VPOD: Vintage Yves Saint Laurent Music Print Suit

Vintage yves saint laurent ysl suit

The first examples of musical notations were found on clay tablets in Mesopotamia around 1800 BC and music’s come quite a long way since then. I’m sure the ancients who carved those tablets could never have imagined someone like Lady Gaga playing their notes! But whether you can tell an octave from a clef doesn’t really matter because, as I was reminded by the Kiki Dee Band in 1974, “I got the music in me.”

Their hit song reminds me that if

Something gets in my way I go around it

Don’t let life get me down

Gonna take it the way that I found it

I’ve got the music in me

Kind of a nice approach to life, don’t you think? It’s a reminder that life never gives us more than we can handle and there is always someone out there  dealing with an even greater problem than we’re experiencing. It helps keep it all in perspective.

But on good days, of course, it can sometimes be hard to keep your music inside since you just want to share it with the world. And that’s when you need today’s VPOD. This vintage suit by Yves Saint Laurent lets you wear your music on your sleeve. It’s a powerful music and fashion statement that’s softened just a bit by the ruffled peplum and shawl collar.

And it sure hits all the right notes for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Chanel Coat Suit

It used to be that when little girls learned their ABCs, they identified simple one-syllable words like ant, boat and coat. Not anymore! Seems the fashion bug is catching girls at younger and younger ages so that many teen girls today can now correctly pronounce (and spell!) Alaia, Balenciaga and, of course, Chanel–the Holy Grail.

While little girls might have once dreamed of castles and princes who would ride to their rescue, the new fairy tale involves gargantuan closets, personal stylists and hangers that hold beauties like today’s VPOD.

This 1950s outfit by Chanel will tickle you pink (although cherry, tangerine, white and caramel help to round out the boucle tweed). It includes a pleated skirt but the piece de resistance is the fabulous coat with its patch pockets and plenty of decorative, and functional, buttons.

It’s a fashion dream come true for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Lillia Nn Caramel Chic Suit

Mmmm, luscious, gooey, chewy caramel–what’s not to love?! Well, since I completely eliminated corn syrup from my diet years ago, and corn syrup is an ingredient in just about every caramel recipe out there, I don’t often get to indulge my sweet tooth. And perhaps that explains why I’m so drawn to luscious caramel shades in fashion.

Take today’s VPOD for instance. This chic vintage Lilli Ann suit is made from beautiful caramel-colored fabric that was loomed in Paris. Although it’s decades old, the lovely pleating on the jacket along with the belted waist looks very 2009. And any Lilli fan knows that you can’t beat the exquisite tailoring that comes with this label.

This is a pure caramel chic for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Mad for Plaid Patrick Kelly Suit

When purchasing vintage clothing, I abide by the theory that you should follow your heart, not your head. You should buy what you love, what makes your heart skip a beat and what gives you that giddy feeling you get when you think you’ve found “the one.” But it is okay to pay a little attention to the voice in your head. Particularly the one that advises you that, though you might not be purchasing this fab little outfit for future investment, it’s still nice to know that it’s from the first collection of the first American designer ever admitted to the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

Early pieces from first and last collections of designers are always a good starting point for collections. So the fact that this adorable plaid suit from Patrick Kelly’s first collection in 1988 happens to be a perfect pairing for this season’s leggings and booties is just icing on the cake.

It’s a mad for plaid collectible find for a vintage fashionista!
