It’s hard enough being an entrepreneur in current times, but imagine the extra difficulties of being a businesswoman in the 1940s. That’s why I love the stories of ordinary women (with extraordinary style) who couldn’t help but express their creative juices and produce lovely designs that we vintage fashionistas still covet.
Margaret Smith is a perfect example. As a local girl in Maine back in the 1940s, she stitched up some funky little beach bags for her friends and ended up stitching up thousands of different handbags over the next few decades. And while Margaret Smith, Inc. shuttered its doors last year, there are still plenty of her colorful, printed bags available. Today’s VPOD features a fine 1950s canvas shoulder bag printed with a small flock of songbirds.
It’s a cheery Spring find for a vintage fashionista!

No one out there is still using brown paper or plastic shopping bags, right? If you are, it’s time to get with the program and start carrying your groceries with style. Sure, you and I may not be able to solve the world’s energy crisis or come up with a brilliant way to stop global warming, but we can each do our own small part to contribute to a solution. And carrying a hip little shopping bag like today’s VPOD is one way to begin.
This stylish vintage 1960s tote is by Margaret Smith of Gardiner, Maine who is famous for her novelty print handbags. Here, she delights us with a colorful, floral graphic exterior and a perky lining of lime green nylon broadcloth.
It’s a perfect market day find for a vintage fashionista!
