We all like to think that we’re in control when we get dressed for a night out. But sometimes a gal just has to admit that she’s powerless and the dress is the one that’s in charge.

That’s right. The dress!

Take today’s VPOD for instance. This fantastic vintage 1970s jersey dress by Holly Harp dictates that you either have short locks or wear your hair in an up-do. No use pouting, whining, whimpering or arguing about it. This dress will exert its magical powers until you either pick up the scissors and start chopping off your tresses or start bobby-pinning like a madwoman.

After all, the amazing draped back with its dangling beads just must — MUST — be shown-off. And in this case, a gal’s just gotta do what the dress says to do.

Which is perfectly fine for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Greek Halter Dress

The ancient Greeks had a huge impact on Western civilization with influential contributions in the areas of art, science, math and philosophy.

And from the the work on display by so many designers in the Spring 2011 collections, the ancient Greeks are once again inspiring fashion.

In some strange way, we have the astronomy of Aristotle, the geometry of Pythagoras and Euclid, and the science of Archimedes to thank for the beautifully draped dresses and the elegant simplicity that we’ll see plenty of this Spring.

Today’s VPOD is a beautiful example. This vintage 1970s jersey halter gown by Byron of Athens is simple, slinky and sexy.

It may be decades old, but it’s still a modern find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Jersey Print Dress

I spied a Twitter link yesterday that promised hundreds of vintage clothing items for under $100. Well, who could resist that! So I clicked and was gravely disappointed. Yes, there were hundreds of “vintage” clothes under $100 but certainly nothing that suited my style. So I found myself mumbling something I mumble more and more as more and more sellers enter the vintage clothing market: Vintage is about more than old clothes! Just because a garment is twenty years old or older doesn’t mean it has any redeeming qualities that would make a fashionista want to include it in her closet today.

Which is not to say that you can’t find some fabulous vintage clothing online for under $100. Today’s VPOD is a great example. This vintage 1970s jersey dress has a sophisticated print (it makes me think of Koos van den Akker actually). Top it off with a belted cardigan, throw on tights and booties and presto–a pulled-together look on a budget.

It’s a stylish bargain find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Rue St. Denis Vintage Clothing.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Blue Jersey Gown

As I was driving home yesterday, I passed both a movie shoot and a red carpet event. Maybe it was for the launch of a CD or the opening of a nightclub–who knows? The point is, while witnessing these events is exciting for newcomers and tourists, once you’ve lived in LA long enough, celebrity sightings and these types of things are old hat. And it doesn’t take long for your glitzy image of Hollywood to get a little rusty around the edges as the glamour in your head is replaced by harsh reality.

For instance, while most of the country hears “red carpet” and thinks of the immense hullabaloo surrounding the Oscars and Emmys and Golden Globes, the weekly red carpet events out here are more like the one I saw yesterday: a very short red carpet, a few feet of banners taped to a building wall for a backdrop, anywhere from one to a handful of press photographers, and no cheering crowds.

And while it’s fine to harbor a secret yearning to strut down a red carpet, if you think it’s just a silly dream, think again. That’s what a friend of a friend thought. Then she married a guy who’s brother toiled for years and finally hit it big as a producer/director. Now this woman finds herself at entertainment industry get-togethers rubbing shoulders with celebrities she used to see only on the TV in her living room.

So I guess what I’m saying is it’s probably not a bad idea to have at least one knockout, formal gown in your closet that you can grab in a pinch–just in case you get a last minute invite to a big Hollywood gala or simply an event in your own hometown.

Today’s VPOD features a vintage 1970s jersey gown that fits the elusive dressy-but-not-too-dressy category to a T. The stunning royal blue hue and the touch of beading make it just right for a winter event–and at a price point that doesn’t scream “Red Carpet.”

That makes it a fine find for a vintage fashionista!
