Crochet, which derives from croche, the Middle French word for hook, is a very, very old craft although there is some dispute as to its exact age and place of origin. Fortunately, though, this is an art that has survived centuries and it is once again having a moment in fashion, with crochet pieces parading down both the Spring 2011 and the Fall 2012 runways.

Now if you’re a crafty kind of gal, you can grab yourself a vintage pattern or two on eBay and go to town doing the prescribed hook-overs and single-, double- and triple-crochet combinations to create designs that will look a whole lot like the crochet masterpieces strutting their stuff for Christopher Kane, Edun and Proenza Schouler.

But all the rest of us will have to settle for either new or vintage pieces created by others.

Of course, if you pick up a vintage beauty like today’s VPOD, you won’t feel like you’re settling at all.

This vintage 1960s crochet dress features a mesh-style top with a floral-adorned skirt and does it all in the yummiest shade of turquoise. If you’re shy, you can always have the dress lined but if you’re brave, then you can vary how much skin you want to bare by adjusting your choice of underpinnings.

Either way, it’s a chic crochet find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Mary Moore Vintage.
