VPOD: Vintage Flower Pins

It’s said that “April showers bring May flowers” but if you can’t wait that long then grab one of today’s VPODs. These colorful vintage flower pins don’t require planting, watering, weeding or cutting. And they won’t drop their petals and wilt in a few days. No, these beauties can add a whimsical touch to your wardrobe all summer long.

Here’s just a few ideas for how to use them:

* Pin one to a bobby pin for an instant hair accessory
* Pin one to the pocket flap of a summer blazer
* Pin a cluster of floral pins to a solid-color evening clutch and use it for day
* Use them like shoe clips to bring new life to plain ol’ pumps or sandals
* Take a piece of velvet or satin ribbon, cut to the proper length for you, and use a floral pin to create a belt
* Pin one or two to a long chain necklace for a fun spring look

However you choose to use them, they’re fabulous, fun finds for vintage fashionistas!

VPOD: Vintage 1940s Floral Print Rayon Dress

Rayon, sometimes called “artificial silk,” was commercially produced for the first time in Europe in 1905. And at first glance there’s nothing artificial about it. Unlike other man-made fibers like nylon and polyester, rayon is made from wood pulp, not petroleum. That’s a good thing, right?

Well, unfortunately, to turn wood pulp, a natural, inexpensive and renewable resource, into rayon fiber, it needs to be treated, bleached, soaked in caustic soda, aged, filtered, vacuum treated, pumped into a bath of sulfuric acid, washed, treated with a a dilute solution of sodium sulfide, and given a final wash. This requires loads of energy and water and contributes to both air and water pollution.

Which is just one more reason why you should choose today’s VPOD. This vintage rayon dress from the 1940s is simply darling with beautiful draping and a floral print that perfectly offsets the chocolate brown. Wear it now with tights, ankle boots and a little sweater. Then break it out for spring in high heels.

It’s a fantastic rayon find for a vintage fashionista!
