VPOD: Vintage Ungaro Blazer and Wearing Your Heart on Your Sleeve

Vintage Ungaro Silk Jacket

Emotions are powerful, right?

I mean they affect both your thinking and your actions.

And scientists have proven that negative emotions, like fear, anxiety, and anger are actually releasing different chemicals in your body than the happier emotions of love, contentment and acceptance. So it’s no surprise that there is increasing evidence that repressing powerful negative emotions can eventually lead to a whole host of health problems.

Which means it’s more important than ever to “wear your heart on your sleeve.”

Shakespeare’s Othello first coined this expression in 1604 and it’s since become part of our lexicon to describe the importance of expressing emotions openly and freely.

And to refresh our skill at wearing our heart on our sleeve we just have to observe young children.

Ever notice how they’re already experts at this?

You don’t have to guess what they’re feeling in any moment because they make it very clear when they’re angry, frustrated, delighted or sad. Stomping feet, giggles, tears…they haven’t yet learned to suppress their feelings and shut down their honest reactions to people and events.

Of course, giggling uncontrollably at a board meeting or breaking into tears over lunch with your boss probably won’t put you on the partner track in today’s business environment. But that doesn’t mean it’s healthy to seethe for years over a lossed promotion or mope around for a decade over a love gone wrong.

If you need a little extra help getting in touch with your repressed emotions and channeling them in a healthy way into your world, you can try yoga, journaling, boxing, a good therapist…whatever works for you. As Nike says, just do it.

And to celebrate your new-found commitment to looking inward and doing The Work (which Byron Katie calls her method), treat yourself to today’s VPOD.

This vintage silk blazer by Ungaro has glimmering hearts galore–not just on its sleeve.

And it’s a fine find for an emotional vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Party Dress and Thoughts on Beauty

Lots of wise men have advised us to the fact that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Shakespeare, for instance, wrote of it in Love’s Labor Lost in 1588 and wise ol’ Benjamin Franklin included the wisdom in his Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1741.

But one of my favorite quotes about beauty comes from Kevyn Aucoin:

The future will belong to those with open minds and open hearts, who can appreciate beauty in all of its forms.

So while it might be easy to find a spanking new sofa beautiful or admire this year’s “Most Beautiful Woman,” can you find the beauty in an antique rocking chair with peeling paint or the un-botoxed face and shriveled body of a 98-year-old?

After all, as Lao-Tzu teaches, things are only beautiful to us because we have ugly things to compare them to.

But I believe that ugly is just a state of mind.

What if you were to practice seeing the beauty in ALL things? Yes, ALL things.

Find yourself thinking that an insect or painting or dress or person is foul, grotesque, hideous, loathsome, repugnant, and revolting?

Try looking closer, breathing deeper, and opening yourself to a place of non-judgment where you can see and experience the item or person without your brain shouting out a label like beautiful or ugly.

Try this for just one week and see what happens.

Place your awareness on that little voice inside your head that signals its distaste and displeasure about people and things.

Are you surprised to find that it spends waaaaaay more time criticizing than it does appreciating the beauty that passes by your eyes each and every minute?

Now imagine how much more pleasant your days would be if you worked to flip that ratio around!

One place to start is with today’s VPOD.

Surely you can appreciate the vintage beauty in this late 1950s dress by Junior Sophisticates. Done in a linen-like weave with a silk satin sash and lace inserts on its bouffant skirt, it looks cool and refreshing for these oh-so-hot dog days of summer.

And if you’re not in love yet, can you believe this darling dress is under $100?!

That makes it an especially beautiful find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Haskell Necklace and Le Bijou de l’Heure

vintage 1950s miriam haskell aqua and coral glass necklace

vintage 1950s miriam haskell necklace dove clasp

miriam haskell first store

Miriam Haskell opened her first retail boutique in 1926 at the McAlpin Hotel in NYC. Named Le Bijou de l’Heure, which, if my high school French still serves me, roughly translates as “the Jewel of the Hour,” the boutique was filled with her spectacular custom-made creations.

Catering to the best-dressed society women of the day, Miriam attracted many fans including Coco Chanel and later, Lucille Ball, Joan Crawford and the Duchess of Windsor.

Today the company she founded mass-produces jewelry under a private-labeling program for major retailers like Macy’s, Target, Nordstrom and Gap. It’s also the face behind the launches of the jewelry brands Simply Vera by Vera Wang, Kenneth Cole, Betsey Johnson and, most recently, Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Lovers line.

But the company also still produces what it describes as its “crown jewel” Miriam Haskell line which is meticulously hand-made individual bead-by-bead and piece-by-piece just as Miriam Haskell did back in the 1920s.

Which brings us to today’s VPOD, a fantastic vintage 1950s glass bead necklace by Miriam Haskell in my favorite summer color combination of coral and turquoise.

Check out the rare dove clasp.

It’s this type of loving attention to detail that gives a Haskell piece an energy that just doesn’t exist in a mass-produced piece found at your local department store. And yes, it’s this type of intangible that definitely gets factored into a vintage Haskell price tag.

It’s also why a piece like this is worth every penny to a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1920s Beaded Flapper Dress and Love at First Sight

vintage 1920s beaded chiffon flapper dress

Do you believe in Love at First Sight?

Instyle Magazine reported the results of a Unilever Poll that confirmed that 70% of women DO believe in Love at First Sight…with clothing!

Only 54% of women believe in love at first sight with men.

And I totally get it.

I mean, the beating heart, the sweaty palms, the obsessive thinking, the elation. I definitely can feel them for both men and clothes.

And this reaction happens fast — in 1/18th of a second. That’s literally faster than the blink of an eye!

But when you consider the three core components of romantic love — Lust, Attraction and Attachment — well, I’ll bet you’ve felt each of them for an an item or two in your closet at one time or another. And you don’t have to remind these sweethearts to take out the trash!

So go ahead and let yourself fall in love with today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1920s beaded chiffon flapper dress is simply exquisite and could just be The One you’ve been searching for to cherish for a lifetime.

It’s definitely a love-at-first-sight find for a vintage fashionista!
