a thrill every time you see a butterfly (I know I do even though it seems to happen less frequently every year), then you’ll adore today’s VPOD.

This vintage cardigan by Jantzen dates from the late 50s to early 60s and has its very own embroidered flock of charming lepidoptera.

What a lovely spring find for a vintage fashionista!

Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave at the Legion of Honor

You won’t believe your eyes!  These amazing gowns, representing quintessential examples from costume history, are constructed entirely from paper!

For more than fifteen years, Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave has been crumpling, pleating, braiding, feathering and painting her inspirations from European paintings and costumes in museums. Now, the Legion of Honor in San Francisco is the first American museum to dedicate an entire exhibition to her work. Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave opened earlier this month and will run through June 5, 2011.

The six sections of the exhibition walk you through the artist’s creative process and inspiration and show pieces representing famous designers like Worth, Poiret and Chanel as well as an entire section devoted exclusively to Fortuny’s pleated and draped gowns.

And if San Francisco isn’t in your travel plans, a drool-worthy catalog is available from the museum store for $29.95.

It’s a don’t-miss-event for a vintage fashionista!

More information at Legion of Honor.

CREDIT: Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave is organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and sponsored by Lonna Wais. Additional support is provided by Nathalie and Garry McGuire and Elizabeth W. Vobach. Collection Connections is made possible by The Annenberg Foundation. The exhibition catalogue is supported in part by a grant from Friends of Fiber Art International.

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Gemstone Heart Earrings

vintage 1980s Gemstone Heart Earrings

Valentine’s Day seems to put hearts on center stage so let’s talk about women and their hearts for a moment.

Did you know, for instance, that heart disease is the number one killer of women in America and that five times more women die from heart disease than from breast cancer?

Or that over 35% of American women over 20 die from cardiovascular disease each and every year?

Or (and here’s the real kicker!): More women than men die of heart disease each year and yet women are less likely than men to receive appropriate follow-up care after their heart attacks.

Good heart health is waaaay more important, ladies, than boo-hooing over not having a date tonight or worrying because you have a late date and the restaurant could be all out of those gooey molten lava cakes when it comes time to order dessert.

So take a moment to review the Prevention and Early Detection Information from The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. The few minutes you spend could ensure that your heart or that of a loved one is still beating next Valentine’s Day.

Then, when you’re nicely informed, oogle today’s VPOD. These vintage 1980s heart-shaped earrings feature 18k gold and a sparkling array of gemstones including pink and green tourmalines and yellow and blue sapphires. They’re so much healthier than the usual Valentine’s Day candy hearts or Hershey kisses.

And they’re a perfect Valentine’s Day treat for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Beladora.

VPOD: Vintage London Fog Raincoat and Inspiration on the Queen Mary

vintage london fog raincoat

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is kicking into gear in New York City but we LA fashionistas will be having a little fun of our own this weekend at the 2nd Annual Vintage & Fashion Americana Event Inspiration. Lincoln Center might have replaced the tents at Bryant Park but Inspiration has an even more unique venue: The Queen Mary!

That’s right. During this two-day show, 120 exhibitors will set-up their vintage and fashion wares on the regal passenger liner which made its maiden voyage in 1936 and is now spending its retirement days as a luxury hotel.

And yes, thinking about the Queen Mary got me in a nautical mood, which explains today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1970s London Fog raincoat infuses jeans and a striped tee with a contemporary nautical vibe.

It’s quite a wardrobe anchor piece for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Leah Loves Vintage. | More Info on Event at InspirationLA.com.
