Zuburbia VPOW: Vintage 1960s Beaded Cocktail Dress

Vintage 1960s Malcolm Charles Candy Cane Coat

Are you the type who hates to scroll through the zillions of eBay vintage clothing listings and relies instead on your well-crafted search term list? Or are you the type that immediately clicks on the “Designer” section of an online vintage clothing site? If so, you could be missing out on some fabulous pieces from the Land of the Lost Labels.

There are lots of reasons a vintage clothing item could be missing a label. In some cases, the labels were physically removed by owners to avoid customs duties when crossing international borders. In others, labels were never there to begin with because pieces were hand-made by talented seamstresses and not done under a brand name. Or perhaps a label is simply missing due to age and wear. I have certainly found many an item that has had its label literally hanging by a thread.

So it pays to widen your search beyond designer items if you want to find some undiscovered gems. Today’s VPOD is a fine example. This stunning 1960s cocktail dress has impeccable tailoring and workmanship. The beaded bodice perfectly offsets the silk shantung skirt with deep slash pockets. The only thing missing is a designer label and I promise you won’t miss it.

It’s a breathtaking anonymous find for a vintage fashionista.

Available at Zuburbia.com.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Cocktail Chic Dress

While watching Public Enemies last week, I was overcome with the feeling that I just might have been born a decade or two too late. While it seems we reserve glamour for special occasions now, in earlier decades, glamour was woven into the fabric of everyday life. There were no messy hair-dos, ripped jeans, or flip-flops, even though the dire economic circumstances might have forgiven them. No, women took care with their appearance even if they were a coat check girl from the wrong side of the tracks and wore a three-dollar dress like Billie Frechette, Marion Cotillard’s character in Public Enemies.

So I have this theory that the more we women have to exhibit masculine qualities to get ahead in the workplace today, the more we appreciate the opportunity to express our glamorous, feminine side in our personal lives.

That means that while catching a quick drink with friends in jeans and heels is fun, glamming up in an elegant cocktail dress and being escorted to dinner with a gentleman who opens the door, holds your chair and helps with your coat also holds enormous appeal.

Today’s VPOD is a chic example of a cocktail dress from the 1960s that lets you feel like a woman without putting your womanly assets on public display. Though a simple cut with clean lines, the deep turquoise color and the beautiful appliqued flowers and beading add pure elegance and glamour.

It’s true cocktail chic for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Tresor de Vintage.
