VPOD: Vintage 1970s Bakelite Enamel Necklace

Vintage Bakelite Enamel Figurals Egyptian Necklace

vintage bakelite enamel egyptian necklace

She was Hollywood royalty and a glamour icon both on and off the screen. And now we mourn Elizabeth Taylor, the lovely lady with the legendary lavender eyes.

As pointed out in the LA Times tribute to her extraordinary life, Elizabeth Taylor loved to eat, she loved men and she loved jewels. But perhaps her greatest achievement was her tireless work related to AIDS. Back in 1985, when AIDS was still mostly being talked about in whispers, she chaired the first major AIDS fundraiser and went on to co-found the first national organization devoted to AIDS research.

So while her six-decade career in entertainment will leave behind film performances to be enjoyed by millions, the $270 million that her efforts have raised for AIDS prevention and care leave behind an even greater legacy.

Today’s VPOD pays tribute to Elizabeth Taylor for one of her most well-known performances as Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile.

This vintage Bakelite and enamel necklace and earring set feature images of both Cleopatra and Caesar as well as helmets and horse heads.

It’s a fine find for any Elizabeth Taylor fan who is also a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Postage Stamp Pins

vintage 1980s postage stamp pins

As the world stares with horror at the devastating images of destruction in Japan, there couldn’t be a more fitting message that the one conveyed on today’s VPOD, a pair of 1980s postage stamp pins.

For Love is the message.

Other than contributing financial assistance, there may be little that many of us can do to directly assist the victims of the terrible earthquake and tsunamis. But each of us can send our love, our thoughts and our prayers to those affected.

And we can remember that now, more than ever,  we truly are a global community.

As Deepack Chopra said in today’s LA TImes:

“What is emerging is that you cannot separate yourself emotionally or in any other way from what is happening anywhere in the world…We need to realize that we are now entangled with everything that happens — everywhere.”

So let’s all share a virtual moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives and remember that we truly are a global community of vintage fashionistas.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Hobe Multi-Stone Nugget Ring

vintage 1970s hobe nugget ring

Unlike most fashion bloggers in America, I won’t be Monday morning quarterbacking all the gowns that walked the Oscar Red Carpet. Instead, I’d like to bring some attention to Joanna Zelman’s article on the Huffington Post celebrating the nominated environmentalists this year.

While many of you may be familiar with Natalie Portman’s eco-shoe line or may have noticed that four out of five of this year’s Oscar-nominated documentaries dealt with environmental issues, you might not know that…

…Colin Firth has two fair-trade cafes and an ecological store in Britian

…Mark Ruffalo has lobbied tirelessly to end fracking (a process to retrieve natural gas from shale)

Dark Swan, 127 Hours, and The Social Network all received EMA Green Seals for being environmentally friendly

I think a few moments of praise, perhaps even a round of applause for these green efforts should be sprinkled in among the heaps of criticism being thrown around this morning about the unmitigated disaster that was last night’s Oscar show.

It reminded me that when you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one.

If you’re going to create a mishmash then stick with jewelry, like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1970s Hobe multi-stone nugget ring somehow captures the magic that turns chaos into beauty.

It’s a praise-worthy find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Kenneth Jay Lane Coral & Turquoise Necklace

vintage 1960s kenneth jay lane coral turquoise necklace

Fake handbags will always be a big No-No in my world but the “Fabulous Fakes” of Kenneth Jay Lane are a big Yes-Yes-YES!

This shoe designer at Christian Dior launched his company in 1963 in New York City. Since then he has amassed a wide celebrity fan base that’s included Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Nancy Reagan along with current collector Gloria Vanderbilt. You may have seen his pieces worn by Paris Hilton, Sarah Jessica Parker and the Duchess of Windsor.

His gift? Making costume jewelry as glamorous (and coveted) as million-dollar pieces, which has slowly pushed auction prices for his early work into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Fortunately, you can grab today’s VPOD, a vintage 1960s Kenneth Jay Lane coral and turquoise necklace, without having to mortgage your house.

Perfect with a minimalist linen shift dress and oh-so-lovely with a crisp white blouse, this beauty is on sale for 50% off!

And if you’ll be anywhere near Palm Beach between now and May 1, be sure to make a stop at the Norton Museum of Art to view the exhibit Fabulous Fakes: The Jewelry of Kenneth Jay Lane.

It’s a must-see for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Miriam Haskell Necklace and an Egyptian Revival

vintage hattie carnegie necklace

When King Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered in 1922 it not only made news in the archaeology world but created a demand for Egyptian influences in architecture, fashion and jewelry. Women wore bracelets and necklaces with snakes, anhks, sphinxes and pharaohs and were even spied in a beaded headdress or two in imitation of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile.

Like all fads in fashion, however, this Egyptian Revival faded until the mid-1970s when King Tut’s tomb went on tour here in the US. Before long, fueled by Tut mania, Egyptian motifs were back once again with Miriam Haskell, The Art Company, and Sarah Coventry among the companies producing 1970s Egyptian Revival lines.

And it makes me wonder if we’re not in for a third Egyptian Revival as we all bear witness to the extraordinary historical events occurring in Egypt. I would certainly welcome it, particularly if it produces more pieces like today’s VPOD.

This vintage Egyptian Revival-style necklace by Miriam Haskell bears shapes and materials that say North Africa without a snake, ankh, sphinx or pharaoh in sight. Instead, hammered gold pieces and thermoplastic tubes in ebony and coral broadcast a sleek, modern aesthetic.

It’s an Egyptian Revival find that’s perfect for a contemporary vintage fashionista!

Available at Easterbelle’s Emporium.
