President Obama’s latest initiative, America’s Great Outdoors, seeks to double spending on land and water conservation to $900 million. Even though our nation’s enduring tough economic times, it’s encouraging to see conservation still receiving attention.
At a White House ceremony on Wednesday, the President suggested that we all ask ourselves this very important question:
“What can we do to break free from the routine and reconnect with the world around us?“
Now I’m sure he wasn’t suggesting that we all run outdoors and hug a tree (although you might want to try that sometime!) but it’s certainly an invitation for each of us to detach and unplug. A change of scenery can be a low-cost remedy when you’re feeling stressed and overworked, especially if the change of scenery actually involves some scenery like forests, oceans, mountains and waterfalls.
If you spend more time wearing prints of plants and flowers than actually interacting with plants and flowers in the real world, or if you’re more familiar with your local mall than your nearest public park, perhaps it’s time to pencil in a coffee date with Mother Nature.
