VPOD: The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor

From October 13-16, the landmark exhibition The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor will be on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and I can hardly wait to go visit!

When Elizabeth Taylor passed away in March, she left behind a treasure trove or jewels, fine art and couture which will be auctioned at Christie’s in New York (December) and London (February). But before the sales, her treasures will be available for public viewing around the world as the international tour hits Los Angeles as well as Moscow, London, Dubai, Geneva and Hong Kong.

And while others will be blinded by the bling of the famous 33.19-carat diamond that Richard Burton gave to Elizabeth Taylor (expected to fetch between $2.5 million and $3.5 million at auction!), I suspect I’ll be more enthralled with the gorgeous frocks from Halston, Chanel, Versace, Dior, Pucci, and Valentino.

If you’re unable to view the collection in person, don’t fret. Christie’s dedicated website features some beautiful highlights. Or splurge on an auction catalog and enjoy the entire collection in the privacy of your home.

And if you want to get in on the fun of bidding, Christie’s is also offering more moderately-priced items in a special online-only auction.

It’s an exciting exhibition and sale for a Vintage Crusader!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Kenneth Jay Lane Coral & Turquoise Necklace

Fake handbags will always be a big No-No in my world but the “Fabulous Fakes” of Kenneth Jay Lane are a big Yes-Yes-YES!

This shoe designer at Christian Dior launched his company in 1963 in New York City. Since then he has amassed a wide celebrity fan base that’s included Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Nancy Reagan along with current collector Gloria Vanderbilt. You may have seen his pieces worn by Paris Hilton, Sarah Jessica Parker and the Duchess of Windsor.

His gift? Making costume jewelry as glamorous (and coveted) as million-dollar pieces, which has slowly pushed auction prices for his early work into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Fortunately, you can grab today’s VPOD, a vintage 1960s Kenneth Jay Lane coral and turquoise necklace, without having to mortgage your house.

Perfect with a minimalist linen shift dress and oh-so-lovely with a crisp white blouse, this beauty is on sale for 50% off!

And if you’ll be anywhere near Palm Beach between now and May 1, be sure to make a stop at the Norton Museum of Art to view the exhibit Fabulous Fakes: The Jewelry of Kenneth Jay Lane.

It’s a must-see for a vintage fashionista!

You won’t believe your eyes!  These amazing gowns, representing quintessential examples from costume history, are constructed entirely from paper!

For more than fifteen years, Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave has been crumpling, pleating, braiding, feathering and painting her inspirations from European paintings and costumes in museums. Now, the Legion of Honor in San Francisco is the first American museum to dedicate an entire exhibition to her work. Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave opened earlier this month and will run through June 5, 2011.

The six sections of the exhibition walk you through the artist’s creative process and inspiration and show pieces representing famous designers like Worth, Poiret and Chanel as well as an entire section devoted exclusively to Fortuny’s pleated and draped gowns.

And if San Francisco isn’t in your travel plans, a drool-worthy catalog is available from the museum store for $29.95.

It’s a don’t-miss-event for a vintage fashionista!

Wall Couture: Dress Up Your Walls with Eco-Friendly Museum Fashion Banners

You may never have the means to own a couture fashion masterpiece worthy of display at a museum, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying one of these masterpieces right in your own living room.

Thanks to BetterWall, an ingenious collaboration between an art historian and an environmental consultant, many of the vinyl and canvas museum exhibition banners which once adorned streetlights (and which were normally sent to landfills after the museum exhibitions closed) are now being recycled as contemporary art for the home.

Better yet, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each banner benefits its respective museum.

Plus you get free shipping, free hardware with super-easy installation instructions and, I might add, a mighty safe piece of art to hang above your bed if you live in an earthquake-prone zone like I do!

It’s gorgeous wall couture for eco-friendly vintage fashionistas.
