VPOD: Vintage 1970s Silk Chiffon Tangerine Evening Gown

vintage 1970s tangerine silk chiffon evening gown

I’m a huge orange fanatic — the round, juicy kind of orange, that is. So I’m a bit sad because the peak season for oranges is coming to an end.

That just means, though, that I’ll have to be more selective when choosing at the Farmer’s Market each week. After all, not all oranges are alike.

Thin-skinned oranges are juicer than the ones with thick skins and medium-sized oranges are sweeter than their smaller and larger cousins. And surprisingly, the actual orange color of the orange says little about its quality. In fact, because oranges can “regreen” when there are blossoms on an orange tree at the same time as fruit, sometimes an orange that’s tinged green will be the sweetest orange of all!

Luckily, orange is enjoying a sweet moment in fashion, too. And with bright colors the name of the game this spring, you just can’t beat the mouthwatering hues of mango, tangerine, and carrot.

I just love this quote by Wassily Kandinsky:

“Orange is red brought nearer to humanity by yellow.”

Plus we know orange shades whet the appetite. Take today’s VPOD for instance.

This vintage 1970s silk chiffon evening gown will have the crowd drooling even before you add on your knock’em-dead accessories.

It’s a chic citrus find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Watercolor Party Dress

Vintage 1950s Watercolor Party Dress

The LA Times ran an interesting article in this past Sunday’s newspaper about the great art collector, Eli Broad. And I’m eagerly waiting for the new Broad Museum on Grand Avenue in Los Angeles to open, so that we can all enjoy 150-200 of the best pieces in his collection which, he admits, cost him somewhere between $200-$400 million to acquire and which are estimated to be worth somewhere near $2 billion today.

But what struck me as a vintage clothing collector was the last quote in the piece, which shared Mr. Broad’s feelings about being a winning bidder for his art at auctions:

“To be a successful bidder means you’re willing to pay more than anyone else in the world. I don’t know if I would call that a success.”

Now surely when you and I try to be the winning bidders on eBay we’re dealing with numbers that have a whole lot less zeroes behind them than the bids Mr. Broad places at art auctions, and yet certainly we can all relate to his take on the matter.

Being a successful bidder can often feel like a double-edged sword. But it’s the only way you will ever be able to enjoy today’s lovely VPOD.

This vintage watercolor party dress from the 1950s is as pretty as many paintings except you can wear it out on the town.

It’s quite an artful masterpiece for a vintage fashionista.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Platform Sandals

vintage 1970s platform sandals

According to a new national poll published in April’s ShopSmart magazine, the average woman owns 17 pairs of shoes but typically only wears three pairs on a regular basis.

Plus it reports that we’re now going “sole” searching in cyberspace at a much higher rate than ever before with about a third of women admitting to online purchases.

In addition, more women than ever — 60% in fact — say they’re willing to tolerate painful footwear for the sake of fashion. Can you ever imagine a man saying he’d sacrifice comfort for fashion? No way! Perhaps that’s why 14% of women also admitted to hiding at least one of their shoe purchases from their spouse or significant other.

Of course, until the pharmaceutical industry comes up with a cure to treat “Shoe Shoppingitis” — which you know it eventually will along with some silly drug name like Louboutinia — the only thing standing between you and today’s VPOD will be will power.

And you’ll need quite a bit of it to resist these vintage 1970s new old stock platform sandals which promise to look simply darling with your short shorts.

They’re a hard-to-resist find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Dorothea’s Closet Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage Gucci Shopping Tote

vintage gucci shopping tote

Talk about extremes.

I’m out of town at a conference and yesterday, while waiting for the doors to open, I read a shocking shopping statistic in USA Today that knocked me off my feet.

According to a Stores magazine survey of over 4,000 consumers, 52% agreed that they couldn’t live without discount shopping for apparel.

What?!?!

Particularly considering the ongoing crisis we’re all following in Japan, I can count the things I can’t live without on one hand: food, water, shelter, and emergency medical care.

That’s it. Internet, cell phones, cable/satellite TV and hair cuts and colors, which were the other items in the survey, are far from necessities.

Considering that my day started with this absurd reflection of our current culture, I was extremely fortunate to have it close with the most inspiring lecture by Wayne Dyer who, by the way, shared with our group that he doesn’t own a computer and has no email address.

Now, if this New York Times bestselling author who has literally transformed millions of lives around the world with his books and messages can survive without a computer, I’m pretty confident that we can all get through the day without visiting a discount shopping site.

So while you may feel an urge to run out and grab today’s VPOD, a fab vintage Gucci shopping tote with a clean leather patch to hold your own monogram, let’s be very clear that grabbing this beauty would satisfy a want, not a need.

It’s a conscious choice for a vintage fashionista!
