VPOD: Vintage 1970s Sheepskin Hat

I attended the screening of Salt last night at LACMA, which was actually the movie’s “real” premiere since the showing at Grauman’s Chinese Theater started an hour later. And while action films aren’t my favorite genre, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this hour-and-a-half of non-stop action.

During the Q&A with the film’s director, Phillip Noyce, we learned that this film about a sleeper Russian agent was originally shopped to Tom Cruise before it turned into a vehicle for Angelina Jolie. And like Tom Cruise, Angelina insisted on doing almost all of her own stunts. So yes, that’s actually her jumping, leaping, tumbling, crashing, slugging and kicking.

Of course, this athletic beauty also manages to look like a lady at times. In one scene, costume designer Sarah Edwards clothes her in a fur-trimmed cape and fur hat that evokes the look of a quintessential Russian spy. And while Evelyn Salt, Angelina Jolie’s character, sports what appears to be chinchilla, you can grab a similar dramatic look on a non-spy salary with today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1970s sheepskin fur hat supplies the style but you’ll have to add the adventure on your own.

It’s a Cold War-inspired find for a vintage fashionista.

Available at Furburger.

VPOD: Vintage 1920s Fortuny Stenciled Gauze Tunic

While I’m not actively seeking a Prince Charming at the moment, I do know that, unlike most princesses who dream of something with 4 C’s in a Tiffany ring box, I’ll know I’ve met my soulmate when he understands I’m more interested in these 4 C’s: Fortuny, Worth, Vionnet and Balenciaga (C standing for couturier, of course).

Yep, just hand me an archive box with one of these masters’ treasures nestled in acid-free tissue paper and I just might squeal “I do” and follow a guy anywhere.

Take today’s VPOD, for instance. This oh-so-rare Fortuny silk gauze tunic from the 1920s features hand stenciling with metallic gold pigments, gorgeous glass beads, and impeccable shoulder pleating that creates a wonderful drape.

Talk about talent! Not only did Fortuny design magnificent garments with one more beautiful than the next, he was a true Renaissance man who bound his own books, created one of the first dimmer switches, invented a boat propeller and at some point in time could call himself a painter, an etcher, a sculptor, an inventor, an architect, and a photographer.

It’s been said he was not a couturier, but a “creative artist of dress.”

And this is one of his oh-so-collectible finds for a vintage fashionista.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Givenchy Evening Gown

Very often, your choice of jewelry is the piece de resistance of your outfit, the finishing touch that makes the whole look special and unique. I know I often find myself in front of the mirror with multiple selections of bracelets and necklaces in a pile nearby, trying one piece, then another, then two together, until finally, finally, I find the right balance.

Of course, if want to eliminate the trial and error method and cut right to the chase, you can always choose a garment that requires little jewelry at all. Something like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1970s silk chiffon evening gown by Givenchy has a fantastic print and a braided silver and black halter that stands in for a statement necklace. Add one cocktail ring and you’re ready to roll.

It’s an elegant find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Vera Scarves and Babe Paley

Vintage scarves are one of the great pleasures in life, don’t you think?

They come in every shape, color and size and you can find one to fit any budget. Whether you choose to tie one around you neck, wrap one around your head, tuck one into a pocket or attach one to your purse, they’re a great way to add color and style to any look.

Of course, if you decide to wrap one around your handbag, you should know that this “trend” is actually decades old. It was started by Barbara “Babe” Paley, one of the Top 20 Socialites of All Time according to New York Magazine as well as a woman who made the best-dressed list fourteen times before finally being inducted into the Fashion Hall of Fame in 1958.

All it took was one photograph of Babe with a scarf tied around her handbag and millions of women around the world followed suit. Today, every time I follow Babe’s lead, I think of this fashion icon who was fashionably dressed from her early days as a Vogue editor in 1940 right up to to her death in 1978.

If you want to channel a little of Babe’s style into your fashion life, then I suggest one of today’s VPODs.

These beautiful scarves are just a few of the more than 200 Vera scarves available at today’s featured site. And it just so happens that, right now, every single one is 20% off!

They’re scrumptious little treats for a vintage fashionista!
