VPOD: Vintage Lilli Rubin Wedding Gown and Breaking News

vintage lilli rubin wedding gown

Yesterday, as I was waiting to board my delayed flight in Altanta, a CNN “Breaking News” story on a large overhead monitor caught my attention.

The important “Breaking News?”

Apparently, Kate Middleton was actually seen arriving at her own wedding rehearsal!

THAT’s breaking news?!

Devastating storms in the South. A fire at NASA. Obama releasing his birth certificate. The Royal Wedding and all things related apparently trumps them all.

Short of an earth-shaking calamity that knocks our fair planet from its axis, you can expect coverage of the royal wedding to take top billing from now until long after the “I-do’s.”

And as the world waits with bated dress to finally, FINALLY, discover who’s designed Kate’s gown (and from the way the press is acting you’d think this is most important announcement of the century!), here’s what we do know:

According to WWD, Bruce Oldfield is out of the running. Once the odds-on favorite, he removed himself from the possibles list although he acknowledged that he will be dressing many other guests.

We also know, again according to WWD, that Camilla will be wearing Anna Valentine, the same designer who dressed Camilla for her own nuptials back in 2005.

And, according to a fashion friend who just returned from London on Monday, and who, I might add, is quite disappointed that there won’t be a kiss during the wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey, predicts that Kate will wear sleeves to show respect for the Church and a voluminous gown that won’t get lost among the cavernous architecture of the wedding site.

And that’s pretty much the direct opposite of today’s VPOD.

This vintage Lilli Rubin wedding dress with its spaghetti straps and sleek silhouette is is far less traditional that what we’ll probably see Kate wearing on Friday. But it’s oh-so-pretty for a modern American bride taking her vows outside a place of worship.

And it could just be love at first sight for a bretrothed vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1940s Crab Moonstone Pin and Feeling Crabby

vintage 1940s crab moonstone pin

vintage 1940s crab moonstone pin

Feeling crabby? Not me. Not today. The sun is shining and I’m heading home to visit family tomorrow. But like you, I’ve been known to wake up on the wrong side of the bed occasionally. And if you’re not careful and nip it in the bud that crabby feeling can last all day.

But what’s so great is that we get to control our moods. That’s right. YOU are in charge of your moods.

Look, you can’t control the weather. You can’t control  control interest rates. You can’t control if he’ll love you back. But you can control how you feel at any moment.

Wanna feel crabby all day? Go ahead. But life’s a lot more fun when you’re looking at glasses that are half full. So try these quick mood enhancers the next time you’re in a crabby mood:

* Smile and Laugh. Yep, studies show that changing your expression can change your mood and research has also shown that when you laugh, your body releases neurochemicals that improve your mood. (Four-year-olds smile and laugh about 400 times a day. The average adult?  Only about 14 times a day. Something to think about…)

* Listen to Music. Music can stimulate your brain waves and stimulate your body to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter linked to mood. Plus singing at the top of your lungs when no one can hear you just feels good!

* Exercise. Move that body! You’ll breath deep, sweat out toxins and release endorphins like crazy.

* Cheer Up Someone Else. That’s right. Get out of your own head and make it about someone else. Compliment someone. Thank someone. Let the frazzled mother with three kids and only one item go in front of you at the checkout. Tell that kid in the army uniform that you appreciate his service. It’s hard to stay crabby and irritable when you spread good cheer.

Plus the only time crabby is beautiful is if it looks likes today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1940s crab pin, with its moonstone belly and rhinestones, is featured in Warman’s Costume Jewelry Figurals.

It’s a chic crustacean for a both crabby and not-so-crabby vintage fashionistas!

Available at Decatique Studios.

VPOD: Vintage Paganne Print Maxi Dress and Lynn Dell

vintage paganne black and white print jersey maxi dress

lynn dell fashionista

Think of your style icons. Now ask yourself: do you admire their style or do you admire their stylist’s style?

As more and more celebrities rent their personal style from stylists by the hour or on retainer, it becomes harder and harder to know where someone’s authentic style ends and their stylist’s style begins.

Or take Portia de Rossi, who admits in her book, Unbearable Lightness, that she once “chose” a dress for the red carpet simply because it was the only free dress sent over that fit.

That is not personal style. (Although it’s a pretty common occurrence in Hollywood.)

That’s why I much prefer to take my style cues from authentic fashionistas like Lynn Dell. This 78-year-young style maven is a true inspiration for fashion lovers of any age — and I’d bet a Birkin that she’s never considered employing a stylist. Recently profiled by Ari Cohen on HuffPo, she spouts fashion wisdom like:

“Dress for the theater of your life!”

“Money has nothing to do with style!”

And my personal favorite:

“Fashion says “Me,too!” while Style says “Only me!”

Plus, she admits that her style has become bolder through the years. Which, I think, is a natural result of just knowing yourself better and trusting yourself more.

So if you want to take some cues from this style hero, load up on scarves, hats and jewelry, and don’t be afraid to don a bold black-and-white print like today’s VPOD.

This vintage Paganne maxi dress is far from demure.

Which makes it a noticeable and stylish find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Shop the Third Floor.
