VPOD: Vintage 1940s Hermes Blazer

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear Hermes is scarves and handbags, so if you had shown me a picture of today’s VPOD and asked me to name the label, well, Hermes wouldn’t be the first one to come to mind. But this vintage 1940s blazer does indeed bear an Hermes Sport label.

And while I initially thought that this blazer was adorable from the front, let’s just say that I squealed with delight when I spied what they did with the back. While I’m sure this unusual back cutaway was a practical design choice decades ago (that just served to make cycling or riding easier), today it’s simply a striking and pleasantly unexpected surprise.

Of course, if the near $3500 price tag keeps you from snagging this little beauty for yourself, I’m sure a skilled tailor could manage something similar with one of your old blazers for a mere smidgen of the cost. I think it’s a smashing upcycled vintage idea, don’t you?

And that makes it an inspiring find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Heavenly Hermes Dress

While Hermes is certainly well-known for their luxurious silk scarves and their fantabulous leather goods, this French luxury house has also produced sportswear since the 1920s. And like everything they craft, the quality and attention to detail is impeccable.

And they craft so many beautiful things!

Take a peek at their website someday. I just love the way they integrate the whimsical illustrations with their beautiful products–everything from ash trays to playing cards, blankets to watches, gardening tools to dominoes. And while one must always be super careful of fakes when seeking out luxury labels, there are still tried and true authentic treasures to be found on sites like eBay.

Like today’s VPOD for instance. This 1970s vintage Hermes silk wrap dress features a swarm of butterflies and a whole of style.

It’s a heavenly Hermes find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at eBay.

VPOD: Vintage Hermes Handbag: The Scarlet Letter

I’ve often joked that I’ll know when I’ve met my soulmate because he’ll propose with a vintage Birkin bag and not a diamond engagement ring. And if, like moi, you love all things Hermes, then you’ll thoroughly enjoy the madcap adventures of Michael Tonello in his memoir Bringing Home the Birkin: My Life in Hot Pursuit of the World’s Most Coveted Handbag.

Then, when you’re salivating for something Hermes to call your own, hustle on over to Artcurial’s live eBay auction. Known as the foremost auction house in Paris, Artcurial now has hundreds of Hermes goodies on the auction block including today’s VPOD.

This clutch may be just a distant cousin to the famous Hermes Birkin bag, but it still carries utterly fabulous genes.

And it’s a coveted find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at eBay Live Auctions.

VPOD: H is for Hermes

There was a fascinating article on Hermes in the September 2007 issue of Vanity Fair. Did you know that Hermes “does not boast, does not use celebrities in advertising, does not license its name, (and) does not let imperfect work leave the atelier (imperfect work is destroyed)”?

What a company! And what amazing art (I won’t diminish their work by calling them mere products). Of course, if you’d like to own an infamous Kelly bag, you might find it hard to afford and spend years on a waiting list. If you’re in a hurry, you can purchase authentic pre-owned and vintage Hermes bags from Createurs de Luxe, but prices start at around $10,000 and head upwards to $55,000.

Of course, Hermes doesn’t just create handbags. Their scarves are treasures and, as you can see in today’s VPOD, they also make jewelry. This gold and leather bracelet is simple and refined with the exquisite craftsmanship of Hermes. And like anything Hermes, it’s made to last for generations and will never be out of style.

It’s a true treasure for a vintage fashionista.

Available at Resurrection Vintage.
