VPOD: Vintage Alfred Shaheen Dress and Jacket

vintage alfred shaheen dress and jacket

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! That’s what Alfred Shaheen did.

When he opened Shaheen’s of Honolulu in 1948, he had to keep a year’s worth of fabric on hand to protect against shipping delays and other unforeseen factors which hampered cash flow. Plus he often found himself settling for whatever fabrics were sent by the textile mills instead of what he had ordered.

So he boldly took matters into his own hands. He built his own equipment, sought out his own textile designers, hired workers to screenprint their designs and was soon producing 60,000 yards of fabric per month.

But not just any ol’ fabric with any ol’ designs in any ol’ colors.

No, no, no. Alfred Shaheen raised the bar!

All colors were applied by hand so they saturated the fabric. Workers had over 1,000 dye colors to choose from. And he refused to do “hash prints or chop suey prints.” Quality was the name of the game.

Perhaps that’s why Alfred Shaheen prints are still so popular today. And while sometimes the style of his dresses and maxi dresses can look dated, that’s definitely not the case with today’s VPOD.

This vintage Alfred Shaheen Asian-print dress and matching jacket could hold its own in any modern office.

It’s a top-notch find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s DVF Wrap Dress

So I was signing up for an online site the other day and the form asked for my age. I selected it from the drop-down box and realized a few minutes later that..hold on…I was actually two years older than I thought I was.

No I’m not getting senile!

It’s just that I pretty much stopped counting or celebrating birthdays a few years ago and so I really don’t pay attention to my age. I think what’s far more important to focus on in life is how you feel.

One very sexy 50-something who seems to agree is Diane von Furstenberg. In an interview with Barbara Hannah Grufferman for her new book, The Best of Everything After 50, she presents herself as a poster child for women over 50 who want to continue to exude confidence and style. But she’s an inspiration for women of all ages when you consider how many times she’s picked herself up, dusted herself off and reinvented herself over the years.

As for fashion, she had only one fashion rule to offer and it applies equally well whether you’re a 20-something or something-other-than-a-20-something:

Be comfortable.

The article reports that according to DVF  “the number-one thing that makes a woman feel strong, attractive, and sexy is being confident, and to feel confident you have to wear clothes that feel good and make you look better.”

Of course, no one makes clothes that do that better than DVF herself.

Her ultra-comfy jersey wrap dress put her on the fashion map when she was just 28 years old and it’s still a fashion favorite.

Today’s VPOD is particularly special since this vintage 1970s version of DVF’s iconic wrap dress just happens to have also been worn by Cybill Shepherd in the iconic film, Taxi Driver.

That makes this VPOD an especially fabulous find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Doily Dress and America Recycles Day

Yesterday was America Recycles Day so here’s a little quiz for you:

What percent of our waste doe we recycle in America?
a. 18%
b. 33%
c. 46%
d. 67%

The correct answer is b. We only recycle 33% of our waste in America, and this pitiful amount doesn’t put us anywhere among the leading recycling countries of the world. In fact, we recycle way less than 10% of our plastic and only a little over 20% of our aluminum!

Certainly part of the problem lies in the lack of recycling programs in many communities but mostly, I think, recycling is a mindset that begins with the original purchase.

For instance, before I buy anything now I find myself paying more attention to the packaging that was used, whether the item is made from recycled materials and if the item is made from recyclable materials.

But the recycling mindset is also a creative one. Before tossing anything in the trash to live out its remaining useful life in a landfill, ask yourself two questions:

1) Is there any other way I can use this?real simple 869 uses for old things

(And you can get plenty of ideas from Real Simple’s 869 Uses for Old Things)

2) Is there anyone else out there who may want this?

Places like Craigslist show plenty of want ads by artists and designers who are looking for everything from old glassware and china to old magazines to outdated electronics to complete their projects.

And don’t be surprised if you take on a recycling mindset and soon find yourself coming up with all sorts of creative ideas on your own. Take today’s VPOD for instance.

This unique creation takes old-fashioned vintage doilies and turns them into a very contemporary fashion statement.

It’s a lovely recycled find for a vintage fashionista!

I received a call from a client this morning who was scouting out Ossie Clark. Seems she had googled and found an old VPOD that featured one of his dresses and fell in love.

Of course, she wasn’t too happy when I told her about all the other women in the world who were also in love with him and what it would cost her to woo one of his creations into her lair.

Of course, if you don’t care about labels and just want Ossie Clark style, then you’ll love today’s VPOD. This 1940s dress in a beautiful rose hue has full sleeves, bobble buttons and puckered elastic waist panels with the un-Ossie-like addition of lovely beading.

At less than $200, it’s a fabulous find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Spanish Moss.

It only took one episode for HBO’s latest drama, Boardwalk Empire, to earn a green-light for a second season. Over 7 million viewers enjoyed the three recent showings of the premiere episode (yes, I was one of them) and critics everywhere are singing its praises:

Sensational!…Addictive!…Captivating!…Smashing!…Brilliant!…Terrific!…Intoxicating!…Stunning!…Genius!…
Perfection!…Smashing!…Breathtaking!…Dazzling!

Of course, all these superlatives could just as easily apply to today’s VPOD and all the fabulous 1920s fashions featured in this period drama. What Mad Men did for fashions of the 1960s, this little gem is sure to do for the Flapper fashions of the 1920s!

If you love fashions from this era, be sure to tune in to see costume designer John Dunn’s work each week. If you want to add something Flapper to your own vintage clothing collection, then grab today’s VPOD.

This flaming red chiffon flapper dress from the 1920s has spectacular beading and stunning style.

It’s a Boardwalk Empire find for a vintage fashionista!
