VPOD: Vintage 1980s Bill Blass Ruffle Swimsuit

vintage 1980s bill blass ruffle swimsuit

Abercrombie & Fitch stirred up a frenzy this week by offering padded swimwear tops for tweens at their Abercrombie Kids stores.

And in my completely unscientific discussions with mothers recently about this issue, I discovered there are passionate arguments on both sides.

In one corner are moms who believe the idea is totally ridiculous and an attempt to sexualize girls at an even younger age. They’re raging with emotion.

In the other corner are moms who recognize that some girls develop earlier than others and insist that this type of padding can actually make their daughters feel less self-conscious about their changing bodies. They’re so over all the fuss.

And interestingly, one mom pointed out that Sears and Justice have offered padded bikini tops to girls for a few years now without any of this uproar.

Look, I’m all about raising girls to have healthy body images and strong self-esteem. For me, that means regardless of whether a young girl is wearing a padded bikini top or an unpadded bikini top, whether she’s in a tankini or maillot or heck, even skinnydipping, she understands that she is more than her body.

She isn’t ashamed of her body but she also isn’t flaunting or using her body in any way other than to inwardly celebrate the fact that this miracle machine allows her to breathe and walk and play and live life to the fullest each and every day.

She recognizes her body is something to be cared for and respected and honored and that other people’s opinions about her clothing choices are less important than how her own clothing choices make her feel and act.

And now that I have that off my unpadded chest, please let me know your opinion below and then take a look at today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1980s never-worn swimsuit by Bill Blass has a playful, sassy, youthful appeal but it’s strictly for grown-up gals who happen to be feeling a little cha-cha-cha.

What a pretty little find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1940s Hand Knit Sweater Dress

Everyone knows the colors of the American flag are red, white and blue, right?

Don’t be too sure.

Newsweek recently gave the official U.S. citizenship test to 1,000 Americans and discovered some disheartening results. For instance, 29% couldn’t name the Vice-President, 44% couldn’t define the Bill of Rights and 6% couldn’t even find Independence Day on the calendar!

Now I’m no history or civics whiz, but I do believe that each of us has an obligation to understand how our government operates and, increasingly, an obligation to expand that understanding to global affairs as well.

When more Americans can name last year’s American Idol winner than the Vice-President or identify Rachel Zoe’s picture but not Hillary Clinton’s, we are bound to have some serious issues on our hands.

So, just to be clear, the colors of the American flag are red, white and blue, which is why I much prefer the color combo of today’s VPOD when it comes to fashion.

This 1940s hand-knit sweater dress rocks the triple threat of red, white and gray, a striking mix with no danger of recalling Betsy Ross.

It’s a one-off patriotic look for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Great Grandma Agnes.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Bakelite Enamel Necklace

Vintage Bakelite Enamel Figurals Egyptian Necklace

She was Hollywood royalty and a glamour icon both on and off the screen. And now we mourn Elizabeth Taylor, the lovely lady with the legendary lavender eyes.

As pointed out in the LA Times tribute to her extraordinary life, Elizabeth Taylor loved to eat, she loved men and she loved jewels. But perhaps her greatest achievement was her tireless work related to AIDS. Back in 1985, when AIDS was still mostly being talked about in whispers, she chaired the first major AIDS fundraiser and went on to co-found the first national organization devoted to AIDS research.

So while her six-decade career in entertainment will leave behind film performances to be enjoyed by millions, the $270 million that her efforts have raised for AIDS prevention and care leave behind an even greater legacy.

Today’s VPOD pays tribute to Elizabeth Taylor for one of her most well-known performances as Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile.

This vintage Bakelite and enamel necklace and earring set feature images of both Cleopatra and Caesar as well as helmets and horse heads.

It’s a fine find for any Elizabeth Taylor fan who is also a vintage fashionista!

Available at SoBeJeweled.
