VPOD: Vintage Christian Dior Silk Evening Coat & Advice from Bossypants

I laughed my way through chapter after chapter of Tina Fey’s hilarious book, Bossypants, over the weekend. And while she offered some wacky advice and opinions on everything from breastfeeding to management styles, her observations about fashion were right on the money:

“It can’t be said enough. Don’t concern yourself with fashion; stick with simple pieces that flatter your body type.”

And

“A wise friend once told me, ‘Don’t wear what fashion designers tell you to wear. Wear what they wear.’ His point being that most designers, no matter what they throw onto the runways, favor simple, flattering pieces for themselves.”

And while I wouldn’t suggest copying Tina Fey’s self-described look of oversize T-shirts, bike shorts and wrestling shoes, or of copying those celebrities who wear just about anything as long as it’s outlandish enough to get press coverage (and you know who they are!), I would suggest sticking with classics like today’s VPOD.

This vintage Christian Dior silk evening coat with train from the late 1960s to early 1970s promises to look elegant in any decade past, present, or future.

It’s a forever-stylish find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Lanson Print Raincoat & Labeling Fraud

Uh-oh!

A class action lawsuit was filed here in California this week against Kiss My Face and about two dozen other cosmetic manufacturers. Seems it’s a bit of a no-no out here to call your cosmetics organic unless they contain at least 70% organic ingredients.

But that’s not the only place where there’s some labeling hijinks happening.

Earlier this week, I tweeted and facebooked a wonderful article that warns about label switching on vintage clothing garments. While there are only a handful of dishonest vintage sellers prowling the hallways of the worldwide web and playing these unethical games , it pays to be an informed and watchful consumer.

I hope you’ll take the time to read the entire article by Jody Steinman of Couture Allure to really gain some insight into this issue and learn how to protect yourself from this occasional bait-and-switch tactic.

And while you’re over at Couture Allure, be sure to check out today’s VPOD.

I just love this vintage 1960s Lanson raincoat for its quilted taffeta fabric and the ultra-charming print of curved-horn antelopes. And believe me, this baby would in a package on its way to me right now if only it was smaller or my chest was bigger.

But it’s a fantastic find for a better-endowed vintage fashionista!

Available at Couture Allure.

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Dress and June Gloom

vintage 1950s sundress

When I was living in Ohio, like many of you in the middle of country, I thought all those lucky guys and gals in LA soaked up gorgeous rays of sunshine every single day of their lives. So you can imagine my surprise when I moved here in mid-May and stepped off the plane to discover myself smack dab in the midst of May Gray with not a ray of sunshine in sight.

And of course, that would have been fine with me if the gray skies cleared in a few days but nooooo….

I soon discovered that after May Gray comes…dah-dah-da-DUM… June Gloom.

And we’ve been stuck right smack dab in the middle of it for days!

May Gray and June Gloom are weather conditions resulting in cloudy skies and almost foggy-like conditions. Warm desert air about 100 miles east of LA warms up and rises and pulls in and mixes with cool air from the Alaskan current overnight. This resulting cloud layer can be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand feet thick and burns off gradually from east to west as the sun rises, leaving some beach towns hazy until late in the afternoon.

But just because we’re in the midst of June Gloom doesn’t mean we all have to dress gloomy!

Oh no, no, no. I still believe that the best way to pick up your mood during gray days is to don something bright and cheerful like today’s VPOD.

This lovely vintage 1950s sundress in turquoise and teal can easily brighten your mood while you wait for a brighter day. Just don a white jean jacket or sweater until the skies clear and then don your sunscreen.

It’s a delightful mood-enhancing find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Debutante Clothing.
