VPOD: Polka Dot Power for Storage Boxes and a Vintage 1960s Polka Dot Dress

vintage 1960s polka dot geometric print dress

chic recycled and decorated cardboard storage boxes

I’m not the biggest fan of polka dots in fashion. For me personally, I tend to find them a bit, well, polka-dotty! And the older you get the harder it becomes to pull off this whimsical print.

But don’tcha just love a challenge?

Me, too!

So with a wee bit of internet surfing, I discovered today’s VPOD. This lovely summer dress mixes dotted swiss with a bold geometric print for a combo that’s not too sweet, not too flashy, but just right.

Of course, there are other simple ways to add a few extra servings of polka dots into your fashion diet.

If you can’t bear the thought of wearing the print from from head-to-toe, try sporting a polka dot scarf for the day, grip a polka dot clutch or grab a fun piece of jewelry that will have’em seeing spots.

And don’t forget about your humble abode which might also benefit from the quick style boost a few polka dots can bring. One dotted pillow, lamp or throw may be all you need to bring a smile to your face.

Plus I love this idea for making the boring, ho-hum job of storing year-end documents a little more fun. Head down to your office supply store and pick up a packet of colorful round price stickers to brighten up those plain ol’ cardboard document boxes. Who says filing can’t be fun?!

This is the power of polka dots for Vintage Crusaders.

Dress available at Great Lake Outfitters.

LOVIN’ IT: Candlesticks as Bracelet Holders

candlestick with bangle bracelets

I spied this clever and decorative organizing idea in a 2005 issue of House & Garden magazine and I’m lovin’ the quirky combination of bracelets + candlestick.

It’s a fine way to display two of my favorite types of vintage objects at the same time and squeeze more style bang from my buck.

And that makes it an idea I just had to share with Vintage Crusaders!

Zuburbia HOME: Mirror Mirror On the Wall

the parlous salon - los angeles - hallway of mirrors

I visited my lovely hairstylist, Alyson Powell, at The Parlour Hair Salon recently and couldn’t resist sharing its hall of mirrors. What a fabulous low-cost decorating idea to pack a style punch!

Plus it’s a super-easy DIY project:

*  Just head over to your local thrift store and grab a bunch of used or vintage mirrors. If you can’t find enough mirrors, grab interesting frames in different shapes and sizes and have a glass shop cut mirrors to fit them. There’s no need to worry about condition issues like scratches or nicks.

* Paint all the frames in the same high gloss shade—white or black work especially well. (Remember to sand and prime properly for the type of frame material in order to achieve the best results.)

* Plan the layout for your wall by first laying out the frames on your floor and playing around until you’ve got the arrangement of the frames just right.

* Measure and mark the placement of each frame on the wall.

* Then hang each frame.

VOILA! You’ve created a chic hall of mirrors of your very own.

What a great weekend project for a Vintage Crusader!

Zuburbia HOME: Mary McDonald’s Office

mary mcdonald office

I spied this oh-so-pretty office pic in a 2006 issue of Domino Magazine. The lucky lady who works here? That would be the talented L.A. interior designer, Mary McDonald.

Her inspiration for the space? A 1950s Christian Dior dress salon.

One of her fab ideas to grab for your own? The framed pages of fashion photos ripped out of fashion books.

She called the photo arrangement “premeditated whimsy,” confessing it took her hours to find the right images and arrange them on the wall in just the right layout.

Of course, if you select used vintage frames from your local thrift or flea market, this could be an economical and eco-conscious project as well.

What beautiful inspiration for a vintage fashionista!
