I spoke with my mom and dad yesterday and they asked me if I was going to watch the finals of America’s Got Talent.

Now I have to admit that this show isn’t even on my radar. And with those 28(!) open projects on my Master List that I told you about on Monday, you can bet I don’t spend much time watching TV.

But my parents raved and RAVED about their favorite act, Slihouettes, so I decided to check’em out on Youtube.

And WOW!

As a former dancer and someone who’s choreographed a show or two in my day, I was thoroughly entertained and impressed by the creative spectacle. As a member of the human race, I was truly inspired.

The group is from Denver, Colorado and is comprised of kids aged 3 to 19, many of whom are suffering from life-threatening illnesses and one of whom is going blind.

Their message to all of us?

Don’t let life’s obstacles stop you.

And a second message?

We must continue to fund the arts.

While it’s tempting to cut back on the arts during our current economic challenges, let’s remember that FDR made sure to include the Federal Art Project in his New Deal during the Great Depression. And it was this program that resulted in the creation of many of the significant pieces of public art that we now enjoy around the country.

Plus we shouldn’t forget that when President Lyndon Johnson signed the act creating the National Endowment for the Arts, the act stated:

For it is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves, and to others, the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.

So I encourage you to view the Silhouettes video if you haven’t yet enjoyed this particular form of art.

And if you find yourself inspired by the group’s creative expression, you may want to grab a silhouette all your own.

Today’s VPOD features a real beauty. This c.1900 antique celluloid necklace is loaded with incredible details.

And it’s a striking silhouette for a Vintage Crusader.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Jerry DeNicola Aquarius Zodiac Brooch and Bright Shiny Object Syndrome

Vintage 1960s Jerry DeNicola Aquarius Zodiac Brooch

Hi. My name is Mary and I suffer from Bright Shiny Object Syndrome (BSOS).

Maybe you do, too.

If you’ve ever had trouble focusing, tend to be easily distracted, or move from project-to-project without really completing any of them, then you know what I’m talking about.

You have a great idea, you’re all excited, you start working on it, but then…oh, look!

There’s another Bright Shiny Object over there.

And this new idea or new project suddenly looks a whole lot more exciting than the one you’ve been working on. So you leave the first project behind, unfinished, to go grab the new Bright Shiny Object.

And you work with great enthusiasm on this new Bright Shiny Object until…what’s that you see out of the corner of your eye?

ANOTHER Bright Shiny Object!

Oooh, that one’s pretty, too. Let’s work on THAT!

And so on and so on.

But Bright Shiny Object Syndrome is a real recipe for failure.

Sure it’s easy to be enthusiastic and energized at the beginning of a big goal or new project, but what often separates the super-achievers of the world from those who never quite seem to achieve as much as they’d like is the ability to RESIST all the other Bright Shiny Objects laying around them.

The super-achievers have the ability to hone in on ONE thing and FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Successful.

Now I admit that I’m HORRIBLE at resisting Bright Shiny Objects as evidenced by my prioritized Master Project List with 28 (!) projects that are currently in some stage of development.

YIKES!

So, after Day 1 and Day 2 of an inspiring 4-day seminar this past week, I vowed to resist any and all Bright Shiny Objects until my #1 priority was completed and implemented.

So of course the Universe decided to challenge me.

I met someone and found myself talking about Project #23!

“No! No! No!” blared my internal Bright Shiny Object Warning Siren.

But before I could pay attention to it, someone who had overheard our conversation chimed in with positive feedback about Project #23.

Well, that just made my Bright Shiny Object Warning Siren blare louder!

But, it also set off my Intuition Siren.

And by the time a third person offered assistance and introduced me to a fourth person who could help, I started thinking “How do I turn off this dang siren?!”

But I wasn’t talking about the Bright Shiny Object Warning Siren.

You see, as a wise colleague reminded me “When a Bright Shiny Object GLOWS, it’s okay to pick it up.”

And this particular Bright Shiny Object, my Project #23, was definitely glowing with synchronicity.

So what Bright Shiny Objects stand between you and your biggest dream? Do you have the discipline to ignore them for as long as necessary while you focus on doing only those things that can turn your dream into reality?

Alternatively, have you been ignoring any Bright Shiny Objects on your path that are glowing like supernovas and really could benefit from your attention?

And do you, like me, sometimes find your focus also challenged by other types of distracting Bright Shiny Objects like today’s VPOD?

This vintage 1960s Zodiac brooch by Jerry DeNicola sparkles with style even for gals who weren’t born under the sign of Aquarius.

And it’s a fine Bright Shiny Object for any Vintage Crusader!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Hermes Scarf and The Case for Cursive

vintage 1950s hermes scarf

Most of us already in the work force have vivid memories of practicing cursive handwriting back in elementary school. But love it or hate it, 80% of the states are now phasing it out of the public school curriculum.

What’s replacing it?

Keyboarding skills.

Now as someone who spends hours a day at her computer, I can certainly appreciate the need for students to be able to type quickly and accurately. So why does it sadden me so much to learn cursive may be headed for extinction?

Perhaps because cursive handwriting gives us one more way to express our individuality and creativity on a daily basis.

After all, even though we were all taught the same “rules” for cursive handwriting, each of us somehow managed to add our own twist so that our handwriting is distinctly and uniquely ours.

Somehow choosing a favorite font on the computer just doesn’t have the same charm.

Plus, with its twisty loops and curves, cursive adds a much needed bit of elegance to our lives. And there’s no denying that it’s waaaaay faster than printing when you need to take notes.

So as I gaze at today’s VPOD, a vintage 1950s Hermes scarf with lettering that brings back fond memories of Mrs. Chamberlain drilling us on penmanship at Poplar Street Elementary School, I’m grateful to be a member of the generation that learned this soon-to-be-ancient art.

It’s just one more tool that you can use to express your style when you’re a Vintage Crusader!
