VPOD: Vintage Lucite Pendant Necklace and Recycling Plastic

vintage lucite pendant necklace

plastic a toxic love story

I’ve only just begun reading Susan Freinkel’s timely book, Plastic—A Toxic Love Story, and I’m already enthralled.

For instance, did you know we’ve produced as much plastic in the past decade as we did in the ENTIRE twentieth century?

But what’s most disturbing is that unlike metal, glass and paper, which can truly be recycled without adding new materials, plastic can’t.

Melting plastic for recycling damages plastic’s polymer bonds. This means new virgin plastic is always added to the mix when recycled plastic is turned into a new product.

Currently, for example, only 30% recycled plastic can be used to make new plastic bags.

So…when you recycle 3 old plastic bags you end up with 10 new plastic bags.

Recycle those 10 plastic bags and you end up with 30 new plastic bags.

And so on. And so on.

So, as Lisa Kaas Boyle points out in her HuffPo article on this issue, recycling plastic goods produces MORE plastic in the world not less!

This isn’t an issue with a quick or easy solution, of course, but it’s one that could really benefit from a big ol’ heap of awareness.

So today, just take note of how many plastic items you use throughout your day and especially note how many get disposed.

Ask yourself if there’s a greener alternative or if you can eliminate the use of that item entirely.

For instance, do you use disposable plastic pens when you could be using a pen that accepts refills? And can you buy those refills eight to a pack instead of in the single size so you can throw away less plastic packaging?

Or can you opt to grab your glass covered casserole to house tonight’s leftovers instead of reaching for a plastic container?

Look, I realize that trying to live a more eco-friendly life can be confusing and sometimes, inconvenient.

I also realize there are big issues at play that the average consumer can’t affect and that will need to be handled by larger organizations, non-profits and governments.

But if each of us would just live our days with a bit more awareness and if each of us could make even one eco-friendly adjustment in our lives every year — yet alone every month or every week — our world would change for the better.

Because I believe that just as plastic begets more plastic, small efforts like these beget more small efforts on our part. And small efforts always seem to beget bigger efforts.

And don’t think for one second that all of this begetting won’t make our planet greener, cleaner and healthier!

Fortunately, someone somewhere made one of those small efforts and held on to today’s VPOD instead of tossing it into the trash, because this vintage lucite necklace has plenty of fashion life left to go.

It’s a colorful fun find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Suede and Silk Dress and Getting Perspective

vintage 1960s suede and silk neiman marcus dress 2

vintage 1960s suede and silk neiman marcus dress

I woke up this morning feeling like I was hit by a truck.

Oh, that’s right, I was.

Yesterday I was rear-ended on the 101 Freeway by a Chevy Trailblazer that pushed me straight into the Prius in front of me.

A car sandwich, let’s call it, with me and my Honda as the center fixings.

And when you realize you’re being hit, you know you can’t do anything but surrender to the moment, but you also don’t know what the outcome’s gonna be.

And that’s a little scary.

Fortunately, in this case, it all worked out okay.

I ended up with the worst of it and that’s just a nasty scar on my clavicle from the seat belt and minor aches and pains. Plus my car has a few boo-boo’s, too.

But I have to tell you, that feeling of complete awareness, of complete aliveness, that happens in the moment you’re  being hit, well, it’s a real wake-up call to what’s important.

Or perhaps, I should say, to what’s not so important.

For instance, I promise that if you’re ever slammed by a pick-up truck you won’t care if you’re wearing the hottest brand of jeans.

And you’ll notice your handbag is going to careen into the dashboard whether it’s a Louis Vuitton or a $9.99 clearance special from Target.

And the moisturizer that costs you $295 a jar isn’t gonna protect your pretty cheekbones any better than the bargain brand if they hit the windshield.

Clearly and quickly, so many of the things that we obsess about and think matter get pushed into their proper perspective.

One of my mentors had a very serious accident while he was in college and discovered in his moment of pure awareness that you’re only gonna care about three things:

Did I live?
Did I love?
Did I matter?

The key is using minor accidents like this — what I think of as taps on the shoulder from the universe — to re-examine priorities and make sure the path you’re taking is the one you want to be on.

But don’t wait for the proverbial truck to hit you to start doing that!

You can stop worrying about silly things like labels and what’s in and what’s out and all that other nonsense right now.

Today’s VPOD, for instance, features a fabulous unlabeled suede and silk dress from Neiman Marcus. It’s just right for Fall for a gal who knows the label on the inside of her dress doesn’t make her look stylish. It’s the energy she brings to the world that makes her dress look stylish.

