VPOD: Vintage Jean Muir Tweed and Leather Dress

vintage jean muir tweed and leather dress vintage jean muir tweed and leather dress 2

Have you ever slipped on a dress in a changing room while you were out shopping and immediately known, even before looking at yourself in a mirror, that you had found The One?

It’s amazing how sometimes the energy of a dress just matches your energy perfectly. How it hugs your body like a glove. How it hits in all the right places. How it makes you feel almost as comfortable as you do in your own skin.

If you love this feeling, then I encourage you to explore the fashion world of Jean Muir.

This British designer died in 1995 but she left behind a wonderful collection of vintage dresses known for their simple, flattering, feminine shapes. And perhaps that’s because Jean Muir herself made sure to slip into each one during her fittings. She insisted this was the only way to feel if there was something wrong in the design. And this attention to detail, and this dedication to the comfort of women everywhere, is worth celebrating.

Today’s VPOD features a yummy vintage tweed Jean Muir dress with leather trim and leather belt. Buttons down the back and concealed side pockets add extra charm.

It’s a delightful and classic Muir find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Katy Kane.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Crochet Dress

vintage 1960s crochet dress

vintage 1960s crochet dress 2 vintage 1960s crochet dress 1

Crochet, which derives from croche, the Middle French word for hook, is a very, very old craft although there is some dispute as to its exact age and place of origin. Fortunately, though, this is an art that has survived centuries and it is once again having a moment in fashion, with crochet pieces parading down both the Spring 2011 and the Fall 2012 runways.

Now if you’re a crafty kind of gal, you can grab yourself a vintage pattern or two on eBay and go to town doing the prescribed hook-overs and single-, double- and triple-crochet combinations to create designs that will look a whole lot like the crochet masterpieces strutting their stuff for Christopher Kane, Edun and Proenza Schouler.

But all the rest of us will have to settle for either new or vintage pieces created by others.

Of course, if you pick up a vintage beauty like today’s VPOD, you won’t feel like you’re settling at all.

This vintage 1960s crochet dress features a mesh-style top with a floral-adorned skirt and does it all in the yummiest shade of turquoise. If you’re shy, you can always have the dress lined but if you’re brave, then you can vary how much skin you want to bare by adjusting your choice of underpinnings.

Either way, it’s a chic crochet find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Mary Moore Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Valentina Beaded Fringe Cape

vintage 1960s valentino beaded fringe cape

Good writers know that the secret to good writing is good editing. And fashionable dressers know that the secret to good dressing is also good editing.

Fortunately, words and dresses can’t get their feelings hurt, which means you can be just as brutal as you like when editing your closet.

Just as a book editor can delete an entire paragraph or chapter with one push of a button, it’s necessary for you to occasionally delete pieces from your closet and send them on to new homes. And just as a book editor doesn’t accept every manuscript that comes his way, you also need to be extra-disciplined about the pieces you allow into your closet.

To give you an example of how strictly the very best people in the fashion business edit, consider this:

Decades and Decades Two, the extremely successful vintage and designer consignment boutiques founded by Cameron Silver, consider over 65,000 pieces for consignment each year.

Wanna guess how many pieces make the cut and are actually accepted by this master curator?

Only 12,000!!!

That’s less than twenty percent. That’s less than two out of ten pieces.

So ask yourself: How might your wardrobe look in five or ten years if you started editing your purchases this strictly?

Of course, this means that not every great piece you spy will make your final cut, but today’s VPOD would certainly make mine.

This vintage 1960s beaded and fringed wool cape by Valentina is simply spectacular! It’s one of those personality-laden finds that will continue to be thrown on a “Keep” pile through many years of spring closet cleanings.

It’s a colorful one-of-a-kind find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Kim Vintage.
