VPOD: Vintage 1990s Lace-Up Suede Boots

I remember a teacher from junior high always reminding us that “Health is Wealth.” And the older I get the more I appreciate how true this is.

But while I exercise, eat right, wear sunscreen, meditate, and pretty much do everything I can to stay healthy, my one vice is high heels.

Oh, I’m aware of the dangers. A recent study from Iowa State University just confirmed with sensors, accelerometers, and force platforms that yes, indeed, high heels change the way we walk and alter our body posture in a way that puts strain on our ankles, knees, hips and lower backs. Make no mistake. Prolonged wearing of high heels can contribute to joint degeneration and knee osteoarthritis.

But interestingly, one part of the study focusing on impact and heel height showed that the peak impact came at two inches and that wearing higher heels actually had the same impact as wearing flats!

And that’s just the excuse I’d need to snag today’s VPOD.

These 1990s blue suede platform boots from Barney’s NY have sexy laces and an oh-so-perfect three-inch heel.

They’re a perfect find for a shoe-lovin’ vintage fashionista!

Available at Santoki Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage 1990s Todd Oldham Leopard Print Boots

amur leopard

According to ISEC, the International Society for Endangered Cats, the Amur Leopard is the most critically endangered wild cat whose numbers are known. Now take a guess how many of these beautiful creatures remain in the wild today. Go ahead, guess.

Not 5,000.

Not 500.

Not even 50!

In 2007, which are the last census figures stated, only somewhere between 25 and 34 of these spotted cats were still roaming their natural habitat in a small area south of the Far East-Primorskii region of Russia.

Does anyone else find it alarming and disturbing that while we women are clamoring for the faux leopard-prints that are so trendy for fall, a few dozen Amur leopards are literally hanging on for dear life, facing extinction of their species?

While I’m not suggesting that anyone should necessarily shun wearing a gorgeous leopard print like the one adorning today’s VPOD on a pair of 1990s Todd Oldham boots, I would like to suggest that when we don our leopard-print scarves and dresses and skirts this fall that we remember (and perhaps support) ongoing conservation efforts by organizations like ISEC to keep all endangered wild cats alive and well.

That’s how you become an eco-conscious vintage fashionista!

Available at Frockology.

VPOD: Vintage Boots to Re-Boot Your Closet

vintage 1970s suede and leather boots vintage 1960s lace-up boots vintage 1970s embroidered black suede boots

If you own a computer then you fully understand the concept of re-booting, the process that shuts down your machine and reloads the operating system. But re-booting isn’t just good for electronic gadgets. It’s good for your closet, too.

Just like a computer can reach limits on its RAM or end up with a cluttered cache, your closet can reach the confines of its walls and become a cluttered mess if you don’t take the time to re-set it occasionally. And what better time than now?

Once you’ve spent some time evaluating what you’ve got, eliminating (or storing) items that you won’t be using, re-assessing the gems that you’d forgotten about, and re-arranging things in a cohesive way, your creative fashion muscles will be firing at full speed—much the way your computer always works better after a re-boot.

And speaking of re-booting, you might want to reward yourself for your Closet Re-Boot by leaving room for one of today’s VPODs. Classic, Hip, or Boho—these vintage boots from the 1960s and 1970s can satisfy a variety of fashion looks with style.

They’re a quick and easy way to re-boot for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: The Hermes Scarf: History & Mystique

The Hermes Scarf: History and Mystique Book

Hermes has long been associated with luxury and fine craftsmanship. And that craftsmanship takes time. How much time? Well, this company can spend up to two years creating just one of its famous scarves!

Each new design requires months of development, hundreds of ideas, and dozens of designers. Just think–Hermes has to create a silkscreen printing frame for each individual color that you see in a scarf. So, for example, the scarf, Celebrations of the Sun-King, produced in 1994, required 1200 hours of labor just to produce its 35 individual silkscreen frames.

If you are a fanatic Hermes scarf collector or just someone who is fascinated with the beauty and story behind these pieces of art, you will want to reserve a copy of Nadine Coleno’s soon-to-be-published book, The Hermes Scarf: History & Mystique. The book is filled with 292 color photos and illustrations and is available for pre-order for anyone who’d like to save 37% off the list price you’ll see in stores in July.

It’s pure Hermes eye candy for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Amazon.com.