That’s the different perspective you have when you’re a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1930s Silk Pajamas and One Line a Day Journal

vintage 1930s silk pajamas

one line a day five year memory book page from one line a day five year memory book

There’s no doubt that a good night’s sleep is vital to overall health and well-being. And one fine way to prompt your body that it’s time to slow down and head to dreamland is to create a bedtime ritual.

Every parent knows this is vital to signaling kids that it’s time for bed. The same ritual, performed nightly, seems to train their minds that it’s now sleepytime.

But it works great for us older kids, too.

First, turn off the TV! Then slip into some comfy pajamas like today’s VPOD.

These 1930s pink silk pajamas feature men’s tailoring and wide legs that’ll make you feel oh-so-sophisticated and luxurious.

Then cuddle up with your One Line a Day – Five Year Memory Book.

I’m a huge fan of journaling and suggest it to women all the time, even though many of them look at me like I have ten heads.

“Do you really think I have time to journal at the end of the day!” they seem to say.

Hey, I get it.

My journaling began when I was going through an emotional crisis.

There I was, lamenting the end of my marriage by spewing every emotion known to womanhood onto the blank pages of my journal.

Many pages were tear-stained. Others were practically shredded as I expressed my anger in words that literally tore through the paper. Some days, a page wasn’t enough to contain my wild mind and I’d draw arrows and scribble in the margins of pages two or three days back to complete my crazy ramblings.

But those days didn’t last forever.

I eventually re-entered the Land of the Living and while I tried to continue my new habit of journaling before bed, I’d often discover gaps of empty pages.

Funny how seeing those empty pages always seemed to disappoint me and leave me feeling unsatisfied. It was as if my life didn’t exist on those days when I didn’t taken a moment to memorialize them.

That’s why I love this ingenious journal.

It only has a smidgen of space per day — just enough to jot down that crazy question your kid asked, or the piece of wisdom the old lady on the train imparted to you, or the kind favor your neighbor did, or how proud you are that you finally did ten perfect push-ups.

There’s no pressure to fill up an entire page with words.

And trust me. No matter how exhausted you are at the end of the day you can find the energy to write one or two lines. And that’s all you’ll have room for.

Heck, write just one WORD that sums up your day, if that’s all you have left in you.

Frustrating, awesome, remarkable, grateful.

What’s really nifty is that this little journal cycles around for five years.

So three years from today, when you arrive on the page for August 1, for example, you’ll be able to see at a glance just what you were doing, thinking, or feeling on this same day in your past.

And it’s quite insightful to see your consciousness progressing right before your eyes!

So Silky PJ’s + a private little journal.

They make a great bedtime combo for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Dollhouse Bettie and Barnes and Noble.

Vintage Bathing Beauties – What a Bunch of Skinny Minnys

vintage bathing beauties vogue illustration

If you thought our preoccupation with skinny models was a 21st century obsession, think again.

Just check out this gorgeous illustration of a lovely bevy of bathing beauties, the kind of gals my mom would have labeled as “Skinny Minnys.”

It hails from the January 1, 1935 issue of Vogue!

Don’t you wonder what these ladies would think about our current national obsession with weight and the triple threats of obesity, anorexia and bulimia?

Somehow I don’t think they’d understand why MacDonald’s recenly announced it’s “reformulating” Happy Meals. (“What’s a Happy Meal?” you can almost hear them murmur to each other).

Nor do I think they’d appreciate that Walmart is stepping up and opening stores in 300 “food deserts” so more Americans have access to fresh produce. (“Is there any other kind?” they might ask.)

But they do seem to illustrate their 75-year-old understanding of two very important factors to living a healthy and happy lifestyle.

1. Enjoy the Get Outdoors.

Mother Nature feeds us a magic elixir in all her sunshine and all those breezes. But to get the proper dose of her medicine you have to spend time with her in natural wonders like lakes, beaches, mountains and parks.

2. Surround yourself with some good girlfriends.

Notice I said GOOD girlfriends. Not the catty ones. Not the ones who get all weird and jealous when something good happens for you. Not the kind who try to steal your boyfriend or your husband. Not the ones who constantly need something from you but always seem too busy or too tired or too…something….to lend help or support to you.

No, grab yourself a posse of solid, loyal, good ol’ girls who can cheer you on, lift you up and make you feel better just by spending time with them.

Then pack a healthy picnic lunch, slather on the sunscreen and head to the beach or pool to hang out and enjoy the last few days of July!
