VPOD: Vintage Pauline Trigere Turtle Tunic Blouse

VIntage Pauline Trigere Sea Turtle Tunic Blouse

Oh, that Mother Nature, she’s a tricky one!

For instance, she somehow decided that the temperature of a mama turtle’s nest would determine the sex of her offspring. Which was working out just fine until this whole global warming thing threw a big hot wrench into her plans. Because now, as temperatures are rising, Mother Nature is faced with a marked gender discrepancy among her turtles.

For example, in Florida, Loggerhead sea turtle nests are currently producing 90% females, and, if temperatures rise just one more degree, no more males will be produced there at all! Not such a good thing if female Loggerhead babies want to grow up and breed baby turtles of their own. (And you single women with ticking biological clocks thought you had it bad!)

Perhaps that’s one reason why the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) have declared this the Year of the Turtle. With 50% of freshwater turtles threatened –more than any other animal group — they want to bring attention to the simple things that can be done to keep these creatures, who have been here since the age of the dinosaurs, on the earth a while longer.

Things like tunnels under highways, turtle-safe fishing nets, and protection for turtle nests on beaches can all help. That global warming thing, though, will be a little harder to fix.

So, if you feel for the turtles’ plight, why not don today’s VPOD to stimulate dinner party conversation and drum up support for one of the many turtle conservation organizations.

This vintage 1950s Pauline Trigere tunic blouse features a huge turtle front-and-center and another huge turtle on the back.

It’s a great graphic find for a reptile-lovin’ vintage fashionista.

VPOD: Vintage Alfred Shaheen Dress and Jacket

vintage alfred shaheen dress and jacket

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! That’s what Alfred Shaheen did.

When he opened Shaheen’s of Honolulu in 1948, he had to keep a year’s worth of fabric on hand to protect against shipping delays and other unforeseen factors which hampered cash flow. Plus he often found himself settling for whatever fabrics were sent by the textile mills instead of what he had ordered.

So he boldly took matters into his own hands. He built his own equipment, sought out his own textile designers, hired workers to screenprint their designs and was soon producing 60,000 yards of fabric per month.

But not just any ol’ fabric with any ol’ designs in any ol’ colors.

No, no, no. Alfred Shaheen raised the bar!

All colors were applied by hand so they saturated the fabric. Workers had over 1,000 dye colors to choose from. And he refused to do “hash prints or chop suey prints.” Quality was the name of the game.

Perhaps that’s why Alfred Shaheen prints are still so popular today. And while sometimes the style of his dresses and maxi dresses can look dated, that’s definitely not the case with today’s VPOD.

This vintage Alfred Shaheen Asian-print dress and matching jacket could hold its own in any modern office.

It’s a top-notch find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage North Beach Military Jacket and Military Families Week

vintage 1980s north beach leather military jacket

Back in the seventh grade, I remember being the only person in my class who could correctly spell and define epaulettes. I remember this so clearly because it was the same day that W.B. first noticed me and spontaneously invited me to the Spring Dance.

And while you’d think that a girl who knew her epaulettes would somehow recognize that a career in fashion was in her future, this girl somehow ended up taking a decade-long detour as a CPA!

How could that happen, you wonder?

Well, I blame it on W.B.! His raging male pheromones kept wafting in my direction somehow boggling my brain into thinking CPA instead of FIT.

Lucky for all of us, though, W.B. felt no such distractions from my own feminine wiles. He was hell-bent on becoming an Air Force pilot and today this genius lad is a Colonel developing military strategy with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

And let me tell you, we can all sleep a little easier at night knowing someone of his caliber is willing to devote his life’s work to keeping American safe.

Now I haven’t seen W.B. since graduation, but I hear he has a lovely family of his own. That’s why I was thrilled to learn that today Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will announce a new program called Joining Forces to focus attention on the needs of military families.

To support their effort, The AOL Huffington Post Media Group is declaring this Military Families week. They’ll be running lots of stories to honor and assist military families but while sections like Education, Living, Tech and Health were participating, I saw no mention of the Style section joining the fun.

So since I stand in awe, with both honor and humility, before the men and women who sacrifice so much (voluntarily!) in service to our country, let me take this opportunity to mention some of the non-profits that make it easy for each of us to give back and support our military families. I’m talking about programs like Cell Phones for Soldiers, Operation Shower, Hire Heroes USA, and Wounded Warriors.

And while I feel strongly that we should all show respect and honor to our men and women in uniform, and give them support however we are able, after doing so you may be inspired to adopt a stylish military look all your own.

So take a look at today’s VPOD.

This vintage North Beach Leather military-style jacket is new old stock and gives the traditional military look a twist with bright green suede.

It’s a military marvel for a vintage fashionista!
