VPOD: Vintage 1960s Flagstone Print Dress

vintage 1960s flagstone print dress 2vintage 1960s Flagstone Print Dress

As a little girl I might have been known to hum “Someday My Prince Will Come” but now as a big girl, I am much more eager for prints to come. Pucci, Leonard, Bessi. Bring’em on!

But just like a girl has her own unique taste when it comes to princes, we also have our own unique taste when it comes to prints. Some of us don’t like florals. Others think kitschy thematic prints are just plain silly. Colorful swirling geometrics give some gals headaches. You get the picture.

But imagine a closet filled with only solid colors! Boring, right? Prints are one tool to help inject a little life into any wardrobe.

But they need not make you dizzy or knock you off your feet. It’s possible to find prints that are a bit more organic and subdued and today’s VPOD is a perfect example. This 1960s cotton dress is perfect for the office and with a price tag of under $60 is quite affordable for the gal who isn’t yet in a corner office. And I love the way the muted earth shades give the effect of a slate patio.

It’s a different kind of prints charming for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Miss Farfalla Vintage Clothing.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Barkcloth Dress with Art Deco Print

vintage 1960s art deco barkcloth dress

True barkcloth is made from the inner bark of trees and was first processed by the indigenous people of the forested regions of Africa. Without any spinning or weaving, these people were able to create fabric by stripping and soaking bark, beating it with a wooden mallet until paper thin, and then bleaching, dying, painting or printing it.

But the barkcloth we know today isn’t made from bark. Rather it’s a type of specially weaved cotton with a nubby texture that is both reminiscent of the original tree bark fabric and named after it. Originally made in Cretonne, France, modern barkcloth became a home decorating fabric of choice in the US from the 1930s through the 1960s and it also made its way into fashion.

Today’s VPOD features one stunning example that is a rare and exciting find. Because most barkcloth dresses featured Hawaiian or atomic prints, the stained glass, art deco print of this vintage 1960s maxi is both unusual and unexpected.

And with a price tag of about $50, it’s a real steal for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Mexican Sundress

vintage 1970s mexican sundress

vintage 1950x mexican sundress cu

In just two weeks, on May 5, Mexico and America will celebrate Cinco de Mayo. And while Mexico celebrates it as a regional holiday that commemorates their army’s unlikely battle victory over the French in 1862, here in the US it’s not a legal holiday. Of course, we don’t let that little fact stop us from celebrating the culture of our Mexican Americans on that day (or perhaps just using it as an excuse to celebrate, period!).

So there’s still time to grab today’s VPOD for your personal Cinco de Mayo festivities. This vintage 1950s pin tuck & lace dress was crafted in Mexico and is the perfect accompaniment to your margarita. It shows just the barest hint of skin and is a reason to break out (and break in) those new platform sandals you bought for spring.

What a perfecto find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Shrimpton Couture.
