VPOD: Vintage Pierre Cardin Beaded Evening Bags and Finding Vintage

vintage pierre cardin beaded handbag

Earlier this week I was blessed to share a stimulating conversation with Mark Levy, the brilliant founder of Levy Innovation, who has been described as “a positioning guru extraordinaire,” “a Superman of the mind,” and “a horse whisperer for writers and thinkers.”

With accolades like that you might correctly surmise that our talk included phrases like externalized thinking and thought leadership but, surprisingly, Mark and I also mulled over the origin of the cape, its use by both men and women, and yes, even its association with superheros.

Then Mark recounted a story about a time he was speaking at an event and was introduced to a client’s brother who just happened to be a vintage clothing dealer.

Well, Mark thought this was a fascinating profession and starting asking the man questions about his job. And it didn’t take long before he hit the taboo question that every vintage clothing dealer dreads:

So, where do you find your stuff?

But this dealer handled the question with extraordinary style and grace:

Sorry, I’d love to share but that’s a trade secret.

Bingo!

You see, as Mark quickly realized, asking vintage dealers to reveal their product sources is like expecting magicians to reveal the secrets behind their magic tricks.

And with quality vintage becoming harder and harder to find, you can bet that vintage dealers are guarding their sources with the same zeal that Coke uses to guard its secret soft drink recipe.

So while I’m not gonna share my own favorite out-of-the-box people and places that I’ve used to source great vintage myself, I will share a super-secret weapon that may sound a bit woo-woo but still works like a charm.

You see, I believe that the dealers with the best stock don’t always find great vintage as much as they ATTRACT great vintage.

Once you acknowledge that our world is made of energy, you soon realize that setting an intention to discover great vintage and then exhibiting gratefulness when it arrives seems to beget more great vintage.

At least that’s what seems to happen in my world. And I’m always amazed and delighted when the universe provides just what I’ve asked for.

For instance, if I have a designer on my mind, I’ll often discover one of their pieces on my next trip to a thrift store or flea market.

Or I’ll be thinking about something I’d like to acquire and then open an email announcing an auction that surprise, surprise, has that exact piece on the auction block.

Or I’ll bump into someone who knows someone who knows someone looking to sell what they call old clothes but what I think of as a vintage collection.

Which brings us to today’s VPODs. Both of these lovely micro-beaded vintage evening bags hail from a series designed by Pierre Cardin.

The bottom golden version is from my own collection, discovered at last fall’s Vintage Expo in Santa Monica. Since it’s one of my favorite pieces I won’t be parting with it anytime soon.

But you can grab the top version done in primary colors for your very own. And while you’re welcome to inquire with the dealer where they discovered it, don’t be surprised if they choose not to tell.

Of course, whatever its path to you, it’s a beautiful gem for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Chic Antiques. | Discovered at TheFind.com.

Loving It: You Can’t Fake Fashion

you can't fake fashion tote

libertine you can't fake fashion tote marchesa you can't fake fashion tote

rodarte you can't fake fashion tote theory you can't fake fashion tote

If, like moi, you popped on over to eBay’s You Can’t Fake Fashion Sale this morning to scoop up one of the 50 delicious tote bags custom-designed by top fashion designers, you soon discovered that — BLINK — they were already all sold out.

Don’t despair!

The original You Can’t Fake Fashion tote is still available for a measly $35 and a Vintage Crusader with a mere ounce of creativity can take a gander here at the 50 bags designed by fashion’s greats and do a wee bit of customizing all her own.

Considering this collaboration between eBay and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) was designed to help fight counterfeits and celebrate original design, I happen to think this might just result in the best tote bag of all. One that is authentically yours!

So while I am NOT advocating that you copy any of the designers’ bags (heaven forbid!), I am suggesting that you have the power to summon your own inner fashion designer muse and dip-dye like Theory, illustrate like Rodarte, embroider like Marchesa or iron-on transfer like Libertine in a way that would truly demonstrate your personal belief that YOU CAN’T FAKE FASHION and seal your commitment to having no counterfeits in your closet.

And that’s one fine weekend project for a creative vintage fashionista!

Tote available at eBay for a limited time.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Ossie Clark Maxi Dress and Mainstream Vintage

In a font size usually reserved for the death of terrorists like Osama bin Laden or what one might assume will be used to declare a cure for cancer, yesterday’s LA Times Image section proclaimed Vintage as the niche trend that has gone mainstream.

The first clue? That large retailers are appropriating the trend for their own commercial advantage.

Lucky Jeans and J. Crew were singled out as just two of the retailers who are capitalizing on the rising popularity of vintage clothes. But good luck finding any actual vintage clothes in either of their stores!

With Urban Outfitters mixing a few authentic vintage pieces among their new stock, and thrift stores like Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange being called vintage when they’re really resale shops, the move of vintage onto Main Street has just blurred the definition of vintage more than ever.

Now I’m all for choosing secondhand, consigned, used, vintage, or antique clothes whenever possible. It’s the responsible green choice and it will often leave you with more dollar bills in your pocketbook (or a larger credit limit remaining on your Visa or Mastercard).

But I must say I particularly liked this proposition put forth by Jennifer Oldham in her LA Times article Old, New or Both?:

With the “vintage” label becoming more ubiquitous, designers, clothing dealers and retailers may find they need a new term to describe clothing that truly is several decades old and made with fabrics, handwork, and other processes that are now too expensive to replicate.

Please join me in a collective “Amen!”

Yes, yes, YES, we need a new term for authentic vintage but what shall this new term be?  Any ideas ladies?  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below, or on Facebook or Twitter.

Because responding to a compliment on your dress and saying “It’s vintage” when it’s actually vintage-inspired or five years old just doesn’t measure up to responding “It’s vintage” when you’re wearing an authentic treasure like today’s VPOD.

This honest-to-goodness vintage 1970s dress by Ossie Clark for Radley is oh-so-lovely and features the outstanding fabric and craftsmanship that drew us early-adopting Vintage Crusaders to the wide and wonderful world of vintage to begin with.

It hails from Lily Allen and Sarah Owen’s website which also offers lovely vintage-inspired dresses for when you want a vintage look but just can’t find the right piece in your size to fit the occasion. But these vintage-inspired pieces are clearly offered in a separate section of the website just to make sure there’s no confusion with the authentic vintage goods, like today’s little Ossie.

Make no mistake. This baby is a real-deal find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Lucy in Disguise.
