vintage 1940s magic carpet blouse

Do you believe in magic?

Not the sleight of hand magic where coins disappear behind ears and pop out of noses or where ladies are sawed in half. I’m talking about the magic of life.

Are you still able to feel a sense of wonder when you see a butterfly or admire the perfection of a rose?

Are you able to feel enchantment when you meet just the right person at just the right time?

Are you fascinated by things like Masaru Emoto’s pictures of water crystals or how that one part in your favorite symphony still makes you tear up every single time?

If you’re the kind of person who isn’t afraid to wonder if perhaps there are greater and grander forces in the universe that we have yet to discover, then you will be delighted with today’s VPOD and it’s whimsical depiction of a bearded man sailing along on his flying carpet over minarets.

This vintage 1940s beaded blouse is a perfect example of why I find vintage clothing so magical.

And it can easily put a spell on any vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Apple Print Dress & The Dirty Dozen

vintage 1960s apple print dress 1

vintage 1960s apple print dress

The Dirty Dozen has a new leader this year.  It seems the apple has replaced celery as the most pesticide-contaminated fruit or vegetable on the Environmental Work Group’s now-famous Watch List.

And considering the USDA’s new My Plate replacement to the food pyramid recommends filling at least half our plates with fruits and vegetables every day, it would be wise to keep this Dirty Dozen list handy.

After all, the list is compiled from data collected by the US Department of Agriculture from fruit and vegetable samples that have already been washed and peeled yet their studies show that eating just five servings of the fruits and vegetables on this list would expose you to 14 pesticides!

So who are the culprits that make up the Dirty Dozen?

That would be apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, nectarines, imported grapes, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, domestic blueberries, lettuce and kale.

And while choosing certified organic versions of these items would certainly be a good idea, I think that with rising food costs across the country, simply encouraging the addition of ANY more fruits and vegetables to a family’s diet is still far more important than encouraging the purchase of higher-priced organic produce.

Yes, an apple a day to keep the doctor away is still good advice…just be sure to wash that apple thoroughly before enjoying it! (And by the way, researchers at Tennessee State University tested diluted vinegar solutions against more expensive veggie washes and found it just as effective.)

So get your fruits and veggies however you can. You may even be inspired to add a few to your closet.

Today’s VPOD is a vintage 1960s secretary dress that at first glance looks polka-dotted but upon closer inspection reveals itself to be apple-dotted!

It’s a fruity little find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Dress & Green Graduations

vintage 1970s flapper inspired dress

greenweaver eco-friendly graduation caps and gowns

As graduates nationwide march across stages at their commencements, I’m thrilled to discover one company that is helping them to do it with green eco-style.

Oak Hall Cap & Gown has found a way to divert over 7 million plastic bottles from landfills with their Greenweaver line of graduation gowns made of 100% post-consumer plastic.

Each eco-friendly gown is made from molten plastic pellets derived from about 23 plastic bottles and the company’s orders have tripled in just the last year.

Surely even more colleges and universities will join the party when they discover that the manufacture of these Greenweaver gowns also reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 54% and saves 52% on energy costs by using thermal energy instead of petroleum. Plus the gowns come in recycled plastic bags and are shipped in recycled cardboard containers.

And get this: they cost about $2 LESS than the old polyester gowns!

In addition, Greenweaver provides collection boxes to college campuses to help encourage recycling of the gowns after their use and makes a donation to each campus’s sustainability program with purchase.

So come on, Vintage Crusaders, help spread the word and, in the meantime, don’t forget to make your own graduation celebrations as green as possible. Here’s ten quick tips:

1. Send evites instead of paper invitations.
2. Use cloth napkins or inexpensive cloth bandannas instead of paper napkins.
3. Rent or borrow silverware, tableware and stemware instead of purchasing disposable items.
4. Or choose compostable dinnerware and utensils.
5. Set up recycling containers as well as trash receptacles.
6. Consider serving prepared drinks from pitchers rather than drinks prepackaged in aluminum cans or plastic bottles.
7. Choose organic or local alcoholic beverages.
8. Support your local farmers by shopping for local, in-season produce and flowers grown locally.
9. Plan a menu heavy on finger-foods which require less plates and utensils.
10. Use natural, recycled or repurposed materials for party decorations.

Then don today’s VPOD to be the greenest hostess-with-the-mostest.

This vintage 1970s frock is a modern take on a 1920s flapper dress and has easy-breezy styling with a fab fringed belt.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Harrods Fringe Top and Trousers

vintage 1960s harrods white fringe top and trousers 2

One of my absolute favorite fashion blogs is Advanced Style by Ari Cohen, which “provides proof from the wise and silver-haired set that personal style advances with age.”

Ari roams the streets of New York in search of stylish female elders and boy-oh-boy, these ladies know how to dress!

Now you all know how much I believe in dressing with authentic style. And in order to embrace your authentic style you absolutely must know yourself inside and out, backwards and forwards, upside and down.  And don’t we all become just a little better at knowing ourselves and a little braver at sharing ourselves with each passing year?

Well, the women profiled by Ari are pros at expressing their authentic style and proof positive that style can and does advance with age.

And when you read their profiles over time you’ll begin to notice recurring themes among the tidbits of wisdom they share like:

* an emphasis on quality over quantity
* a desire to be unique
* a belief that both aging and style are a state of mind

Plus these wise women are well aware that certain pieces transcend both age and time and can be worn by young and old alike. Pieces like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1960s top and trousers from Harrods is a unique way to combine two of this season’s trends: the little white dress and fringe.

And it’s a fashionable choice for any age vintage fashionista!
