VPOD: Vintage Lilli Rubin Wedding Gown and Breaking News

Yesterday, as I was waiting to board my delayed flight in Altanta, a CNN “Breaking News” story on a large overhead monitor caught my attention.

The important “Breaking News?”

Apparently, Kate Middleton was actually seen arriving at her own wedding rehearsal!

THAT’s breaking news?!

Devastating storms in the South. A fire at NASA. Obama releasing his birth certificate. The Royal Wedding and all things related apparently trumps them all.

Short of an earth-shaking calamity that knocks our fair planet from its axis, you can expect coverage of the royal wedding to take top billing from now until long after the “I-do’s.”

And as the world waits with bated dress to finally, FINALLY, discover who’s designed Kate’s gown (and from the way the press is acting you’d think this is most important announcement of the century!), here’s what we do know:

According to WWD, Bruce Oldfield is out of the running. Once the odds-on favorite, he removed himself from the possibles list although he acknowledged that he will be dressing many other guests.

We also know, again according to WWD, that Camilla will be wearing Anna Valentine, the same designer who dressed Camilla for her own nuptials back in 2005.

And, according to a fashion friend who just returned from London on Monday, and who, I might add, is quite disappointed that there won’t be a kiss during the wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey, predicts that Kate will wear sleeves to show respect for the Church and a voluminous gown that won’t get lost among the cavernous architecture of the wedding site.

And that’s pretty much the direct opposite of today’s VPOD.

This vintage Lilli Rubin wedding dress with its spaghetti straps and sleek silhouette is is far less traditional that what we’ll probably see Kate wearing on Friday. But it’s oh-so-pretty for a modern American bride taking her vows outside a place of worship.

And it could just be love at first sight for a bretrothed vintage fashionista!
