VPOD: Vintage 1966 Scaasi Oscar Gown for Mitzi Gaynor

A September 2010 Los Angeles magazine poll reports that 19% of shoppers admitted to buying an item because a celebrity wore it. More interesting is that the same poll showed that 24% of sales clerks have LIED about telling a customer that a celebrity bought an item just to sell it!

Don’t get caught in this trap.

Learn what you like to wear. Discover what looks good on you. Listen to that tiny voice inside that will always guide you toward your best wardrobe choices.

Dressing authentically is what makes you cool, hip, chic and sophisticated. Dressing like a celebrity just because you think they’re cool…well, that’s plain ol’ imitation.

And consider this: Many, many celebrities don’t even dress themselves! They rely on stylists to tell them what to wear where and stylists are constantly being wooed and influenced by the fashion industry.

Of course, there are times when dressing like a celebrity makes sense.

If you’re building a vintage clothing collection, clothes worn by celebrities, especially at famous events like the Oscars, can be valuable investments.

Take today’s VPOD for instance. This stunning custom gown by Arnold Scaasi was worn by Mitzy Gaynor to the 1966 Oscars. The pink silk and tulle are embellished with sequins, paillettes and iridescent baubles that dazzle and shine.

Today’s value for this magnificent creation?

A cool $13,500.

What a gorgeous celebrity-owned find for a hard-core collector who just happens to be a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Leather Jacket with Sequin Panels

vintage 1980s sequin leather jacket

I was paging through the August edition of a fashion magazine yesterday (from back to front as I have a habit of doing), when I stopped on a page that told me that color-block handbags were OUT. And we all know, because Heidi Klum reminds us each week on Project Runway, that when it comes to fashion, “You’re either in, or you’re out!”

So imagine my surprise when just two pages further back, errr…make that two pages further forward due to my backwards reading style, I spy a full-page editorial spread with two color-block pieces by two major designers.

So are they in? Or are they out? No wonder women find fashion confusing!

And I guess this is where Heidi and I have a slight difference of opinion, because my feeling is that great style is always IN whether it’s on the leading edge of a trend or at the end of a trend that is fading into oblivion. And great style can be on its way OUT here in LA while it’s just coming IN to some other parts of the country.

That’s why it’s so important to work on developing your own personal sense of style. Become one of the world’s best-dressed women by looking at fashion magazines for inspiration, not for rules. Because, someplace, somewhere, someone is breaking their fashion rules, looking great, and possibly even starting the next trend.

So when you spy something wonderful like today’s VPOD but vaguely remember reading about how sequins are now OUT, you can follow your own inner fashion sense and snatch it up anyway. Then you can take this vintage 1980s razzle-dazzle leather jacket on a play date with all the other items in your closet and mix up some outfits that make you feel great and start the trend that brings sequins back IN.

Then the cycle of fashion can begin again…

…with a kickstart from this great little find for a vintage fashionista!

“That’s a wrap!” While this phrase once belonged only to Hollywood, signifying the end of filming on a movie set, it’s since worked it’s way into the lexicon and can be used to signify the end to…well, just about anything.

So next time you’re on the hunt for that perfect statement piece for your wardrobe, logging miles and miles leap-frogging from boutique to boutique, or getting bleary-eyed after hours and hours of trolling websites, when you finally land on something like today’s VPOD, you can exclaim with delight, “That’s a wrap!”

And this vintage 1980s wrap skirt by Yves Saint Laurent can truly make you feel like you’ve found gold at the end of a rainbow. It’s a super-sexy mini length in luscious suede with over-sized gold sequins that really make it dazzle.

What a fabulous find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Midnight Magic – 1960s Black Sequin Coat

While a closet the size of a small studio apartment is a pleasant dream, the reality for most fashionistas is that they have waaaaaay too little space. So while it makes sense to “double-up” on certain purchases–jeans that fit perfectly, for example–unless you are out on the town every night of the week, one fantastic evening coat and one fabulous little black dress can see you through a whole year of dressy events.

Today’s VPOD features a black sequin coat from the 1960s that can take that coveted place in your closet. The slim cut, bracelet-length sleeves, and nehru collar give a contemporary feel that can head to the corner club for cocktails but can hold its own with diamonds and champagne, too.

It’s a bit of midnight magic for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Season of Sequins Sweater

‘Tis the season for sequins, ladies. And these little dazzlers aren’t just for evening or holidays anymore. This fall they’re popping up everywhere and can absolutely be worn during the day. But to avoid looking like a Las Vegas showgirl, you might want to keep a few tips in mind:

* Dress ’em down — Make one sparkly item your focal point and pair it with something more casual. Think a sequin tunic with denim jeans and flats, or a sequin cardigan with menswear trousers and a plain tee.

* Choose matte accessories — Sequins add enough shimmer and shine to an outfit so make sure your accessories–boots, bracelets, bags–have matte finishes.

* Keep shapes casual and uncomplicated — For day, sequins fare best on simple shapes like classic tees, shifts and cardigans.

Today’s VPOD is a perfect choice for sequined day wear. This 1960s vintage wool cardigan sweater has white sequins galore with pale blue, yellow and aqua sequins making up the geometric trim. And imagine, this dazzling delight is under $50!

That makes it a surefire find for a vintage fashionista!
