VPOD: Vintage 1980s Gianni Versace Tassel Leather Jacket to Celebrate Versace Coming to H&M

vintage 1980s gianni versace tassel leather jacket

Ladies, start your engines and mark your calendars so you can race on over to H&M on November 17th to grab some goodies from the Versace collection!

Women’s Wear Daily and The Telegraph are reporting that Versace has come on board for H&M’s latest designer collaboration. That means this November you’ll be able to find Versace silk and studded leather dresses along with high heels and costume jewelry, plus you’ll be able to snag a little something for the man in your life from the menswear collection and a little something to jazz up your abode from the homewear collection.

And while we may never know what caused Donatella, who in the past has refused such diffusion line offers, to suddenly change her mind, I’m sure we’ll see tons of Versace fans scratching their heads all the way to the checkout.

Of course, if you’re a non-vegan and you prefer to lead a more sustainable fashion life, then you may want to let those crowds battle it out in November and just grab today’s VPOD instead.

This vintage 1980s Gianni Versace tassel leather jacket is buttery soft and oh-so-yummy.

And it’s the real deal for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Jennifer Kobrin.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Lanson Print Raincoat & Labeling Fraud

Uh-oh!

A class action lawsuit was filed here in California this week against Kiss My Face and about two dozen other cosmetic manufacturers. Seems it’s a bit of a no-no out here to call your cosmetics organic unless they contain at least 70% organic ingredients.

But that’s not the only place where there’s some labeling hijinks happening.

Earlier this week, I tweeted and facebooked a wonderful article that warns about label switching on vintage clothing garments. While there are only a handful of dishonest vintage sellers prowling the hallways of the worldwide web and playing these unethical games , it pays to be an informed and watchful consumer.

I hope you’ll take the time to read the entire article by Jody Steinman of Couture Allure to really gain some insight into this issue and learn how to protect yourself from this occasional bait-and-switch tactic.

And while you’re over at Couture Allure, be sure to check out today’s VPOD.

I just love this vintage 1960s Lanson raincoat for its quilted taffeta fabric and the ultra-charming print of curved-horn antelopes. And believe me, this baby would in a package on its way to me right now if only it was smaller or my chest was bigger.

But it’s a fantastic find for a better-endowed vintage fashionista!

Available at Couture Allure.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Lilli Ann Black and White Coat Set

photo harpers bazaar july 2011

After this Spring’s bold colors, I suppose it’s no surprise that good ol’ black and white is coming on strong for Fall. The July issue of Harper’s Bazaar exclaims:

“Basic and bold go hand in hand this season with updated interpretations of classic black and white.

Updated, indeed! It seems to me that today’s VPOD, a vintage 1970s Lilli Ann coat and dress set, could sneak in quite nicely between the interpretations of Pedro Lourenco and Narciso Rodriguez shown in the middle of the first row of Harper’s photo collage above.

And to think some ladies believe all vintage is outdated!

As for me, I’d make this vintage number do double-duty by never wearing the two pieces together. That smashing coat would be worn over my own black slacks or skirts. And the ho-hum sheath dress? Why not pizzazz that puppy up with some trim or silk screening on the skirt OR some beading or embroidery on the bodice to create your own one-of-a-kind design.

Yes, there’s no limit to the imaginings of us vintage fashionistas!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Tapestry Coat with Fur Trim

vintage 1960s tapestry coat with fox fur trim

Every time I feature a vintage fur item here on this site, it always generates controversy. And that’s to be expected since the use of fur in fashion is a very divisive issue.

And while I respect everyone’s right to an opinion, I have to believe that everyone’s email writing efforts would be better served by being less concerned about the animals that were sacrificed for fashion 50 years ago and by being more concerned about the current animal cruelty issues that exist today.

For instance, Camilla Fox, Executive Director of Project Coyote, reports on HuffPo that her organization has joined with the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Animal Welfare Institute to file suit against the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) because they decided to waive state permit requirements and allow a controversial coyote and fox penning facility.

“Penning” allows packs of domesticated dogs into a pen to chase and kill a captive fox or coyote for sport. And that’s describing what happens mildly. Sadistic? You bet. But it’s a legal practice in at least 19 states!

If you’re outraged by the thought of this practice existing in our 2011 world, you can shout your “NO” loud and clear by commenting on the INRC’s website until May 18th.

And, as always, if I haven’t yet convinced you to forego fur in your personal fashion world, please choose a vintage item like today’s VPOD over new.

This vintage 1960s tapestry coat has plush arctic fox cuffs and collar.

And it’s a much more ethical choice for a fur-wearing vintage fashionista.

Available at Bustown Modern.

VPOD: Vintage Count Romi Raincoat

vintage count romi raincoat

Certainly we’ve all heard the expression April Showers Bring May Flowers. And while it’s tempting to take the expression quite literally, it’s far more enriching to ponder its deeper meaning: that sometimes you have to experience something unpleasant in order to experience something better.

Whether that’s sweating through a cardio class to make sure you continue to fit into your favorite jeans, trading a year of weekends for a degree that will earn you a promotion at work, or renting your current abode with its miniscule closet long enough to ensure you can make a full 20% deposit on your first home, sometimes you just have to keep your eye on the prize.

Fortunately, today’s VPOD will take you through actual April showers in style and won’t cause too much pain in your pocketbook.

This vintage raincoat by Count Romi has a bold wallpaper print that is completely unexpected for a piece of raingear and is sure to dazzle in both drizzles and downpours alike.

It’s a fine April find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Item Vintage.
