VPOD: Vintage Ferragamo Silk Scarf & Saving the Rainforest

vintage 1980s ferragamo silk scarf

therainforestsite.com

Right now, we are in the middle of the earth’s sixth mass extinction and it’s our own dang fault.

We humans have pumped up the rate of species extinction by a factor of at least 100 and at least one renowned Harvard biologist, E.O. Wilson, predicts that within the next twenty years, we’ll have become so good at increasing the rate of extinction that the factor could jump as high as 10,000!

Plus right now, there is a fight for life going on in Ecuador, in the most biodiverse place on the planet.

As reported by Johann Hari, the oil beneath this lush 4,000 square miles of rainforest holds oil worth about $7 billion. And in the deal of the century, Ecuador’s government has agreed to forgo drilling and keep the rainforest standing if the world pays just $3.5 billion.

What a bargain!

No country has ever made a generous offer like this or even considered proposing an offer where they agree to give up significantly higher profits in order to preserve the rainforest.

Now the question is whether the world will respond.

If Ecuador doesn’t receive at least $100 million by the end of this year, the deal is off and digging and destruction of the rainforest will begin.

Now I’m guessing none of you readers have $3.5 billion tucked away to step up and save these 4,000 acres, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to help.

Just one click a day at The Rain Forest Site will preserve 11.4 square feet of rainforest habitat somewhere in the world without costing you a penny.

And I can’t think of a better group of gals to help save this planet!

After all, as vintage fashionistas we already have a preservation spirit. Just imagine if we took that spirit and used it to save more than clothes!

Certainly the actual rainforest is even more worthy of rescue than today’s VPOD, which, I’m sure you’ll agree, deserved to be intercepted before it ended up in a landfill along with the other two QUADRILLION pounds of clothing we Americans discard each year!

This vintage Ferragamo silk scarf from the late 1980s or early 1990s fittingly features endangered jaguars hiding out in the jungle and their eyes are just pleading for us to help.

It’s a heart-wrenching reminder for an eco-conscious vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1990s Moschino Fruit Print Dress

vintage moschino fruit print dress

Way back in 1931, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson wrote a song called “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries” with lyrics that preached:

Life is just a bowl of cherries
Don’t make it serious.
Life’s too mysterious.

But there’s no denying that there are some serious things happening in our world right now!

From uprisings on the other side of the globe to devastating storm destruction here at home, sometimes life seems nothing like a bowl of cherries. And one might wonder if there’s any underlying meaning behind it all (although I’d like to point out that the End of the World didn’t exactly happen at the date and time predicted last week).

But the lyrics also remind us:

The sweet things in life
To you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you’ve never owned?

Small consolation to those good folks grieving over their losses from the mighty tornadoes. But a good lesson for those of us waking up today with roofs over our heads.

Maybe we should all try thinking of ourselves not as the owners of anything, but as stewards of everything!

Can you imagine the mindshift this might cause?

You would realize that anything and everything has only been placed in your care for a limited amount of time. It would change how you handle objects and how you treat people. And it would help you understand that even the little things — like turning off the water when you brush your teeth, for instance — can and does make a difference in the world.

But good ol’ Lew Brown and Ray Henderson weren’t done yet. They still had one more observation to share:

You work, you save, you worry so,
But you can’t take your dough when you go, go, go.

Which means that each of us should enjoy every day, every moment, every item to its fullest while we have the opportunity, and that includes today’s VPOD.

Fashion often takes its cues from interior design (and vice versa) and right now fruit prints are everywhere — on sheets, wallpaper, and all types of housewares. They’ve also cropped up in fashion which is serving a veritable fruit salad of delights from the likes of Prada and Stella McCartney.

Grab your own juicy fun with this vintage 1990s dress by Moschino that combines whimsical polka dots with bold fruit appliques of watermelon, cherries, lemon and orange.

It’s a sweet summer find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Chanel 2.55 Bag Charm Necklace

vintage chanel 2.55 bag charm necklace

vintage chanel 2.55 bag necklace

A lot of ladies know that the famous Chanel 2.55 handbag got its name because it was created in February 1955. But did you know that Coco Chanel designed it with an inner zippered pocket beneath the flap so she had a place to conceal her love letters?

Or that today Chanel, along with Hermes and Louis Vuitton, is among the few luxury craftsmen that still make their own handbags. For instance, as Linda Grant points out in A Thoughtful Dresser, manufacturers can legally have their bags made in China, attach a handle in Europe and label them MADE IN ITALY. And they do!

That’s why so many women still crave the authentic workmanship and cachet of a Chanel bag created some 56 years ago. Of course, if your budget doesn’t allow for a new or vintage Chanel 2.55 handbag, you can satisfy your craving with today’s VPOD instead.

This vintage Chanel necklace bears a lovely 2.55 handbag charm (though it does lack the space for your love letters).

But no worries. It’s still a delightful find for a vintage fashionista!
