VPOD: Vintage 1950s Antoine Blanchard Clutch

vintage 1950s antoine blanchard clutch

It’s a good thing that I’m living in a city that has some amazing art museums because it seems the older I become the more interested I become in art. With The Getty Center, LACMA, the MOCA and the Hammer all just a hop, skip and jump from my apartment, I really have no excuse not to indulge my growing interest.

And just like hearing your favorite band live in concert is a totally different experience than listening to their album on your ipod, getting up close and personal with art is a totally different experience than learning about it from books or the internet.

So perhaps it’s no surprise that today’s VPOD caught my interest. This vintage 1950s clutch handbag features a painting that was licensed for use from Antoine Blanchard, a popular impressionist artist most well-known for his Parisian street scenes.

Sure you may never be able to afford one of his paintings since they sell for thousands and thousands of dollars, but you can certainly save up a few twenties to carry this unique little handbag.

It’s a true artistic find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Jen Fitch Style.

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Roses Halter Sundress

The highlight of my week was the purchase of a vintage velvet gown made for Lana Turner. I’m not sure yet what film the actress wore the dress in, but you can imagine my glee when I spied the studio label with “Lana Turner” written clear as day.

Of course, any vintage piece from the 1930s or 1940s in this condition would have value, but that value is often escalated considerably when there is proof that a dress was worn by a celebrity or other historical person.

Then, of course, you have your “as seen in” or “as worn by” pieces. While the celebrity didn’t actually wear the piece that’s for sale, it is identical to a piece worn on a television show, in a movie, on a magazine cover, or on the red carpet.

Today’s VPOD, for instance, is an identical version of the 1950s rose print halter sundress worn by Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. (By the way, note how Patricia Field tied the straps to create a more flattering decolettage for SJP. That is a styling genius at work!)

It’s a sweet little collectible find for a vintage fashionista!

Vintage Braniff Airlines Pucci & Halston Collection Now Available

vintage braniff airlines pucci collection 1

Wow! A 90-piece collection of vintage Braniff uniforms, shoes, luggage and accessories designed by none other than Pucci, Halson and Narducci of Dallas is now available on eBay.

The collection was amassed by a former Braniff flight attendant who flew for over 20 years. And I guess if you or I had to wear a uniform designed by Pucci or Halston, we might actually tuck it away and preserve it, too!

One of the most exciting finds in the collection is the Pucci handbag shown below (between the two luggage pieces). This is a one-of-a-kind prototype. Keep that in mind when you see the asking price for this collection.

Another very collectible piece is that famous Space Bubble hat. Made to look like a space helmet and protect flight attendant’s hair from wind and rain, the bold idea never really caught on. I guess women just didn’t want to look like astronauts! But there are lots of other pieces from Gemini IV, the first Pucci collection in 1965, through Pucci V, the last collection in 1974, that would take a lot of willpower not to work into a modern wardrobe. The leggings and boots, for instance, would be quite fun.

And let’s not forget about the Halston pieces that are in the collection as well. They are a great contrast to the pyschedelic look of Pucci with their earthy tones, simpler designs and printed logo signature “H”‘s.

But before you go digging for your credit card, be aware that this comprehensive collection of Braniff uniforms from 1963 to 1983 won’t come cheap. The current asking price is $250,000, although offers are welcome.

Of course, it won’t cost you a penny to take a peek at all the pieces pictured and read the fabulous history in this eBay listing.

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Leather Jacket with Sequin Panels

vintage 1980s sequin leather jacket

I was paging through the August edition of a fashion magazine yesterday (from back to front as I have a habit of doing), when I stopped on a page that told me that color-block handbags were OUT. And we all know, because Heidi Klum reminds us each week on Project Runway, that when it comes to fashion, “You’re either in, or you’re out!”

So imagine my surprise when just two pages further back, errr…make that two pages further forward due to my backwards reading style, I spy a full-page editorial spread with two color-block pieces by two major designers.

So are they in? Or are they out? No wonder women find fashion confusing!

And I guess this is where Heidi and I have a slight difference of opinion, because my feeling is that great style is always IN whether it’s on the leading edge of a trend or at the end of a trend that is fading into oblivion. And great style can be on its way OUT here in LA while it’s just coming IN to some other parts of the country.

That’s why it’s so important to work on developing your own personal sense of style. Become one of the world’s best-dressed women by looking at fashion magazines for inspiration, not for rules. Because, someplace, somewhere, someone is breaking their fashion rules, looking great, and possibly even starting the next trend.

So when you spy something wonderful like today’s VPOD but vaguely remember reading about how sequins are now OUT, you can follow your own inner fashion sense and snatch it up anyway. Then you can take this vintage 1980s razzle-dazzle leather jacket on a play date with all the other items in your closet and mix up some outfits that make you feel great and start the trend that brings sequins back IN.

Then the cycle of fashion can begin again…

…with a kickstart from this great little find for a vintage fashionista!
